Phillips is a real gem. He always gives more than one is expecting even if one knows that he´s great. Spinosi is spectacular...Both together are marvellous.

They are SO together! Haha. And Jaroussky continues to supercede my expectations, time and again. Vivaldi really is so amazing in his and Spinosi's hands.

As to the hand comments if you look at his performance vids it is a different type of movement than here. I wonder if he is using active visualization techniques... we do it at my school a lot in Maryland... it helps focus on the details of the music...pulling the sound and legato line, drive the sound to the next phrase,etc. Notice how he does it mainly on long sustained and legato lines and the motion is almost as it stretching the phrase...active interpretation!

I noticed a lot of arms/hands movements with French singers. As far as I know, it's rather frowned upon in the US (at least among the voice students).

Anyway, I heard him last night in theatre in NYC (in Sant'Alessio), and his voice excelled my expectations. He sounded clear and well-focused, plenty of volume in that medium sized theatre. I'd love to see him in some full-blown higher Handel role, like Serse or Rinaldo or even Ariodante.

A question, do you know WHY hands and arms movements are discouraged in US singers? I've noticed a certain "woodenness" in some recital singers, David Daniels,etc.Philippe's hands are beautifully eloquent and help with the interpretation!
