Sympathy for pirates=none. Maybe if they'd stop kidnapping innocent people for ransom and attacking other countries' ships, they wouldn't need to be made examples of.
Death is never a good thing, but it's clear it's the only form of diplomacy that works with these guys.
I'm a bit confused. Some of the clips here, especially 0:30 is from footage of Dutch marines recapturing a German ship. Is this cheap reuse of footage by the news company or is this a confusion of who actually freed the ship?
The fishing subject is something overlooked. Of course if others are stealing their livelyhood. They have a right to terrorize passing ships. Leave people alone! Leave Iraq, Iran, Afganistan, Palistine, Egypt, Isreal all of Africa ALONE!
For those of you who don't know, most of the sailors used to be fishermen whose boats were destroyed by the same countries whose sailors have been taken hostages for the past few years (including Russia).
The best way to fight piracy is to give the pirates back their fishing boats and to stop illegal fishing by the so-called "first world countries".
p.s. the amount of revenue made from fishing was twice the amount pirates make from demanding ransoms
Amazing. I noted that it only took you leftys several years to cook up this imaginative excuse for those poor downtrodden Somalis that would pin the blame on Whitey.
The pirates problem is that they victimize everyone's ships equally, therefore they have no well-funded cheering section or lobbyists. I guess someone in the liberal media finally felt obliged to concoct this story as any enemy of civilization had to be their friend somehow.
@aliyeve791 Bla, bla, bla. There would be no illlegal fishing, if those dumbfucks of Somalia didnt spend past 3 decades killing each other. It is their own fault and responsibility.
Perhaps when they stop spending all their resources on more weapons and invest it into education and infrastructure... ah, who am I kidding. If they behave like monkeys, just treat them that way. Civilization is based around respect of private property, something those people do not understand.
It's problem of US...who alse speak so much about human rights in Russia n China))))Here u go...a country citizens of whos don't even heard about human rights!!!
@aliyeve791 To far gone now, at first it started as chasing illegal fishers away, then they tried to ransom those they captured. Somalis realized they could make a couple million out of ransoms, so they continued on with that. They stopped protecting their fishing spots. Also keep in mind the money from ransom is tax free, and isn't a pay check. So the average Somali didn't get as much from fishing as they would from ransom money.
the footage, aint russian marines.... dutch marines. this was on the dutch news .. the footage of the ship was a dutch rescue on a German Cargo ship captured.
Penalty for piracy USED to be a rope. Now the "most ruthless nation on earth" (Russia) threatens them with 15 years. Are they serious? 15 years in a Russian prison (what with Amnesty International & the Red Crescent checking up on you) is probably better than LIFE in Somalia. The food would be better, the medical care would be better and the bugs would be smaller.
@flitandersen prison in Russia is not prison in the US.Maybe the bugs would be smaller but that just means you're hungrier because the food would not be better.
medical care??? dude, some prisons are powered by an experimental version of nuclear energy. the idea is that if it blows, nobody knows. (or cares)
My understanding is that the Russian captain put the pirates back on their ship and and sank it.
At sea, a ships captain is judge and jury. Piracy MUST be stopped, just like hijackers and highwaymen. The free flow of goods and people is essential for civilized life. It seems to me that the matter of what happens to the pirate should be left up to the ship's captain. If he wants to hang them, so be it!
In what world? Yes, a captain has broad powers, but only over his own crew. He has no right act judge and jury, and he cannot hang anyone, in any navy.
@TzunSu In the 16th and 17th centuries when piracy was common, the punishment was hanging. To me that is still appropriate. Captains who capture pirate ships and pirates should hang them forthwith!
@mc0558 not quite. the russian captain put them on a ship with 'hardly' sufficient supplies to get back to shore. He did not actively sink the ship, however the pirates did not reach land.
@Konstiin In my opinion, the only way economically and effectively to deal with this menace is for captains together with, say, two other officers to try captured pirates and carry out the sentence immediately. This scum deserves what it gets.
So there are 2 solutions : the pirates got killed by an overzealous naval infantry team and the officials were too ashamed to admit it or they are waiting in some FSK basement waiting for some obscure trial away from the the big nose of the UN.
Hahaha, the navy never ceases to amaze me with their awfully clumsy coverups. Somali pirates aren't newbies at what they do, if they got that far by themselves, they either used a mothership or are pretty serious navigators. Even left adrift, 300 miles aren't that much in an inflatable boat when the African coast is that big. You just can't miss it. Also, the only reason why they would turn off their radio in such busy waters would be because they got rescued.
@OldDirtyRatbastard Sources in Russian MoD suggested what the surviving pirates captured by Russian marines was set free to sail back to Somalia. And then the pirates boat ...uhm...vanished from the radar screen sometime after for some reason. A bit of old fashioned Russian ruthlessness is what is needed to deal with the somali pirate issue in these enlightened progressive times.
@fitte6 They said the pirates were released without navigational equipment, so they died at sea, which is stupid for the reasons i mentioned. What disappeared was the distress radio signal, hinting that the pirates turned it off to avoid detection. If they were killed during boarding, that's a pirate's death, nothing to be ashamed of. If they are on "covert trial", that isn't a bad solution either. But killing "suspected pirates" on sight... Since when is armed robbery punishable by death ?
In the words of the Russian MOD: " They likely died". I don't believe the Russian navy outright executed the somalis on the spot nor atached a timed charge on the inflatable. But beeing stuck in a float sent a drift 350 miles away from shore, most likely without food and water, is not a picnic either. Since we can not execute, or even effectivly trial, pirates the old fashion way - leaving them to paddle home with somewhat bad odds of survival may not be a bad sollution.
@fitte6 They supposedly put them back on their own boat, which means that they made it to the spot with it, or with a mothership. The assumption that they are dead was based on the fact that the took their navigational equipment. Navigating with the sun and the stars, they could have covered a good distance without running out of fuel and paddled on the rest of the way, that is if they weren't rescued first. True, it's a fair solution, but i doubt that the navy would do things that way.
Russians, well, apperar to have considerably less restective ROE and less bound of political correctness than western navies wasting resources in the area. I wonder if it's possible to pay Russia and possibly China for securing routes around the Horn of Africa. I bet they could very effective in deterring pirates, maybe to the point of setting captured pirates a drift in the middle of the ocean without a boat or float.
@fitte6 It's true that the Russians and Chinese have a reputation for ruthlessness, but we are not monsters. The navy and spec-ops wouldn't hesitate to use the "brutal" method, meaning less negotiation and more attacks and sabotage, but no one would ever throw people overboard or summarily execute prisoners simply to intimidate some lawless pirates. And if you are favorable to the use of such methods against simple shipjacking, well, you are a fool.
They were not suspected pirates, they were pirates caught on the ship they had no business being on. Russians put them into inflatable boat without any navigational equipment and left them adrift. They could have paddled with their hands. I watched the video showing that Russians burnt the pirate's speed boats. The bastards did not get very far, I am sure of it. If the Russians helped the float to sink so much the better.
@MarekK64 I wasn't talking about the pirates in this particular video but of the idea to sunk SUSPECTED pirates on sight. Now back to the video, the only witnesses of the "release" were some sailors on the ship who described the boat as an inflatable. The navy and the officials didn't make any comment about the conditions of the release, the class of the inflatable, the pirates' boat or about paddles. They merely said that "they took away their navigational equipment". That means bad coverup.
They've been dispatched to their maker. I love the Russian release methods. I've been told the slim blacks tried to overpower the soldiers and take over the battle ship. They made it to the command bridge after killing an undisclosed number of soldiers and mariners. The commandos killed them in there.
@vd172hb Don't worry, i think that all of them - germans, russians, anglo-saxons, frenches make a good job. And every their operation - it is heroism. And videoreports - only the symbols of great fighting )))))))
