Electric sense (sensing electrical fields, every living creature generates one) is rather common in water creatures, could be that, or a combination. It is also plausible that the kraken can 'hear' with each tentacle (cephalopods have a small brain in each tentacle, why couldn't the kraken have an 'ear' in each tentacle?).

The Kraken is forced to do Jone's bidding, it was Calypso's Gift to him when he was made captain of the Flying dutchman.

He didn't do anything more then order it to beach itself and die of breath.

The reasoning was purely to show just how much control Becket had over Jones

Well again, the reason for that was due to budget. this scene alone took thousands upon thousands of dollars to create.

The scene for splitting the ship in half was created by dropping two thirty ton steel pipes to literally crack the ship in half. If they messed up, they had to redo the entire ship and scene.

Worlds end just didn't have the money to afford the technology to rebuild the Kraken, Originally, it was supposed to be in the center of the maelstrom. not Calypso
