Great job Momaduck62!! Thanx so much for sharing. I'm a "backyard farmer" myself and I just enjoy seeing what others are doing/how they're doing it. Don't bother about the negative comments, particulary the unproductive ones.
Just go for the ones that give you something to work with and you'll be ok. Yes, there may be other much cheaper/perhaps less time consuming methods to do what you did; but you also gave people ideas through your demo!
Others have been encouraged in the process!! Thanx.
There was a time that weeding was one big problem for me. I found the answer. It is worth it to invest in a shredder. I paid about $300 for mine. Put lots of mulch around the base of your plants and you will have no weeds. Works real good for me. Check YouTube, there are some good video's on making a shredder out of an old lawnmower. Might want to try that and save a few dollars. Good luck to all of you garderners.
Great video. Thanks for showing us. I wanted to comment on the tar paper, but I see others already did. :)
Another note I would like to make is that I really hope you guys are making your own compost by now. It's easy, rewarding and saves you from taking trash to the curb.
If you do another like this you may want to keep the width about 4 feet,I am guessing you have to get inside the bed to plant it??This will compact the soil over time, which would be a shame especially after you put so much hard work into making something with such a loose friable growing medium. Otherwise great job,I'd imagine this would make one heck of a potato bed as well as what you already may have grown. Thanks for the video..............
thank you to all that commented on my video , i did take the tar paper out, and this year i used the soil from my garden over the years and planted stright in the ground, plus i did a carboard garden ( red neck garden) look it up on google thats what its called lol , and i thought i was trying something new, i will have a video up of how that is turning out , thanks again for commenting good or bad
I would understand if you were on a roof or a terrace of a tall building but until someone explains me why they don't dig, I will dig. I have a tool which enables me to dig your space in about 20 minutes flat, how long did it take you to place your planks and tar??
@aaaarrrgggghh Anytime you "dig",or any kind of mechanical cultivation deeper than the top two inches. You disturb the infrastructure of living organisms beneath the soil. These beneficials' help create the perfect environment for naturally invigorating plant growth and production. The health of the plants above goes far beyond what you can see with the naked eye.Along with aeriating the soil earthworms and beneficial microbes and nematodes can be destroyed through digging.
@aaaarrrgggghh This method you prepare the bed once for the life of its use, after that you simply continue to add organic material a couple times a year, amending the soil and feeding the plants. It also allows for plants to be planted closer reducing weeds and warms up earlier than the surrounding ground. So while you're digging ,weeding and fertilizing your garden using the "traditional" method, this method allows the gardener to plant ,water and enjoy more production in less space sooner.
Great vid! Thank you for sharing with us. I have been looking into doing something like this. The way I garden now is a lot of work and all the weeding and stuff makes me not grow certain veggies. When it becomes easier to just buy them, it takes the fun out of growing your own. I am going to check out your other vids to see how things have progressed. Looks like you and your family have fun together too.
Good job. I can't believe some of the comments people leave. I guess some folks can't operate unless they tear someone else down daily. Try constructive criticism people.
i dont know what your problem is with the music, your the only one that commented on the music, i think it adds to the video , and i have information on what i did
@Momaduck62 agree momaduck, what is wrong with the music? nothing. The only thing wrong is the negative comment about it. So go build a no dig garden, and pick your own music, and post it on yt for us all to enjoy.
First of all ,it wasn't a failure , i had a great garden that year and second of all , your the joke not me, because you dont know what your talking about
Nice video, really enjoyed it. I'm just getting into raised gardens and finding so may great tips from people like you! I was surprised you bought top soil by the bag?
You can usually get a 1/2 ton truck load delivered for 50 or 60 bucks. But still I like you garden.
Not a bad way to do it! I was considering doing something simialr myself. Thanks for posting this step by step vid! Most important, it looks like you all had a blast doing it. In the end, that's what's important!
I am becomming a Gardener as we speak but God help me if they are all cruel like,
kc5807. I thought Gardening was suppose to make people happy!!! Don't worry if you did something less then ideal with your Garden, You can always make a pathway down the midle... And nature has a way of dealing with toxins and your plants from that Garden wont be certified organic but they will be very healthy and safe to eat!!! Good luck :-)
If required at all, use weed proof sheeting rather than tar paper. Also, before the first layer you should really fork the soil to loosen it up a little.
tar paper is toxic. i hope you didn't eat anything that was grown from that patch of poison.
you should have done a permaculture technique called "sheet mulching" where the first layer is wet cardboard, then wet newspapers, then compost, then chicken manure, then compost, then topsoil.

you should have done a permaculture technique called "sheet mulching" where the first layer is wet cardboard, then wet newspapers, then compost, then chicken manure, then compost, then topsoil.
Wonderful video! I have heard this type of garden also called a lasagna garden, because it is layered like you layer a lasagna. I have never seen it done before. The photos were very helpful. Thanks for the video. I hope it turned out well!
1 - The length of your bed is fine, but the width should only be 4 feet. You should of made two out of what you had. I'm sure you had to walk on your soil to plant and to harvest and weed
2 - Soil is great, but I would have added vermiculte with the peat moss and soil.
Yep I agree, if your going to do that with all those layers you didn't need tar paper the decomposition of those material would have killed the grass on it's own.
Nice video, some of the best memories I have of family are doing gardening together. If you want a natural way to smother the grass you can save your leaves, plus its cheaper. Have you thought of making your garden into a greenhouse? You have mosts of the work done already, just add some hoops over the top and a layer of plastic and you can grow most of the year.
This was a fairly wide bed, are you able to avoid walking on it? Also, next time you do it, rather than tar paper it's better to use something that will decompose over time (thick cardboard, rags, thick layerof newsprint etc) It'll still smother the grass, but will allow your bed to reconnect with the underlying soil.
Great job...wouldn't recomend the tar paper at the bottom though. Tar is from petrochemicals and petrochemicals can cause cancer...apparently that is y texas
is the cancer capital inthe usa. well done on your begie garden
this ai nt a square foot garden looks like a bunch of crap and waste of time if you truely make a square foot gardern then make a video as its being done. try again and do it right.
actually you can dig up the grass and flip it over. lay the box out and start filling , the decomposed grass will add an extra layer of nutrient. if you seal the bottm with tar paper , the soil can't drain and eventually you will loose aeration in the bed, and things will not decompose or even grow as well. I have never heard of actually sealing the bottom with tar paper or anything actually
I think it might have been easier to just dig a garden spot, or have a friendly neighbor with a tiller or plow and a tractor, to come and till/plow up your garden. Looks good though.
Way cute! Great garden! Good for you!

You're using poison paper and bed too wide to get to the middle parts without trampling and compacting your soil.

"tar" in tar paper is asphalt which is loaded with carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). I'd take it out of the ground fast
