We saw this in high school Economics class. I thought it would be a drag, but it's my 2nd favorite class! This video in particularly struck me as a brilliant example of the success of the Free Market. This is how capitalism is supposed to work!

Islam does not discourage women from having money or being financially independant. That is part of Bangladeshi CULTURE not Islam. I was suprised Mr. Yunus was not aware of these (being that he is an "educated" Muslim). However it is a good program.

"the system IS DESIGNED to WORK" is a great quote from the video and expresses the affirmation of this line of thinking. People communicating and "working with eachother" and the 16 lessons they discover is the key I learned from reading about this stuff. It's designed so that almost everyone (99%) can pay back the loan and not be alone in the bondage of a lifelong lonely loan where the profit is stripped far away from the poverty it should be trying to cure.

There is a very good TedTalk on poverty and mostly it is poorly understood as a concept. Daily incomes are not proof of poverty but it is clear that education is the best prophylactic. MIT university are probably doing the most to empower individuals.

A lot of women in the west are pawns of the dual system of exploitation: patriarchy and capitalism. women are advertised, battered by their husbands, left to the misery of drugs and left to fend for themselves. Grameen is a concept grown out of the most impoverished world but can be adapted to treat the ills of the modern world. Grameen helps bring back the dignity, honour and respect for each other through communal strength not individual materialism.
