I remember this performance on star search as well, and I taped it because I always wanted to have it. This performance was exceptional. I found out later that she was in Miss America, and I'd like to know how the hell she didnt' win, with a voice like that, and she has the beauty as well. Well at least one organization, star search, recognized her amazing talents and got it right.

'Nita is amazing. I remember watching her compete on Star Search and I fell in love with her. She is a beautiful woman inside & out. She often joked with Ed on stage and this really showed her inner personality & spirit.I was thrilled when she took home that $100K in the Star Search Finals.She was also a former Miss Louisiana America and competed @ the Miss America Pageant.

the funny things is i watched star search that season and i did not like this girl. all i kept saying was that this girl wanted to be the next whitney houston so bad. big hair and sequined gowns errrrr week. then low and behold...the bodyguard comes out and who is playing whitneys character at the oscars...this tired child. I laughed till i almost peed.

I remember seeing this on TV 20 yrs ago, glad to find this on youtube, however I believe the title of the song is Apiece of sky from the streisand musical Yentl, written by Michel Legrand. The confusion is understandable since both Papa can you hear me & Piece of sky are part of the same musical and shares many similar melodic segments.

Thanks for posting this. I actually remember watching this peformance and I just got to see here scene in the Bodyguard which made me go youtubing for her. She was hands down awesome.

She can really sing! She's got this bell like voice! Have you ever heard of her version of Whitney Houston "I have nothing". Her high notes are stunning! Her version of I Have Nothing is featured in the film, The Bodyguard, in Oscar performance. I hope someone will put this song on here someday! Thank you so much.
