i despise the gargoyles in the movie. god, don't they ruin this amazing film... just take them off, or at least make them more serious to fit with the mood.
despite that, i adore this song. so broadway... so cool, so fresh!
if they made the movie without this song, then they, after the credits, put this song in... that would have been awesome (because a lot of sweet things are after the credits in movies, right!?)
so yeah... hate gargoyles... love their only number.... i be trololo-ing disney
@BlackRose2354 This is Disney film though, they need to lighten the mood for the kids. If you want a serious version, you should watch one the originals, they're quite good.
@Filmzie But, it shouldn't be a very serious film. The book, yes, is serious. All other versions of this, serious. This is a children's film. Therefore, there is no need to be serious. Little kids need this comic relief in what is otherwise a very dark children's film.
Okay, as much as I've grown to . . . rather dislike the gargoyles (they were funny to me as a kid, of course, but now I feel they jarringly interrupt the otherwise-serious tone of the movie), am I the only one who thinks that Jason Alexander has a really nice singing voice? It kind of reminds me of Frank Sinatra, in a way.
And who else thinks that pairing "Adonis" and "croissant is" is the greatest rhyme in lyric history? XD Stephen Schwartz, you're a genius.
@4everinthetwilight Considering Disney, I suppose anything's possible, but the actual Quasimodo in the novel /did/ speak to gargoyles in the cathedral. Because they were non-judgmental of him, and because they also were unusual shapes and also bound to the cathedral, he felt a kindship to them.
Am I the only one who thinks Quasi either has a mental disorder or a ridiculous vivid imagination? He's the only one who interacts with the gargoyles. I think they only exist in his mind, like in Calvin and Hobbes. X)
@PsychoticGeek23 well, that makes sense. being cooped up in a tower all his life has gotta drive him nuts at some point...imagine the teenage years...
@randomerkitty I'm actually writing a fanfic about his childhood and how, in his loneliness and boredom, he found three gargoyles that weren't fixed down, so he moved them to where he could play with them, and essentially treated them as his imaginary friends with Victor and Hugo as his brothers and Laverne as his mother figure. And then, one day, they start speaking back to him. :O
Am I the only one who finds this really out of place in the movie? Phebas has almost been killed on Frollo's orders, Esmerelda is on the run, Frollo has ordered the city to be burnt in his hunt for her, and then this song comes up. I understand that it makes Esmerelda choosing Phebas over Quasimodo more heartbreaking, but IMHO it seems too happy and upbeat for this particular point in the movie.
@TheUnseenMovieLover You make a good point, but, for all it's maturity and quality, the Hunchback of Notre Dame WAS ultimately a kid's movie. For the drama, it would make sense to keep that tension throughout and let it build up, but as far as a children's movie, this comedic relief is pure gold and perfectly timed, and therefore, IMO, uniquely Disney. Besides, with the next few scenes, (Phoebus' arrival, Frollo's "visit," etc.) it's probably for the best that the tension was temporarily broken.
@mustangdreamer55 there's already a German stage version with a book by James Lapine and score by Menken/Schwartz. Menken is currently reworking it for American audiences. :)
Jeez, listen to that note Jason Alexander hits around 2:26. Holy crap, I know he's been on Broadway before, but he hit that note super epically, haha!
@EYDstudios I think, since obviously the gargoyles are from Quasi's own imagination and aren't really alive, it's Quasi himself giving himself a pep-talk about Esmeralda. In that sense, it fit in perfectly, and right before his heart is again broken.
@AngelWitch08 Actually, it's a family movie (most of this film's plot will go right over the head of a child) and the comic relief doesn't have to contrast the rest of the film as much as this does.
@LeonSKennedy828 i must disagree. this song is one of the only ones that captures the metaphorical significance of Notre Dame to Quasimodo. In an existence estranged by everyone except Frollo, Quasimodo is shown here to have a friend in the cathedral itself. It alone understands him, and personified in the admittedly excessively cheery gargoyles, Notre Dame is Quasimodo's only true companion. I thought Disney did an excellent job of conveying this without being too heavy in this song.

@luckichrm003 Family film is a better word for it, children's film implies that it is designed for only children.

Were the gargoyles only alive in his mind since he had no friends and made them up or were they actually real? I've always wondered this.
