  • Would be great to see your strumming hand too, sounds like your raking too, brigh

  • this is probably the most useless question ever, but some guitarists barre the top two strings when playing chords like this and some barre the top three so that you can just remove the middle finger to switch from major to minor. what is this guy doing? or what did hendrix even do?

  • I love your playing style!! what are the 2 chords you play following the dm7b5 around 2:40? dying to know!! keep rockin'!

  • I coulda sworn that you took your third finger and used it to hold down to the a string too.

  • Thanks Man..

  • @runrabbitrun4342

nothing but close your eyes and play with your heart... and play, play, play...

  • @jimicolors Yer, but how do you use the thumb, as l cant. Must be because my thumb isnt very long. Also, have you used the Digitech Hendrix pedal yet. Would love for you guys to come down under for some gigs

  • @jimicolors wow your playing is incredible and just 30 minutes ago i was thinking to myself that playing with my eyes closed might be the best way to practice

  • You were supposed to show the chord :) You just can't stop jamming, can You :) I sometimes get something like this too, but I never would have thought one can use that chord in this way. Nice riff, gotta try it. Cheers!

  • Wow, way to take it in all in and make it your own...good on you!

  • you know why hendrix keep his thumb on top? to play bass line and lead at once....this inspired me alot! thank you and keep it up!

  • This dude just busted off a groove wow... Loved it.

  • I bet Jimi would be so humbled to see so many vids on youtube dedicated to his style...such a pioneer...sadly missed, all props to you my friend for keeping the vibe alive...James Marshall Hendrix RIP

  • wish you'd show EXACTLY what the basic g chord was...I'm trying to see where your fingers are at the start....just a little tab or even a basic explanation would help a lot.

  • how...do i play like this....?

  • Enrique, you have done it! You have finally got Jimi and Stevie Ray to jam! They are playing through you, knowing you have the skills! All kidding aside, you are one HELL of a guitarist! I love all of your videos, and it's great to see you and the guys in your band having a great time playing music. I wish all musicians would have the same mindset as you, not only would music be better, but the world would be a better place. Peace be with you always!

  • Double jointed thumb - bollocks. By the way this guy has finger clubbing - a sign of heart/ lung disease. Compare with Keff.

  • @tommyrotter -Get over it, man! Who gives a goddamn what his fingers look like, or what illness may afflict him? Beautiful music is coming from those hands! Shoot off your mouth to Tony Iommi with those lame remarks, he'll wipe the floor with you, look at what he has accomplished with the middle and ring fingertips of his right hand missing! I'm not out to rake you over the coals, but for Christ's sake, give the man a break!

  • With that position,we can play better than the regular position

  • if you small hands you can still do it, it takes a while though

i suggest learning castles made of sand the chorus has this g chord in it

  • thank you i learned so much from this video

  • Fantastic. The guitar flipped gives it an entirely different sound. But you've got monster hands brah - like Jimi!!!

  • @clarkewi The guitar is not really flipped, just mirrored. He's got the thin E on the bottom, like a regular righthanded guitar. Albert King f.i. played with his strings 'upside down'.

  • fantastiq!!!!

  • Damn, I didnt even realised I was using his chord. I just randomly found it while experimenting lol

  • nice rythm dude

  • you sound more like SRV !!!

  • i wish i could play it like that but i have these damn small hands!

  • @firebird116 Don't damn 'em; do your thang!

  • its because hes tuned a half step down

  • No, iots because he excludes the 5th

  • Thank You Enrique for sharing this!

    GREAT!!

  • HUGE HANDS !

  • Oh yeah,love it.thankyou

  • very good

jimi would play a lot of inversions that is true.

    Great job again.

  • Hendrix G major chord? Come on man you've gone off on an ego trip here.

  • nope he invented his own chord usd in some of his songs

  • And one more thing: Jimi Hendrix had a double-jointed thumb which enabled him to (easier) play chords the 'incorrect' way.

    Electrix

  • btw electrixladyland69 i have a double jointed thumb too but i can only move the bottom part of my thumb

  • im so happy my thumb is double jointed i didnt think it was that hard when i learned to play like this... i guess it is i just got lucky i guess....much love

  • Isn't everybody's?

  • @electrixladyland69 Double jointed thumb LOL what kind of BS is that .I love how all these Hendrix "insights" come out of kids mouths. Please provide verifiable proof and I will sing your praises for life.

  • @electrixladyland69 bullshit.

  • I noticed that too on my own. Playing barre chords the 'correct' way versus playing it the 'wrong' way like Hendrix did give you a brighter compared to JH's muted 'incorrect' version of same chord.

    Electrix

  • I think he IS jimi hendrix...

  • Wow, with the new neck on my guitar I can come closer to this style. I wish I could get to your country so I could pay to have you as my teacher.

    Dm

  • Please don't stop playing! Please......

  • I've heard that jimi barred the D AND the A with the third finger, sorta like a seventh shape but laying that finger across both strings. It's tricky but it makes the chord, to me, sound a bit closer. Anyone else tried this?

  • Yeah, it can be used to fill the sound out a little, but it makes embellishments slightly more difficult and is hard to do with thick strings.

  • Great playing mate stellar stuff .

  • thumb chords > bar chords

    nice vid

  • wow how long have u been playin

  • How long? It doesn't matters! Dude is a freak!

  • Thank you

    40 years.... but not everyday....

  • amazing!!!

  • man those are big fingers - just like jimis

    and very nice jam :)

  • YOU GROOVE MAN!!!!FANTASTIC!

  • testostrone, man. thats why his hands are big, man

  • jimicolors=best guitarist on youtube. Even his hands look like Jimi's.

  • lol on the hands. I was just thinking that.

  • if this is hendrix's version of the e major shape then how does he play other open chords? i know how he plays his a shapes, but is there something for the d, c, and g shapes?

  • cheers thanks

  • tupe "kango od kocani"in the search bar and see who is thinking he is jimi hendrix...haha

  • Ive got small hands this style kills em...no pain no gain!!!!Thanx Jimicolors you taught me alot man.....PEACE!!!!

  • jea

  • really nice rhythm guitar study--and the rhythm playing is (to me) what really puts Hendrix so far out in his own class

  • Playing, it sometimes gravitates to the key of G which is a fun key to play with.

  • uh, well, YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!

  • helped me a lot....thanks...

  • amazing

  • he wrote it ;)

  • i like black men when there nice and drippy and wet....

  • lmao!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • so immature

  • This was wrote by NikkiMackenzie3 whilst he was at my house. Apologies for any offence caused, but I did not write this.

  • :O:O:O:O u wrote it when u were drunk...

  • damn! nice one sir.. youre amazing

  • Cool. I actually use my ring finger to hold down both the A and D string together or the way he shows. It was wearing my thumb out to hold bar chords using my index finger as the bar.

  • yeah i do it more like john frusciante where i use my pinky on the A sting and then just use it like this guy is for all those little accent notes and stuff

it provides so much more options to your playing its redicoulus haha you really hear this playin in stuff like little wing and bold as love

  • yea i do the hendrix style chords all the time. its so much easier to go back and forth from lead to chords that way. well it is if you play with the thumb over the top for lead like i do.

  • great vid man, all of your videos are amazing and help to recreate that perfect jimi sensation

  • I played it twice and u know what it sounds better the second time Got an idea, play it three times see if it's better ok i i will great Funk sound like th sound of that 64. well played it three times and kicks ass

  • Fantastic tutorial. Thanks. Check out some Rory Gallagher music. You might enjoy it.

  • i wonder if a guy with average sized hand can do this thumb over bass chord technique(jimi chords).... can a slightly smaller than average finger sized hand do this chords?

  • Yeah I was thinking about that too. My hands are not one of the largest, but yeah it's possible.

But it also depends on the size of the nut I guess...?

  • Thanks all of you....

    Nut as 41mm

  • I sure the hell can't. I wish I could though, I've been trying for months. I can't fret with my thumb at all =p

  • dont put ur palm flat on the back of the neck, and ur root note will feel really wierd, ur thumb isn't going to feel like it's pressing down on the string like u do on ur regular fingers, just trust that it will fret the note

or tune ur E string down a half step and move ur thumb fret up one more fret, so ur thumb is more center than off to the side; it gives more leverage

  • It's definitely possible to do it with a smaller hand. Jimi's hands were huge, but that let him do way more than this; if you see him at woodstock, his thumb will be 3 or 4 frets away from the normal root note of the chord at times. So basically, you should be able to do this with small hands, but not all of the crazy stuff he could do.

  • You can do it as long as your hand is completely filled by the neck. If you have a small hand you can do it with a small/thin neck. If you have long fingers or a big hand, you need a fat/large neck. It won't work any other way.

Right now I'm screwed because I have a thin neck on my guitar and I have long thin fingers. Once I replace my neck with a FAT-C one, I should be able to do this technique.

    Dm

  • this is just too sweet. yes.

  • HA!!Thank you jimicolours-that was so funky!!!

    Gonna play that again!!

  • im curious as to what u are doing meaning when u really get going it sounds as if you are playing rythmn and lead at the same time and i was curious as to kno how u were acheiving that if u feel like sharing that.

  • Wow man, absolutely excellent video. Makes me wish I could use my thumb - glad to see someone's doing it (and doing it right), though!

  • the thumb chords let you move the chord around far better, and the thing is with barre chords, there are only 3 notes in a chord, and barre chords make you repaet those 3 notes again for no reason.

  • This furthur proves my theory that having your thumb over the neck is more efficient than having it behind the behind. Amazing. It'd be even better if you could tab out or post the music notes of how to use the "base" of the chord.

    Thanks.

    -Kevin. Peace and love man.

  • easier on the wrist too

  • Freakin awsome Enrique....as usual!!

  • I really like your sound and style, Enrique... Very nice.

May I ask you which strings you are using?... Are these Fender Pure Nickel strings?

  • Thanks, I use plated nickel stings, GHS guitar boomers...

    Ultra Light+, from 008 1/2 to 040...

  • Thank you very much for the information...

I'll try them out soon. :)

  • jimicolors; Those strings sound like 10's or at least alot heavier than 08's. That must be an original 1960s Strat you are using(?)

  • plated nickel stings, GHS guitar boomers...

    Ultra Light+, from 008 1/2 to 040...

    1964 Stratocaster

    Thanks

  • jimicolors; Wow, no wonder the sound is superb! A 1964 Strat! It's got that special nasalic quality that the new ones just don't have. I have a 1970 Strat that i got 3 yrs after seeing Jimi in London.(used to see him shopping in Central London). Rock on!

  • I love jammin' in G - great licks 8)

  • you're awesome

  • this is my favourite kind of playing, not enough players using this kind of style so much.

  • its cause it;s so damned hard to play like that if your hands and guitar neck arent matched up perfectly. Cant pull this style off with a thin shredder neck or les paul neck. You need something that will fill your hand completely so you can really grip down on the strings and so that there is no gap between your thumb and the fretboard.

    Dm

  • sup enrique long time no talk...WOH!! u really out did yer self on this vid...i learned a whooole lot from that...i knew about the thumb but to do sooo much with that chord....sheeesh keep jammin' enrique

  • Wow you just opened my eyes to what you can do with one chord. Let the experimentation begin and i will never do a barre chord the same again!!!!!!!!!!!

  • nice !

  • u sure no alot about the great man him self
