This is sung at the end of Vespers for the Elevation of the Holy Cross. The celebrant goes to the center of the church and takes the cross. Facing each of the 4 directions in turn, he makes an exclamation and raises the cross high over his head, slowly lowers it all the way to the ground, and then raises it up high again as the choir sings "Lord have mercy" 100 times. This arrangement is for one set of 100, and it is sung 4 times.

It's done at cathedrals; in parishes only by special blessing.

As an organist for an "High" Anglican (Church of England) Church, I have a "love affair"with Orthodox musick, and am subtly introducing it into our lliturgy. Oh... sorry for my mistake, and thank you for the clarification. Anyway, orthodox music is beautiful, no matter if Russian or Serbian or Slavonic, or any other Slavic people's music, I mean all Slavic people's orthodox chants, are beautiful.

I think that the beauty of these chants (sound) connects to Spirituality, and, ultimately, lifts our spirits to God.

Is it true that they pronounce the "G" in Gospodi like an "H"? it kind of sounds that way in the video. I'm studying Russian right now and was wondering how that was pronounced.

I asked the same question to my Russian friends. They said, and I am still not sure of the difference, that it can be pronounced either way. If it's a question of dialect, I don't know. I have heard other recordings of small monastic choirs, where it is definitely a harder "G" sound.

No. It is pronounced "G" in Russian and Church Slavonic.

No, "g" is pronounced as in "good". However, in certain dialects they mix g and h together which might sound like something in between. I believe that's the case in old Russian and Ukranian (i think). And Russian scripture follows the old Russian more than the modern one.
