John Cleese hits it right on the hand; that shit that Americans call the f-word, is really American Rugby. You know, as opposed to real rugby where you aren't allowed to dumly throw the egg-shaped thing forward and catch it while a bunch of idiots in armor smash against each other (Seriously, armor!? Pussies!), where you actually only allowed to throw the ball backward, requiring actual creative teamwork to defeat the other team.
This ranting old blob needs to rant his way to his final resting cave.
The action is DELIBERATELY kept short for sponsorship reason? That is just plain false! The players don't have to think? Quarterback is BY FAR the most complex position in all of sports. You need to know literally hundreds and hundreds of plays with thousands of combinations of routes, blocking packages, and audibles.
The rest of the world doesn't know jack about football.
I dont know why people try to compare the two. There two totally differnt sports. Americans that say soccer isnt a sport obvsuisly dont know sports.....and Foreingers (me being American) that say American football isnt a sport or is stupid dont know anything about sports either or how Americans value American football....I bet people who either disrespect football or soccer havent even been to a real game of them. Personally I like both sports. Go Bayern Muchen and Baltimore Ravens!
@RavensFAN815 No foreigner that I know has claimed that American Rugby isn't a sport, we're just saying it's a really stupid sport, and it's American name is even stupider.
@3DMaster they call it football because when the game waas first played back in the late 1800's all the teams did were run with the ball and kick it. It wasnt until about 40 years after the sport was invented that they started to throw the ball in the 1930's. People outside of Canada and the United States really underestimate American football or "American Rugby" however you call it.
@RavensFAN815 So the idiots playing Rugby were to dumb for it, that they only used the legal kicking the ball forward maneuver, then you changed the name. Then players were lacking skill and smarts for even that and instead getting better skilled players, they just allowed them to throw the ball instead. Americana had no skills, no creativity, liked to bash the other players' heads in so bigger, fatter, dumber players. They went to play a different game, but too dumb to change the name back.
football hasnt caught on in america because we are not a bunch of little girls who act hurt all the time, if our top tier athletes decided to play soccer instead of football and basketball we would be world cup champs in 2014, 2018, 2022...
Soccer is an English term coined in the 1860's coming from the word Association used to maintain the distinction between your other football which came to become rugby. American football is called football because of its origin. It, like soccer, can be traced back to rugby football. Over time, some rules were changed such as the concept of line of scrimmage and of four downs and a certain distance required to get more downs etc etc.
I'm American and I can recognize the real football, so lets not insult all Americans. They should just call American Football, handball since its mostlly play by hands.
@R0bDC Actually, I'm more inclined to call it Tackle ball. I use soccer and football only to differentiate the two sports and I am American. However, I do love soccer, so hate me you drunks.
Do you have any annual derby games in NFL? There is nothing like going to a soccer, hockey or any derby and root for your favorite team, because you know that the only thing you feel for the other team is raw and pure hatred. You're gonna sing, you're gonna curse, you're gonna shout your ass off. In the end, it is all worth it even if your team doesn't win, because you were there to support them. And if you don't get a ticket, you can always find a sports bar and watch the game on television.
@SIperianSusi83 I have no idea what that is so I'm going with no.
Look I get the NFL doesn't have that organized nuts factor that the fans provide. But I totally forgot one thing. After all the NFL teams we have, we still got college football too. And they DO have that organized nuts factor.

@jinx121991 I respect your opinion just like the next guy, But to be honest i can't see creativity in American Football idk, it just doesn't spark for me, And alot of people will agree with me. But thats my opinion and facts are facts. Oh and "futbol" is how you would spell "Football" in Spanish.
@jinx121991 ok i get it, America has rich sport clubs but Manchester United and Real Madrid are the richest clubs and thier Football clubs. But Football is growing here in the States and will later on be more popular. And for the passion, Football fans have way more passion then any other sports. Just look up "European football atmosphere" its amazing.
@krip2nitex3 look I don't want to stoop to Cleese's level of ignorance and say just because our favorite sports differ means one is incapable of enjoyment. Everyone has their own opinion. Mine is that "American" football is better. I just can't stand it when people on here base their stupid arguments on how we name our sport. And make ignorant statements about how it lacks complexity of all things how no one watches it etc. If it was called dingleberry I would still like it more than futbol.
I'd rather watch 5 seconds of action back to back to back to back to back... for 60 minutes than watch 90 minutes of boredom punctuated by 2 or 3 (generous i know) 30 second segments of everyone losing their mind. at least we never tie (2 in the last 15 years). thats like kissing your sister and you do it like every other game.
@jinx121991 Very few people watch American Football compared to the rest of the world. And Im not talking about money. its all about the passion for the sport not the money. Im an American by the way.
@krip2nitex3 the money comes from people watching it and passion for their team you dufus.
these euro soccer teams get their entire country to back a singular (or couple at most) teams. in america we 32 nfl teams, 30 mlb teams and 30 nba teams for 300 million people and it's still the most profitable country for sports in the world.
my only response to that is the world doesn't watch football because only americans play football.
For those who are saying American Football is a complex sport. Haha thats soo ridiculous. Probably the most Boring sport, thats why nobody watches it. Football and Rugby are on top of the sports world.
@krip2nitex3 Yeah no one watches it. Probably why 19 of the top 25 most valuable sports franchises in the world are NFL teams. Why sponsors drop $3.5 million for a 30 second spot in our championship game.
John Cleese is also wrong about the shortness of play. The reason isn't for sponsors otherwise there wouldn't be any breaks in high school. No it's because (American) Football is the most grueling, exhausting sport in the world. It's only for real men. Thats why European's don't play it i guess.
@jinx121991 So why are Rugby players able to keep up 45 min halfs then when that is what American Football emerged from, and Rugby players dont have massive amount of padding or helmets.
if i'm big and strong and i don't mind taking some punches i can find a place in any amateur american football team, if you go every place in the world and you have no idea how to kick a ball you can't even play soccer in your friends backyard.
@lynyrdpez It's a different sport. Wearing pads allows you to hit and tackle at full speed. It is impossible to do that without pulling up or making some sort of adjustment in rugby. I don't know which is more painful since I have only played football. I will give you they are tough but don't ever call a football player a pussy. Those are toughest MoFo's you will ever meet.
@Hammerhook12 I will excuse your ignorance. At first glance it is understandable to call people weighing 300 lbs "fat *asses" but if you saw these guys in person you would be saying "holy shit." Google Tyron Smith. He weighs 280. Yeah there are some fatties like Vince Wilfork but he can squat 500 lbs, bench 375 lbs and run a 4.21 40 yard dash. The best I ever got was 4.3 and I weighed 200 lbs. Not to mention he can plug a running lane like a boss.
@Hammerhook12 As far as the oxygen masks go it's called a competitive advantage. When you have a sport as grueling as football (especially for those lineman) and you have the opportunity to get as much oxygen into your blood stream you take it.
@jinx121991 You take two steps forward and slam your body against another. That get length breaks and time outs every few minutes if not seconds. How is that grueling? Football players have two halves of 45 continues minutes of running all over the field, without a break.
@9lash It's not as simple as calling a play and running it. If you're on offense you have be able to read zone coverage, man coverage, blitzing schemes, stunts etc. If you're on defense you have to be able to read blocking schemes, quarterback tendencies, routs, fakes etc. What do you do for soccer? oh yeah you run around and kick a ball into a 20 foot wide net. Sounds complex. In terms of strategy you are wrong about F1. The engineering aspect is complex though.
@jinx121991 well, let me see... what do you do for soccer? read every fucking single player tendecies, not only one. Have you ever heard about zone in soccer? about in-line defense with 3 or 4 players? About ball possession optimization? Off side tactics? Free Kick schemes? About the best way to use 442, 433, 343, 352, etc? There's no "calling a play" in soccer, the more players touch the ball the best (as in Rugby). I guess that's a little more complicated than you think.
@socmel82 I realize there is more than meets the eye in every sport but come on man. To play in an NFL game you have to know hundreds of pages of plays and spend countless hours studying the other team in the film room. In high school we did 8 hours a week. In the NFL you can quadruple that. It's even more for quarterbacks.
I tried watching American Football, But its to slow and very boring. They stop the game like every 10 seconds its just fucking ridiculous. I'd rather watch Baseball anyday.
@PongoLikesBananas face it: only americans think american football is great cause they are only ones that play it. American football and baseball are the most boring sports ever.
I don't think football is bad because it is simple, how complex a sport is doesnt necessarily make it better. In all fairness there are many different types of football, soccer is a shortened version of Association Football and american football is a variation on rugby football so technically they arent wrong in calling it football. But to me soccer will always be called football, and there is no other feeling in the world than scoring a goal (or seeing your team score).
@terrencemccann I somewhat agree.I play and watch both for different reasons.I favor American Football though for watching, because of the strategy. But Soccer is great as well.
@Aoshish if you cant see why the whole world watches football the real version ,while only american gives a shit about handegg you are obviously fucking stupid oh wait your american
@seksyen4babyface I'm not american nor stupid and I can see why "the whole world" watches soccer: It's a very simple sport. It is easy to understand and play.
Saying that soccer is better than american football because more people watch soccer is like saying that watching TV is better than reading books.
the only reason soccer is soo popular in the world is because of 3rd world countries which cant affrod too buy $123 football helmets or shoulder pads as for soccer all u need is a ball to kick and trash cans for a goal american football gear cost way more then soccer FACT!
In New Zealand we call it soccer, no idea why, we were predominantly British in living memory. We could be accused of calling rugby 'football', however there is a lot more kicking and we cheat by colloquially calling it 'footy'. I think that saves us from this criticism, although i have been know to be delusional.
You know it's like bf3 vs mw3 there both different n have there similarities but there also 2 good sports people will never stop fighting either tht said as a high school football player football is alot tuffer you are constantly hit n and requires thinking such as seeing a formation n trying to decider the area the play might go n thn calling an audible but I am bias because soccer players are viewed as pussys in America
Someone saying that there is no thinking in American football, that is truly funny.
I have played both sports for years and can tell you that American football takes a lot more thinking than soccer. I love soccer, it is my favorite sport, but when a game is constant like soccer, it is really more instinct than anything. Football on the other hand has people thinking more than they are playing, what play are they going to run, will this guy blitz, anyone who hasnt played cant understand.
the name Soccer comes from Association Football, it some how came from the word Association. I do wish there was more Soccer in the United States and less American Football but arguing about the name is dumb. If you say Soccer everyone knows what your talking about
@PleaseButterMyToast That's why USA is the only country playing it for real and not having their own world cup lol. A sport which has multiple countries playing for an end goal = a trophy or cup to be named the best, will always excite the world more than the boring sport which is only in 1 country.
The names "soccer" and "football" were both created by the British and applied to their respective sports (soccer and American football, respectively). This is why I hate soccer: The fans. They're all twats about it. God forbid someone deign to enjoy a game that you don't. How could we, the simplest of the simple, possibly create anything that might be of equal entertainment value? This is the "my dad could beat up your dad" argument. Only our dad doesn't feign injury to draw penalties. Suck it.
@Ricklesworth1908 You're absolutely one hundred percent wrong. The official name of what you call "soccer" has always been football in England. Hence why the governing body is called the FOOTBALL association and the league system is called the FOOTBALL league, and the best player wins FOOTBALLER of the year.Soccer was an extremely unpopular nickname at best used by one set of students along with football as a slang term in Oxford. Stop believing your US propaganda and "suck" up some knowledge.
@Idlethumb88 Yes, but the name soccer came from england. Which is why there are other countries that call it soccer too. It's not American propaganda, you guys just make a big fucking deal out of it. Its the same god damn game.
@Idlethumb88 The point was that soccer was a term invented in England. That fact is irrefutable. The reason Americans use the term football for American Football is that was a game evolved from rugby, or Rugby Union Football. Instead of calling it rugby, it was called football, and Association Football is called soccer in the states is to end the confusion between American Football and Association Football.
@Ricklesworth1908 Terms soccer and football both originated in England? LOL. Are you drunk? The term 'soccer' became popular only in America after second world war. It was an acronym created from 'Association football'. Hence the term, 'Soccer'.
@warnpassion - Soccer is short for Association Football, very true. But the term did in fact originate in England. It dates back to the period where Association Football and Rugby Football both were know as just Football, that would be in the late 19th century.
@warnpassion Wrong! It originated only in America because you were the ones who wanted to play football with different rules. So you created American football and called the original football as soccer.
@warnpassion - Unfortunately you are one who is wrong here, buddy! The term soccer was coined by college students in England in the late 1800s. Why do you even think the game was called Association Football? To distinguish it from Rugby Football, which was also known as 'football' at that time. It just so happened that college students loved shortening words and names, and ending them with -er. That's where the terms soccer and rugger came from.
@SIperianSusi83 finally someone who's giving an informed opinion. Too many people are posting here with their hearts and passion and giving opinions that are irrational and in many cases dumb, I'm glad there are some people like yourself that knows what they're talking about before posting.
@SIperianSusi83 Am I speaking Chinese here? From the past two comments I have been constantly saying that this term was started by the Americans which became immensely popular after the second world war. Football was always called as football since its origin and will always be in the future. Same is the case with Rugby. What references do you have for your claims?
@warnpassion - You may speak klingon for all I care, the fact still remains you are wrong. You can check the facts online or in any good book on the matter. All of them state that both soccer and rugger evolved from earlier football games, both calling themselves 'football'. You'll also find that the terms 'soccer', 'rugger' and 'footer' all originated at Oxford University 40 years before WW2. I don't think you're going to accept what you're reading, so I dare you to bring out your references.
Soccer vs. football is a pointless debate because they are both inferior games. Why not try playing ice hockey like we Canadians do. :) It is a lot harder to skate than to run. But not only that you get pushed into the boards and have to use a stick to get a tiny puck into a small net with a goalie in it. In soccer if you push someone you get a colour card lol.
@supremecy38 Bullshit. American football is an extremely mental game. What do you think they're doing they're doing between every play? It's called strategizing. If you're going to bash on a sport, at least learn something about it first.
@Bloodshark123 It is strategic, admittedly. But nowhere near as much as real football or soccer for you. And really the only strategic ones are the coaches and the quarterback. At least in football, all players need to know what they're doing and have some form of their own skill and creativity. Players are often on the field for a continuous 90 minutes where as american football players, can be on for seconds to a few minutes at a time,
"And really the only strategic ones are the coaches and the quarterback." I stopped there. You clearly know absolutely nothing about American football.
i wouldn't say football players don't have to think. there's a a bunch of variables in place on every place. it's more like a war game when you get into the tactical side of it. football players watch hours of gametape of opposing players every day in the week before they play eachother. soccer is much more free flowing whereas football is chess with unpredictable pieces. both are pretty damn awesome when you get into them.
1. The term soccer was invented in England. shorthand for association football.
2. American football evolved from rugby football. nobody complains about that.
3. Football was NEVER called football because you kick it. It was called football because you play it on your feet, as opposed to on a horse. up until the mid to late 19th century, the rules to every game were only what the two teams agreed on beforehand
@Theriot6592 there is still a sport were you can kick as well as grab the ball and you have both a soccer goal and a H shaped goal, and you can bassically do wathever you want, its called gaelic football.
wow its extremely suckish that most people preffer soccer before football, you have to be an athlete , it takes a lot of hard work, in soccer its just kick the ball, thats it, nothing else just kick the fucking ball.... and please ignorant fags calling it hand egg I mean wtf?? then you play orange?
@JohnsMeade how about you try to play soccer vs europeans?? You americans have no clue how to play soccer. I bet you never ran for 90 minutes in your entire life. Only kick the ball?? famous Professional soccer players earn around 100 thousand dollars a week. so why dont you try it then, if its that easy??? you must be a kid for stating crap like you do
@JohnsMeade your ancestors are spanish, but you growed up in usa. you are american so ... (i know a million spaniards that would hurt you really bad for saying that)
As much as I usually like John Cleese, this should probably be titled "John Cleese's ignorant football rant". Even a basic understanding of football history will leave you shaking your head wondering how someone let this get into a documentary.
@9thunknownman Even a basic understanding of who John Cleese is will leave you shaking your head wondering how someone could confuse this humorous (although quite accurate) rant with a documentary
John Cleese hits it right on the hand; that shit that Americans call the f-word, is really American Rugby.
Being big is his job. He ain't unfit though.
jinx121991 23 hours ago
@Hammerhook12 As far as the oxygen masks go it's called a competitive advantage. When you have a sport as grueling as football (especially for those lineman) and you have the opportunity to get as much oxygen into your blood stream you take it.
jinx121991 22 hours ago
@jinx121991 You take two steps forward and slam your body against another. That get length breaks and time outs every few minutes if not seconds. How is that grueling? Football players have two halves of 45 continues minutes of running all over the field, without a break.

9lash 5 days ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@9lash It's not as simple as calling a play and running it. The engineering aspect is complex though.
jinx121991 5 days ago
@jinx121991 well, let me see... what do you do for soccer? read every fucking single player tendecies, not only one. Have you ever heard about zone in soccer? about in-line defense with 3 or 4 players? About ball possession optimization? Off side tactics? Free Kick schemes? About the best way to use 442, 433, 343, 352, etc? There's no "calling a play" in soccer, the more players touch the ball the best (as in Rugby). I guess that's a little more complicated than you think.
socmel82 4 days ago
@socmel82 I realize there is more than meets the eye in every sport but come on man. To play in an NFL game you have to know hundreds of pages of plays and spend countless hours studying the other team in the film room. In high school we did 8 hours a week. In the NFL you can quadruple that. It's even more for quarterbacks.

Suck it.
Ricklesworth1908 2 weeks ago
@Ricklesworth1908 You're absolutely one hundred percent wrong. The official name of what you call "soccer" has always been football in England. Hence why the governing body is called the FOOTBALL association and the league system is called the FOOTBALL league, and the best player wins FOOTBALLER of the year.Soccer was an extremely unpopular nickname at best used by one set of students along with football as a slang term in Oxford. Stop believing your US propaganda and "suck" up some knowledge.
Idlethumb88 2 weeks ago 40
@Idlethumb88 Yes, but the name soccer came from england. Which is why there are other countries that call it soccer too. It's not American propaganda, you guys just make a big fucking deal out of it. Its the same god damn game.
AlphaMale593 2 weeks ago

@Idlethumb88 The point was that soccer was a term invented in England. That fact is irrefutable. The reason Americans use the term football for American Football is that was a game evolved from rugby, or Rugby Union Football. Instead of calling it rugby, it was called football, and Association Football is called soccer in the states is to end the confusion between American Football and Association Football.
bstorrs256 2 weeks ago
@Ricklesworth1908 Terms soccer and football both originated in England? LOL. Are you drunk? The term 'soccer' became popular only in America after second world war. It was an acronym created from 'Association football'. Hence the term, 'Soccer'.
warnpassion 1 week ago
@warnpassion - Soccer is short for Association Football, very true. But the term did in fact originate in England. It dates back to the period where Association Football and Rugby Football both were know as just Football, that would be in the late 19th century.
SIperianSusi83 1 week ago
@warnpassion Wrong! It originated only in America because you were the ones who wanted to play football with different rules. So you created American football and called the original football as soccer.
warnpassion 1 week ago
@warnpassion - Unfortunately you are one who is wrong here, buddy! The term soccer was coined by college students in England in the late 1800s. Why do you even think the game was called Association Football? To distinguish it from Rugby Football, which was also known as 'football' at that time. It just so happened that college students loved shortening words and names, and ending them with -er. That's where the terms soccer and rugger came from.
By the way, I'm not american. I'm swedish.
SIperianSusi83 1 week ago

@stubs96 - Well thanks. I don't know how much these trolls are going to digest, but at least it is worth a try. Let'em bring it.
SIperianSusi83 5 days ago
@SIperianSusi83 Am I speaking Chinese here? From the past two comments I have been constantly saying that this term was started by the Americans which became immensely popular after the second world war. Football was always called as football since its origin and will always be in the future. Same is the case with Rugby. What references do you have for your claims?
warnpassion 6 days ago
@warnpassion - You may speak klingon for all I care, the fact still remains you are wrong. You can check the facts online or in any good book on the matter. All of them state that both soccer and rugger evolved from earlier football games, both calling themselves 'football'. You'll also find that the terms 'soccer', 'rugger' and 'footer' all originated at Oxford University 40 years before WW2. I don't think you're going to accept what you're reading, so I dare you to bring out your references.
SIperianSusi83 5 days ago
I like both sports. Both sports take skill, both are good. If you think one of the sports doesn't take skill, you are a delusional fuckwit idiot.

Soccer vs. football is a pointless debate because they are both inferior games. Why not try playing ice hockey like we Canadians do. :) It is a lot harder to skate than to run. But not only that you get pushed into the boards and have to use a stick to get a tiny puck into a small net with a goalie in it. In soccer if you push someone you get a colour card lol.

Bloodshark123 2 weeks ago
@Bloodshark123 It is strategic, admittedly. But nowhere near as much as real football or soccer for you. And really the only strategic ones are the coaches and the quarterback. At least in football, all players need to know what they're doing and have some form of their own skill and creativity. Players are often on the field for a continuous 90 minutes where as american football players, can be on for seconds to a few minutes at a time,

i wouldn't say football players don't have to think. there's a a bunch of variables in place on every place. it's more like a war game when you get into the tactical side of it. football players watch hours of gametape of opposing players every day in the week before they play eachother. soccer is much more free flowing whereas football is chess with unpredictable pieces. both are pretty damn awesome when you get into them.
