i think you could have played the eel over the cartographer. If you pealed a land, you could still play the pledge. If not, then you get the land from cartographer. Either way, the eel will be a 4/4 the next turn. I suppose it depends on whether you really needed to play pledge next turn.

Despite all I just said, playing cartographer is the safer(better) play there.
