I have the same issue.. Had the steering box replaced, no change. Needed new steering, so everything is now new.. upper/lower control arms, steering linkages, tie rod ends, trackbar, steering box, steering pump, steering dampener, and ball joints. still pops when i turn the wheel.. turns into more of a bang if i'm turning, and hit something like a pot hole.. its slowly driving me insane.
@Sh3llsh0ck what about axial damper bearings? try anyway to determine the exact location of the sound, use long screwdriver or mechanical stethoscope if you can find one, get someone to wobble the steering wheel and you touch with the tip of screwdriver or stethoscope all the suspicious locations. you need patience with this, but you will certainly find what it is.
i have a knocking or deep clicking sound on the front passenger side under the car, it is a noise that cycles, and when i hit the breaks to slow down it disappears. the sound seems to occur around speeds of 15mph and below and specially in glide speed where there no gas pedal pressure is applied. i think the knocking sound is coming from the front axle around the right tire (passenger side). WHAT COULD THE PROBLEM BE???
If you haven't figured it out yet, if sounds loud enough you should be able to have somebody grab ahold of all the connecting points of the steering carefully and you should be able to feel the the pop noise and figure out where it's coming from.
i have 4 TJ's on my street, 2 have changed the box, im waiting for mine to be delivered. Disable the pittman arm to the linkage, and see for yourself. Or this may be a stretch, but it may be a bearing hub. Good luck with it.
Mine is making this EXACT same sound. I went under, and it seems to be coming from the steering box? It's hard to tell for sure though, with all the moving parts under there. I'd be VERY interested to know what this ended up being.
yeah I checked everything and it was all tight, so I dont know what the cause is. sounds actually like it might be coming from the steering shaft u-joints
@fastyellow7 thats exactly what it is, i have a 2004 wj lifted and replaced the steering box thinking that was the problem but of course not. its coming from the steering shaft u joints spray some grease into them and it will go away after a couple drives but it will come back at some point
i have the same problem! let me know what you did to help fix yours. heres an idea though..... check your track bar bolt on the axle end front. mine egged itself out and caused issues. i made a bracket then welded in on, got rid of most the problems, no i have this dumb clunk
I have this exact same problem on my 2001 Ford Focus.
We've had to get the CV Joint replaced twice.
The clunking noise started, then the 1 that was originally on the car when I bought it got removed.
It got replaced with a new 1, still there was a clunking noise. My Dad thought the CV Joint wasn't lubed. So he exchanged the part for a 3rd 1.
3rd 1 got put on....still clunking.
Oh yeah, there's only a clunking noise when I turn left & the noise is coming from the front driver side.

@Sh3llsh0ck I forgot, you should place your ear to the other end of screwdriver while listening to a possible source of noise...

steering box bolts might be loose

so what caused it?

I see your steering box moving, and it shouldn't be moving. Probably the frame and supports can't handle the extra tension of the lift.

Did you figure this out yet? I think mine is the connection at tracbar and axle. Bolt hole is wore out.

sounds like you need to hit all of those grease fittings with a grease gun man..that is why their there.

steering box, notorious jeep issue, im changing mine next week

@mmiller7991 what are you talking about. Those have never been a problem in jeeps. They get a bit noisy when you turn fully, but that's it

Take off your drop pitman arm and check the bite it has around the part where it connects to the steering pump
