The journey of Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, in Into the Woods, largely references sexual tension and sexual discovery. In Little Red's song "I know things now" she goes on to explain how "He showed me things, many wonderful things. That I hadn't thought to explore."
The wolf is a very sexual character... so yes, there's a penis on his costume.
my school is doing this and the directors son is the wolf so shes actually making him do the thrust at the end. also we have identical twins playing cinderella's and rapunzel's princes. they were really freaky at auditions when they sang "agony" together. we are hoping to do what they did on the broadway version and have the witch be on a floating chair in the opening when shes talking to the baker and his wife. not only that, but I AM JACK!! WOOHOO! my best friend is a cow!
I got to meet Robert Westenberg when I was a Sophomore in high school. He came to my theatre class and he was pretty damn cool! He lives in my town. :)
this is a symbol for child molesters and being addicted without control thats why Cinderella's prince and the wolf are usually played by the some person
Watching this in Drama class, the same version to. This scene was so well done, walking in place like they do. Though the wolf penis was a tad distracting because plays/movies are /never/ anatomic correct with wolves. Or at least wolfmen.
I performed this show over a dozen times this summer, and have seen this song performed countless other times, and never once have I thought that he was planning on having sex with her. Yes, he talks about her flesh, but in the same way that beef is cow flesh. I think you're way off.
@atrain118 if you read one of the old version of little red before it was made a children's story by disney it is about carnal desire, and since into the woods is almost the old versions of the fairy tales, yes it is carnal
i just hate danielle ferland. i hated her in a little night music, i hate her in this. i concentrated on that more than the wolf penis. although that was pretty striking.
They showed this at governor's school for the arts in sc, omg i cant believed they would show this at that school! lol XD i ended up havin a dream about this part the same night...NO LIE! lol
saw this in highschool when i was in choir..cracked me up when i saw the extra bits lol. To imagine they were coolw ith putting that in a scene where a girl who couldnt have been more then maybe 15 was involved. but comical none the less
We watched this in our honors chorus class. Our teacher unplugged the video cable for this part and I was curious as to why. Now I know.... xD Why would they make the costume like that?
Ditto.... except we saw what he was wearing before he fast forwarded it. Now that I watched it, it wasn't too bad. Just the.....distraction of the costume.
I love this song. I'm playing the wolf in my schools showing of "Into The Woods" (sorry, no penis on the costume) and what ticks me off is that I only get to do part of the full song :( but i still love being the wolf, it's awesome, just like the rest of the play :)
i wonder if Danielle Ferland was destracted by his well thing..... omg how horable would it be if he accedently got a bonner on stage during the song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have always been particularly fond of this cast's rendition of Into the Woods. And I have always appreciated the adult nature of this fractured fairy tale adventure. However... only upon watching this vid, with another window on top revealing only a fraction of the video window, just *how* adult this production of Into the Woods really was. I have this dvd and I watch itl ike EVERYDAY! its one of my favorite musicals! my towns theatre company is also doing and Im hoping to be Little Red!!
those of you arguing the point of the meaning of the song are all correct, it has many meanings, just look at the deliberate choice of lyrics. the wolf describes his feelings of carnality, which by definition supports both of your arguments, no-one is wrong here, just those looking at one side of the story could do with opening thier eyes and seeing the wider picture.
i like this song i know the message in it but i just like it because its happen to me someone tried to take me so this is a really good song and so listen to it and stay away from sexual predators
Actually Sondheim's song reflects what the original fairy tale meant--which (if you ignore the Grimm Brother's version) includes the wolf luring her into her grandmother's house and making her not only do a strip tease for him but also climb into bed with him--it was to warn young girls from letting older men a.k.a. sexual predators from taking advantage of them....its all there in the lyrics if you take a look ^^
It's because he is a sexual predator - to be more specific this wolf is a personification of a pedophile. Listen to the lyrics and you'll find that Little Red is actually lured in by the wolf and he takes advantage of her
it COULD be sexual predator awareness too. BUT this song was written to describe the wolfs hunger appetite and how he finds eating to be so good, its sexual. which kinda explains the costume, wolves are natually naked too btw
