  • Two things: The lighting on the Hold Your Fire tour was everybit as good as many shows 20 years later. Howard knew what the Hell he was doing. And, I am sorry, Neil's Ludwigs sound 100% better than the DW's. They just do.

  • I have the "A Show of Hands" CD and DVD (and have since lost the original VHS) and this song is nowhere! I wish the sets would actually match up. This is the era I grew up on. 'Hold Your Fire' is bad ass! (But then again, what Rush album isn't bad ass?) These guys are truly phenomenal!

  • What is the movie shown at the beginning of this video??

  • I don't care what people say; Hold Your Fire is f-ing awesome.

  • What is the video at the start from?

  • Name one performer from this generation that even remotely has enough talent to sing, play keyboard and bass, on the same song, live, none the less.

  • The keyboard intro is so ominous and dark. It sends chills up my spine every time. The mark of excelent musicians.

  • very generated here. looks like a 35th generation copy. like we are seeing it underwater... Dont know why they didnt just keep on both video and laserdisc..

  • OMG they have better play this on the Clockwork Angels tour! Along with The Big Wheel, The Analog Kid, Where's My thing?, Heresy, Animate, Double Agent, and Prime Mover.

  • @falkenlaser i agree with you 100% also it'll be 2012 and they should play 2112 or do something major with that!

  • @RushRules4 I'm seeing them at The Gorge Ampitheater on July 2nd; the last show of the Time Machine Tour :) :) :)

  • @falkenlaser Saw them last night. They broght back some more old songs they havent played in a while. It was a phenominal show.

  • @powerageman Yeah I know they're playing Time Stand Still!

  • @RushRules4 I think they should someday open with 2112. Hearing that synth in the beginning, and like say they projected the "star" on the big screen using lasers, would be awesome!

  • @falkenlaser Did you miss the All the World's a Stage tour? They did exactly that. Course, that was what, '77? maybe '78? It was every bit as amazing as you imagine, even without the lasers. My first of many, many nights in the captivated audience.

  • Hold your fire is what got me into Rush!

  • The Hold your Fire album is the one that you usually hear that almost no one really likes! And this One and the Power Windows were the albums that made me be amazed by Rush! I didn't know that at that time they already had an extensive and a successful career. So, I spent almost 2 years listening just Power Winodws and Hold your Fire and nothing more! Until Presto came out! Now, since 1987 I'm a huge fan, but these two albums were the ones responsable of my adoration for RUSH!

  • The first RUSH album i heard was Power Windows, I was in jr. high. My friends at the time were listening Guns and Roses and all those bands from the late 80's.So, to me, RUSH was Power Windows, that was the only thing I knew of them! And i didn't listen anything else, just that album everyday! So, one day, i went to de record store to see if i could find more material about this band, and they had the Hold your Fire album. I bought it, and I couldn't stop playing it! I was amazed!

  • Higher quality audio on my page.

  • Pretty awesome.

  • OMG, this is BAT FUCK INSANE! As if this song's studio recording wasn't already amazing! That beginning line "I DON'T WANT TO FACE THE KILLER INSTINCT, FACE IT OR YOU OR ME!!!" was done beyond perfect. Too bad they didn't ever put this on a CD....

Let's just all hope they do this on the Clockwork Angels tour next year, along with The Big Wheel!

  • I love 80s rush far more then any other decade, I love the 80s riffs and styles I have a tough time comparing whose better guitarist, Alex Lifeson or Ritchie Blackmore. I mean Alex had set solos, and didnt improvise so that shows he is a lil bit better

  • where can i get this?

  • @n2112bytor2112p The only way to get it is to buy the find a copy of the laser disc of a show of hands. The laser disc was an early attempt at a dvd that was the size of a record. Also of course you would need the player

  • @Digikid313 ok i will immediately go out and purchase a laser disc of a show of hands plus a laser disc player!

  • does anyone know what movie the clip is from?

  • @ieetemos4breakfast it is from the A show of hands movie but it was only included on the lazerdisc edition of it.

  • @Digikid313 no i knew that i meant the movie clip that precedes the song...the old black and white prison scene.

  • @ieetemos4breakfast Sorry, the film clip is from the 1932 movie the last mile. It is about a supposedly innocent man sent to Death Row just before an inmate riot. He gets involved in the riot even as his friends on the outside try to prove his innocence.

  • They need to play this on their next tour!!!

  • Breathtaking. They should take this one out of the vault next tour along with grand designs.

  • @Digikid313 Dude, you read my mind.

  • Jaw...on the floor.

  • es una real MARICONADA que este tema no este incluido en el dvd o cd de A SHOW OF HAND TOUR. solamente esta en LASERDISC.

  • That was awesome! They should have kept this on the DVD, it would have made one hell of an easter egg for sure... Holy crap, that was fantastic.

  • why was this left off the DVD release?

  • The drumming at the end is absolutely incredible. Neil Peart will always be one of my biggest influences.

And no matter how many times I listen to Rush, I still get chills.

  • great call on the drums near the end... i feel the same. Neil's the deal.

  • @intermission2 I just love Rush fans! I search for a song like Lock and Key, which I consider to be one of the more unknown Rush songs, and I just get so excited about the music and it makes me very happy reading all these comments. I love you guys haha

  • @KingXanadu greatest band in the universe

  • That's odd...Geddy plays a 5-string Wal in the studio for this song. Wonder why he didn't on the tour. Still kicks ass!

  • he did? i never knew he played a 5 string, ive only seen him with a four string

  • yeah...that's why I'm saying...why didn't he play it on tour/live. Would Be cool to see him all over the 5 ya know?!

  • TRUE FACT: Geddy used a 5-string Wal bass in the studio, but to keep the weight down on his bass during touring, he used a 4-string tuned down to 'D' specifically for this song...

  • I thought he only used the 5 string Wal for playing "High Water" in the studio?

  • i think he just tuned it to dropped D for the tour. wouldda been cool to see him playing on a 5-string.

  • fantastic vocals as usual!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is one of the 20 best rush songs. why the fuck wasnt this on the dvd?

  • it wasnt on the cd either

  • Why the fuck wasnt this on the DVD?

  • one of my fave songs from one of my fave albums.over here in the uk ive been to every rush tour since `77.for the r30 and snakes and arrows tours i went to every show.cost me a bloody fortune.

  • Lock and key doesn`t come in the original show of hands dvd! Does anyone know if this is a special feature, an eastern egg, or something hidden in show of hands???

  • No. It was only found on the Laserdisc version in 1989. The rerelease of A Show of Hands on DVD and the original VHS versions did not include Lock and Key

  • Thanx for the info!

Hope they add it in the future!

    have a great day!

  • Think it was on the laserdisc version only

  • i wonder how neil puts them stickers on his drums then change them year after year that would be a waste of time

  • It's not stickers. Neil tends to get a new kit for every tour.

  • OMG!Geddy with a casio keyboard...80's Tosh...

  • "Subdivisions"....Nothing more be said...I had the privilege of seeing Rush Live 1985 & 1986 in Charlotte, NC! The best concert I've ever seen in my life! And I've seen some of the best, during the early 80's up till 90's! (Queen / Pink Floyd / Van Halen / Z Z Top / Eddie Money/ REM / Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers etc. I could go on, but I saw them all, in their "Heyday!" What a life I've had! But, to get back on track, Neal Peart is the BEST drummer of them all! Period!

  • I was at those 2 shows as well! Power Windows in 85 and Hold Your Fire in 86.....seen em 7 times since: Roll The Bones, Counterparts, Vapor Trails, R30, S&A (3x)

  • "Put er there then, my brother!" Good days & awesome times! I sure do miss those good old days! ASU Rules!

  • I went to ASU as well...road tripped from Boone for the Power Windows show....the HYF show was during the Thanksgiving holiday...do I know you by chance?

  • We "tripped" from Cone dorm (ASU) to Charlotte in '85/'86 for the Power Windows tour. When I say "tripped" yep, it was all that! Probably the last time I did much more of anything, before I went into the ARMY! I ended up graduating ASU in late 1992, after my military service. What's your name?

  • By the way, I bought the '" A Show of Hands " VHS back in 1989 and this song was not included, not even in the REPLAY X3 disc from 2006, so, was it just included on the laserdisc back in those days ? bacause, how I wish I had it then when I bought the videocassette 20 years ago !

  • That's why admire Rush, and that's why I've benn a loyal fan for the last 30 years, besides its musicianship, been three virtuosos, and always having the capabilty of reinventing themselves and be original at the same time is quite amazing, I love listenning to each and every album they've made, depending on the mood you're in or the good memories it can bring back you can choose material from the 70's, 80's, 90's, and incredibly 00's , and all of them are different, long live this great band !

  • The work Geddy Lee did in the 80's is by far his best, from Permanent Waves (1980) to Presto (1989), specially on Power Windows (1985, referring to his basslines). Even though fans consider this decade Rush's worst, I find it quite amazing and really underrated.

  • I couldn't agree more!! I'll take albums like Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows & Signals over Fly By Night, Caress of Steel, Self titled any day.

  • Quote: "The work Geddy Lee did in the 80's is by far his best, from Permanent Waves (1980) to Presto (1989), specially on Power Windows .... Even though fans consider this decade Rush's worst, I find it quite amazing and really underrated."

I agree the 80s were their best. Most Rush fans back then, myself included, thought GRACE UNDER PRESSURE was comparatively weak & the wrong direction to take, but the rest of the 80s material was stellar.

This decade has been their 'worst' by far IMHO.

  • True, Grace Under Pressure might be their worst album in my opinion, with just Distant Early Warning, Red Sector A, and Between the Wheels as some exceptions. 90's were their worst, again, in my opinion. Vapor Trails and Snakes and Arrows were better than their 90's work though.

  • Ooops, I forgot about VAPOR TRAILS, so I guess that changes the equation for me a bit. In the 90s, neither COUNTERPARTS nor TEST FOR ECHO wowed me much, and I really lost interest for awhile. But yeah, VP and S&A were back on the right track.

I too liked "Red Sector A" and "Between the Wheels" from G/P. I'd throw in "Kid Gloves" as well. The rest was weak IMHO. Too much synth textures & not enough Alex. And those haircuts -- WTH?

    *laugh*

  • True, that album lacks of Lerxst doin' it

  • Yeah, A Lerxst in Wonderland was rather subdued on that record.

I don't begrudge them for experimenting and trying something different, but it was a real momentum breaker after the MP and SIGNALS albums & tours. They had been on fire, creatively and success-wise, and P/G was kind of a letdown at the time. But then they came roaring back with POWER WINDOWS and order was restored to the universe. *laugh*

Just noticed the typo in my earlier post: "G/P" should have been reversed. My bad.

  • @adrian5b I couldn't agree more adrian! :-) Even tho I love all periods of Rush the 80's is what I consider MY period being those were my teen years. I go through diff moods and periods listening wise and find I really do have a certain affinity for albums like Grace Under Pressure, Hold Your Fire and Power Windows. It was really cool to witness them go through all that developement and be constantly blown away from what they would come out with next! :-) Rush Rules!

  • @adrian5b i THINK IT WAS THEIR BEST STUFF! (THE 80'S)

  • @adrian5b I couldn't agree with you more.

  • @adrian5b i never considered anything their worst

  • @adrian5b Even if the 80s were their worst decade, Rush's worst is lightyears beyond anyone else's best, so there's hardly a problem in people thinking the 80s weren't great

  • I always thought this song was better then mission I mean mission is good but a little on the boring side this song rocks. Hold Your Fire is classic.

  • If anyone EVER contests Pearts standing as greatest drummer alive they need just listen to the last minute of this song. Mind blowing :-)

  • I wanna see them live so bad, I missed Mexico concert and now that I'm in Canada living they look like they are not touring again :(

  • They will tour again. Have faith ;-)

    Rush are music gods!

  • romaneberle never say that again that Hold Your Fire is not cheesy its some of their best work, lyrics and your not a true rush fan if you make comments like that so go listen to linkin park

  • wtf was with the beginning?? lol

  • Damn this is a good song!

  • Great song! I love the intro. Very powerfull

  • It's a real shame this wasn't included on the DVD. It's my fav tracks from Hold Your Fire and this version is cracking!

  • Don't want to silence a desparate voice for the sake of security. No one wants to make a terrible choice on the price of being free. Too bad this song wasn't on Replay. Thanks for posting!

  • some of the lyrics from GUP, PW, and HYF are true poetry!!!

  • This is a really interesting song, musically and lyrically.

  • I was at an outdoor van halen concert (molson amp) and I almost feel asleep on the lawn, thats good! It means that the sound was perfect!!! exciting and relaxing at the same time

  • yet, that's almost exactly what they did, if you look at the list, there was like 1 more HYF song for 1 less GUP, only a few differences

  • They should have included this in the DVD version. =(

  • Hold Your Fire isn't the most popular Rush album. I say: why not? It's spectacularly complex and extremely intelligent. It's the sign of the times, I guess. People can't appreciate great music like this nowadays.

  • Hold Your Fire, lyrically, is some of Rush's best work or Peart's best writing.

  • i agree, hold your fire is along with power windows, the best musical and lyrical work. i guess they just lack the power that is needed to gather today's listeners.

  • that's because those albums (and I add "Grace under pressure" as well) were so sophisticated, not so easy to listen to, with lots of keyboards and synths, which rock-n-roll guys really hate, so these records are seen more like something experimental and nothing more, while instead they contain some of their greatest songs ever. I was listening to the "Grace under pressure tour" lately and I must admit it's a stunning compilation of songs from their 80s records! So mature....I love them!

  • @MasterODisaster101:

IMHO, 'Hold Your Fire' is really cheesy. Some good songs, but I have to skip 'Prime Mover' about everytime I hear it.... ;-) 'Tai Shan' (?) is another candidate... ;-)

    Anyway, great lyrics, great music.

But still my favourite Rush album remain 'Presto' and 'Caress Of Steel'.

  • from the first listen many many years ago, the lyrics for this song (and many other Neil lyrics) from this period in his writing have become eerily true - more so now than when they were written. This is a band that lyrically and musically (and in every other way) have stood and are standing the erosive power of time. They continue to mature, grow, and become more relevant with each passing day. Their ability to remain true to themselves is unmatched in almost any artistic world.

  • I agree with Geddy Lee, I don't want to face the killer instinct, like I did briefly one or two years ago. I keep it under Lock and Key now. This song was playing on the radio and it stopped me in my tracks, I thank Rush for doing a song that helped me. They helped me a lot of times, even with Mystic Rhythms, haha, kinda weird huh?

  • Geddy's first line is epic

  • is that slowing down in tempo a techincal error or did they just do it differently live?

I kinda like it either way

  • fuckn screw suck taxpayers ass

  • I agree HYF is one of their best It;s weird from me to think of this as classic Rush 20 years later- when in the 80's this was"new" Rush. Prime Mover is my Favorite-

Power windows holds up well too- see Grand designs

  • quailty of video not the same what happened

    :(

  • As Lee said once, "Hold Your Fire" was an arrival point. "We climbed a mountain. Now we need to see a direction to follow". They took the right direction. But I'm glad Rush themselves recognized the fact "Hold Your Fire" was the reference point. A masterpiece without any doubt. If someone thinks "Hold Your Fire" can't be figured as one of the bests Rush albums, I have just one comment to state: "I'm sorry, but you are just wrong. Period".

  • MAGIC.

  • whos better?? r.e.m. or the great rush.. i say rush although sucky bands like blues travler and rem and dave matthews band had more commcrecil success. who cares. rush rocks and alex would wipe up

  • What a Song ! Just Masterfull!

  • Hold your fire is such an underrated album. I love the sheer depth complexity of the music and lyrics.

  • I completely agree. I am a huge Rush fan and i will be to the day I die. most people i talk to about rush dont like anything after Moving Pictures or Signals. Hold Your Fire has some of the best lyrics Ive ever heard. Open Secrets, Lock and Key, Second Nature, Mission...theyre all such great songs. I dont know how other rush fans cant see it. Hold your fire is my third favorite Album after Moving Pictures and Hemispheres.

  • It came out in my senior year and I'll never forget it as it is up there with my faves! Lock and Key studio and this live version just blow me away every time! Especially when they get to the middle jam! Although it sounds diff its got a lot in common with Tom Sawyer ... the keyboard riff turning into guitar riff turning into solo thing! :-) Aint it cool!? :-))

  • I think my favorite part of this song has to be the melody on piano. its absolutely full of passion and emotion. This song without piano is like Reeses without Peanut Butter.

  • Rush is magic! :)

    Beautiful music.

    And what words...

Geddy, Alex, Neil - They are great. You know it if you watch this. ;)

    Greetings.

  • 1:03 is probably the most awesome note Geddy has ever hit.

  • check out the END of their song "available light"

  • Love this song the most!

  • Christ is alive and well....and he is the drummer known as "The Professor"!!!!

  • Very nice! Why wasn't this on the DVD? I'm telling ya -- they should release all this stuff on future copies of this DVD. I know I'd buy it!

  • Seriously, why do they cut out anything. Rush is always top quality, even on a bad day. They cut out a lot on R30 too. They went on record regretting it later. They're just too good to cute anything out. Snakes & Arrows live will feature the 3 hr show in Amsterdam 2007. Comes out in April!

  • 80s was my favourite Rush area, but what blows my mind away how they still can do it! Snakes and Arrows is just brilliant and they sound best than ever. Great band, awesome musicians, Masters Of Sounds!!

  • To the guy who asked about the intro movie, the movie is called The Last Mile

  • oh my god, i've been looking for this vid forever! why wasn't it on replay x3?

  • no idea, but i love this song

  • me too!! ahhh!!!!

  • Rush is a musical group that has evolved and mastered its musical sound, hence their longevity. You can't say that about most musical groups. They rule.

  • Does anyone know if a snakes and arrows concert was filmed for the public? and if yes, where did they or where will they?

  • i don't think anything official has been announced, but they definately should! Geddy's voice sounded better than what it has for years, and they put on such a great show.

  • I heard that the shows on the 16th and 17th of october were going to be filmed for a dvd...if they do i hope to hell they dont leave any tracks out like they did with R30.

  • Just need to know the name of the movie which is shown at the beginning of the video

  • Wow, people are so closed-minded when it comes to the mid-to-late 80s albums. I personally love them (Hold Your Fire especially), and this song is one of my all-time Rush favourites. Open your minds, folks - it may be different, but it's still amazing music.

  • how could three guys make such good and powerfull music without being gods? neil peart is the best drummer of all time, geddy lee is the best bassist of all time and alex lifeson is not quite the best but he is still greatly awsome at guitar!

  • Geddy lee is the best, keyboardist, sing, guitarist, he can do it all

  • Neil Peart writes the best lyrics in the whole history of Rock & Roll.

  • ...below the waterline...

    mr. limpit?

  • This is really cool seeing something I didn't know existed. People fail to realize how offensive this album was to real Rush fans! It turned them from nation treasures to an embarrassment.

  • why was it embarassing

  • This album was the Rush's last chance in remaining a relevant rock group and they blew it! Rush's core audience just couldn't believe how awful they had become. Why was it an embarassment? Have you ever listened to that abomination?

  • what are you talking about rush is rush no matter what kind of music they make no rush is bad!

  • Rush fans, including me love the album. I think Hold Your Fire was when the people that didn't like the band completely lost interest.

  • someone knows what is the title of the movie in the begin of the song?

  • It is just so hard to get the studio sound while playing live, especially this song. Hold your fire was just an amazing album just like power windows!!!!!!! That's the altimate of rock and high-tech keyboard "events" wizardry!

  • Hello all - I totally agree with eastcobb's comment. I would urge everyone to listen to the words on Signals, Grace Under Pressure, and Hold Your Fire. Especially the songs "Subdivisions", "The Enemy Within", "The Weapon", and "Lock and Key."

  • In this day and time, the words of this song are even more poignant. Too bad the video quality is so bad. Neil is one red blur the whole song.

  • This was on the Laser Disc version of SOH, never did get to see it. There's also a version of Force Ten that was released only in Japan on Different Stages cd that absolutely rocks, audio only though.

  • You'd think someone in the upper echelon of the Rush crew would have known about this song so that they could have put it on Replay X3. :(

  • Rumour has it that they're saving it for the individual releases, that's why it's not on Replay X3

  • I love this song.

  • I don't like it

  • I still don't understand why they didn't include this song in "Replay".

  • This track was not included in the DVD release because the producer of the Replay set apparently was not aware that it existed prior to remastering. Therefore, it was left off.

  • "I don't wanna face the killer instinct

Face it in you or me" ... AMEN

  • Silliest nothin .. Lock And Key is brilliant lyrically and musically ... I agree with every word of Lock and Key ...If more people lived by the words of Lock and Key the world wouldnt be so f@cked up .. RUSH RULES

  • this, and time stand still should have been on show of hands..

  • why isn't this song on any of the versions i have seen??

  • Im a big Rush fan. So all you Rushians dont get all freaked when I say ... "These were some of Pearts silliest lyrics"

  • Alex is wearing a different jacket than the two nights that they filmed the video.... I wonder were they put this in on the VHS setlist? Wouldn't it look funny anywhere bt the end? Cool vid!

  • From what I read, the reason why they didn't add "Lock and Key" to the DVD version of "Lock and Key" was because they forgot it existed lol.

  • God, so cool. =D

  • Thanks so much for sharing!! Like ytserob said, I don't get why they didnt include it in "a show of hands" DVD, among other things!!!

  • zOMFG I have been waiting since forever to see this live version! I have it both on vhs and dvd, and never found it for download... thanx dude! I mean, serioulsy, THANKS SO MUCH!!!

  • i forgot this tune was on 'show of hands.' thanks for putting it up!

  • So cool! Them was the days!

  • Still don't get why this couldn't be added to 'Replay'. Thanks for sharing!

  • Oh.... man that was awesome!
