What I love about Bea is that the odds were against her making it at the beginning of her career. She didn't exactly look the part of a starlet. And then to peak in her early fifties. Beautiful. No one could deliver a line like Bea.
I don't think Bea was speaking ill of Esther. I think she was just saying that she believed Esther to be more of a serious or dramatic actress as oppose to a comedian. They were both on the RuPaul show before Esther died and they seemed like they really liked one another.
I really enjoyed this interview. I adore Bea Arthur's honesty.
Sometimes I get a feeling that when some other actors/actresses are commenting on their co-stars or whatever, there is an underlying sense of falsness about them, but it seemed to me that Bea's comments concerning her co-stars was nothing but the honest truth.
In fact the entire interview seemed that way to me which I think is just *so* refreshing and ever so lovely to hear.
Thanks for posting this. Muchly appreciated indeed. :-)
Karen Herman, you have done such a great job here. Thank you. I also must add how impressed I was with Bill Macy. He's my favorite actor, his character was so lovable and he put it out there perfectly! Another one of my heroes. Wolf, if you're reading this, thanks a lot.
This is the best interview I've ever seen of Bea Arthur. There's a lot of time here, a lot. Much time for 'real talk', not fast back and forth phony Hollywood gibble gabble. I also really like when Bea inquired, "Why do you ask that?" When she was confronted about the Maude Psychiatrist episode. It wasn't addressed, but probably asked because of the stigma of any kind of mental illness.
The girl doing the interviewing really doesn't listen does she...she just asks her questions and doesn't listen to the answers but Bea the pro that she is really helps her out

It's also nice to see someone who's done good work not wrapping themselves in false modesty. More of that Bea Arthur honesty!

Surprised what Bea said about Esther Rolle, they seem to be having a good time when you see them togethor.
I know Esther had a few disagreements on Good Times with the production crew on JJ,i love the character of Florida.

Maude was really the best. Bea Arthur is really the best. She's enough to make me go hetero.
