That's some of the best Lester I've heard. Hard to believe that's the same player I saw at JATP 1956 in Milwaukee. He had to be led on and off the stage, and just stood there in an alcoholic stupor--a mere 7 years after this performance. And that trombonist must be one of jazz' best-kept secrets. It's the first 16 bars of Bird's 2nd chorus (on a 32-bar "Rhythm" tune) that tower above anything else on the session--especially when he changes keys briefly beginning at the 9th bar.
@Exilatus Yeah, I dropped $180 on my set back in 1998 - can't blame ya a bit.
I think the cut you may be talking about is "J.A.T.P. Blues", and I indeed have that posted. Tell you what: Keep an eye open in your inbox here - I'll shoot the playlist link to you that has all the JATP stuff I've posted thus far (including the complete original content of JATP Volumes 1-14 as they were originally released). :)
63 vids, including some previously (prior to 1998) stuff!
@schnieef Wait'll you get a load of Prez' solo on "I Got Rhythm" from the original JATP volume 14 (Aprill 22, 1946 concert that's said to have had a 16 year old Clint Eastwood in the audience) - man, it flat COOKS anything in the room that's above freezing! Bird finishes an aloof solo and Prez grabs hold & just RIDES that damn thing through 3 choruses! Just leaves everyone shaking & holding on for dear life!
@sideshowtink Yep - my trusty Garrard is a dedicated 78rpm table - and she's about due for a new pickup/stylus combo. There's still some life there, but, I've played well over 600 sides for YouTube uploads alone & the combo's strating to get a bit tired.. ;)

Thanks for all these JATP records ! I wanted to buy the CDs but it's so damn expensive...
Did you upload a JATP where we can hear Lester Young vs Coleman Hawkins (I mean as if it really was a duel only between them, like in a jam session).
Prez and Bird are the best !
Thanks again !

bird's solo here makes the others sound like guy lombardo vs. the beatles.

That's certainly one of my favorite Prez solos. It has it all: swing, humor, taste and his classic light sound.

What happened to your turntable that you don't have a player for LP's? Thanks for the lovely morning wake up music!

@sideshowtink Stolen in a break-in back in 2003, Tink - super nice Technics direct drive from the late 1980's.

@SwingMan1937 so sad! OH, so the other TT you use is set up only for 78's?
