i found a studer vista 5 on ebay for $111,500.00 which is not a lot considering the midas xl 8 is around $350,000.00....although the midas has some awesome features. one i think is great is the 360 degree phasing adjustment, as apposed to most which give you in phase or 180 degrees out of phase. this eliminates going well does it sound better in or 180 out, with the midas you dial it right were it needs to be. this would be used for multiple mics on the same instrument at different distances.
and then...perhaps you want to mic the crowd in a number of spots...you see? now say you're Carlos Santana, with 6 percussion players with 6 mics a piece (his show is unbelievable for a percussion lover)... 86 sounds like a lot if you've been in 4-track mode....
big shows use multiple mic'd drums, multiple mic'd intruments, multitude of guitars with their own input, video sound inputs (a big show is BIG) so 86 channels sounds convoluted, but you soon run out
simple is a 3 piece on a 2x4 and plywood stage, or the floor....
if you wanted to record them on tracks, or broadcast through speakers for a larger audience at a concert, you need 3 inputs for voice mics, 3 inputs for three instruments if you go the simpliest route that's 6 inputs used-up already.
The simplicity of music has changed alot in the last few years it is not about simplicity it is about being able to handle all of the creativity that your artist and management can throw at you as audio engineers we must have tools that can be ready to perform on demand. engineers would love to mix just the basic inputs but the bigger your act gets the more they want Stuart and Jon have a big task and they need big options.
the simplicity of music is gone since multitracking was available. Even "old" records of the beatles and such were done in 48-156 tracks on Ampex/MCI/Studer's. Whats the estimated price of a 5SR in this configuration, and is the channel strip still analogue?
Custom software? Holly shit!

what are you guys talking about "simplicity of music!?"
say "recording" please.
does a 3 day symphony that took 28 years to compose sound simple? and that was done before recording existed.
recording is just trying to keep up with the real experience.
