I agree that Suikoden 2 has the best plot in the series, even if you hated 3 and 4 you should still play 5. I felt 5 was the 2nd best in the series despite the fact that I couldn't force myself to pay all the way through 3 and 4. 4 wasn't terrible it just wasn't very good, 3 on the other had was pretty terrible. I think 5 though puts more of an emphasis on plot and character like the first 2 and in addition to that has great cutscenes.

Got bored then try to press Start to skip the story telling blah blah blah, but nothing happen Huh? press start again and Huh???????. It is a good game, but plz implement something to skip the story telling parts.
I love the whole suikoden serie (got a DS just for tierkreis and its the one i liked the less). I have been praying for a 6th game for years but i seriously doubt there will ever be one now ...

Suikoden 5 is a tribute to the masterpiece that Suikoden 2 was and judging by the fact we have not seen info on Suikoden 6 since years... i guess, unfortunately, its the finale tribute...
I haven't played this one yet so I can't compare the games but the suikoden II opening is way better than this one and since II is one of my favorite games of all time, I have doubts that this will top it but I am not saying it won't...

suiko 3 has a good gameplay but the storyline is just disappointing. an opposite of that is 4 which has a good storyline but the gameplay is BAD. Suiko 1 nice gameplay and nice storyline(Great moment is when Ted ***). Suiko 5 is like going back at suiko 2 in terms of gameplay but the story Great tear jerking moments just like in 2 specially when Lyon(was *** hehehe). Suiko 2 weeelllll gameplay is good compare to 4 but the storyline was so AWWEESSOME!
I was honestly surprised by this game. I thought it would be terrible because 4 wasnt great, but it was pretty awesome. I also think it was pretty risky to tear away from the Silverbergs (its kinda their thing), but Lucretia was not my least fave tactician. I rly hated Apple in case you were wondering.

@itoumakoto1980 Not only was Suikoden II an amazing game but I actually like the graphics in II better than III. Three's graphics are a bit too...I dunno...happy and care free. It feels like I'm playing Radiata Stories (which was indeed happy and carefree) rather than a highly political, deep game.

@itoumakoto1980 The creators have the series have amazing story telling ability. In V, for example, despite there being so many characters, I feel like most of the characters have memorable personalities. The only other games I can think of with Suikoden's ability to make characters truly come alive are Super Mario RPG (which has a bit of an advantage due to history), the Xenosaga's, Dragon Quest VIII and Radiata Stories. Even the best of games don't have this level of character depth.

if my memory didn't fail me,,,in suiko 3 last battle event, all the available Runes including the True ones were destroyed, and Yuber vanished,,,and what about Pesmerga chasing him down in suiko 2 but not in 3?
why Tierkreis didn't use Runes but Star mark instead? (aside of that being in another world) is Tierkreis's come after the 3rd?

I gotta admit, I didn't give this game a fair chance. Played it for maybe 20 minutes before switching to something else. I played Suikoden 1-4 though and loved them all. I think its about time I gave this game a fair chance.
Have anyone notice that in begining (0:06-0:11) there is a lot of 108 stars? I have noticed Dinn, Dr Silva, Oboro's agency, Moroon, Josephine, Mueller, Jeane etc.
They should ask Miki Higashino to make the soundtrack again like the one in S1 and S2. They should even ask the S1 and S2 director to write the story for the next Suikoden again so it'll stop to disappoint. But that is only my opinion.
I like both the Suikoden series and the Final Fantasy series. I can't compare them as a whole because I've only played a few FFs, but FFX was one of the best games ever on it's own. The Suikoden series is my favorite though. I like that Suikoden is a consistent world and how involving the politics, and rune struggles are.
I actually loved a lot of the innovations in both 3 and 4, especially the trinity sight system in 3. The mini-games in 4 were fun, but it was by far the weakest game.
I don't know if anybody agrees with me on this but I feel that Suikoden has the better Intro vid then practically all the role playing game made so far.

Ooh! Rune of Beginning Soul Eater Bright Shield Black Sword True Fire, Water, Lightning Runes Rune of Punishment Shield Rune True Earth Rune Rune of the Gate And other normal runes. All shown in one scene! Such fanservice, I love it.
For me, I, II an V are just excellent games, way too good. IV was good, had good story, good moments and everything actually, but I didn't get to like it as much as the ones mentioned before. (just personal taste, I suppose). III was not that bad, but kinda forgot about the originality of I and II, luckily, they noticed their mistake on doing those changes, and for Suikoden IV, the usual system was back.
I love this Suikoden. I don't know if I would go far enough to put it over Suikoden II, but they are definitely close (This one has Gizel, but lacks of Luca Blight). The story is great. It has one of my most memorable moments in videogames (to evade spoilers, lets say when the Prince's life changes COMPLETELY), great OST, great characters and the classical suikoden gameplay.
You know when i first played suikoden 1 i love it and when i played i loved it even more then came 3 and i loved it to and 4 well people talked crap about 4 but 4 had a great story and great people and grafic and even sound the only downside to 4 was every 3 steps was a battle and there wasnt anuf to explore
Two was the best one by far imo, along with the first. I wish developers would stop thinking 3d is always the best choice. STICK WITH THE 2d DAMN IT! The game loses its feel, to me anyways, when you toss it into 3d.

You do not have to play the previous games to understand the story. However, all the games take place within the same world but at different historical moments. Depending on which game you play, you might find references to previous plots, but nothing major.
@toalover32 Each Suikoden takes place in the same world but at different times. Suikoden 1 and 2 are the only ones that kind of take place after one another. In fact, you can take your data from 1 when you play 2, the main character appears in 2, and you can use him. Trust me, having McDohl from 1 is worth it.
The intro shows that the prince is fighting Lyon....but in the game play that event never came to be.....wonder why though....if you look carefully the Queen`s and Ferid`s bodies are transparent you can see the background right through them...,so that means Frey is dueling Lyon after his parents are dead and after liberate the Sun Palace...but in the game after you liberate the Sun Palace...,the event never came...gotta really wonder why the event never take place though.....some directors......
Sparring.....?.....thats too brutal and too serious to be a sparring scene....if it is then why are Arshtat and Ferid paid Frey and Lyon a visit......?.....If I`m dead I wouldn`t show up in front of my son just because I want to see them sparring together.....coz that will be stupid and a waste of time by coming back to Frey in my spirit form....so it`s not logical....so like I said...,some directors.......

I agree..still can`t get enough of Suikoden II....huh...?.......oh before I forget...can anyone tell me how DO you do a soft reset to get back to the Title Screen....coz in Suikoden 1,2,3,4 n Tactics u just press the R1,L1,R2,L2,Reset n Start button.....but in 5 nothing happen....I`ve already tried every possible button combo....n I still can`t get to the Title Screen....can anyone help me out here coz theres some mistake I made when I`m trying to recruit n need to reset but I can`t...S.O.S.....
yeah the opening theme in S4 sounded a tad better for my taste but it ultimately comes down to your taste...this is more cheerful and happy sounding whereas in S4 it sounds dark and eerie, more fitting for a game that bases its roots on warfare and bloodshed but i like S5's theme as well and the reason why its the way it sounds is because of the seemingly peaceful and enchanting atmosphere it has about it.
Duuuuuude!!! I couldn't agree more! Me and my cousin said the same thing about it being very very similar to 2. It's kinda hard for me to say between 2 and 5 which is the best though. Two was the first of the series I played though so it's kinda my first love but I'm sorta split between them both. I'm sorry but the series as a whole is the best rpg series I've ever played. I heard that VI is in development but that was almost 3 years ago, although I don't know if it still is. But the site I read on said this "Konami's Suikoden producer Takahiro Sakiyama mentioned that the development of Suikoden VI has already began, the game may have references to a previous Suikoden game." don't know if it's true or not since such a long time has passed.
But I agree, Georg Prime is the fucking man. If there is a 6th installment, I hope he will be in it.
@2ndIgnition georg prime is a beast of a character... i also love that depending on who you had in your party.. you could have different combos.. it was awesome and kept the combat aspect of the game really entertaining
@2ndIgnition Can't disagree more. Genso Suikoden II has a unique soul, and is polished and perfect. Genso Suikoden V is boring, and the anime animations... Ughhh.
I hope there is a 6th game as well there is so much more of the suikoden world to be explored examples including harmonia, the western continent of which nothing is know about, more of the southern continent and there are also events that can be explored such as hamonia's hero war, the succession war which is where barabrossa became emperor of the scarlet moon empire, the formation of the scarlet moon empire and many other things that can be explored could keep the series going

Other than a little slow start the game certainly does take off. It also brings the traditional feeling of Suikoden 1 and 2 for those with nostalgia..while bringing in new elements to keep you hooked.

Suikoden is the best RPG series, but individual games are not all so great. But when you put them altogether as a full set, thats when they really shine. 2 is the best one.
@wcl82783 You're comparing apples and oranges. All of the Suikoden games revolve around the same world, characters and history. Every Final Fantasy game, excluding FFX-2 and FFIX (in terms of references to previous games) has a different flavour, different story, different characters etc. Not only that, but Suikoden is based on Chinese legend, whereas FF is entirely fictional and fantasy. My point is, they are two completely different series.
Suikoden V could be described as the best RPG game in history of RPG gaming. I mean, what game sets you on an adventure to gather strong alliances from foreign places to fight the enemies? It kind of ressembles world war. If I had to rate Suikoden V, I'd give it an 11/10 XD

This was a pretty good comeback from that disaster known as Suikoden IV, it's not up there with Suikoden & Suikoden II (I have not played the 3rd) but if they keep this up...Mebbe
hw can you say that without playing, the character design here is beautiful, look at the artwork online and then tell me, true it looks weird at first glance but if you look carefully you'll see..take georg or the queen for example, personally i prefer suikoden 3 and 4 but this too is great
i have played this game and finished it till the end...it's worth the play...the game and the story is so memorable.. i will never forget this game..i played and finished Final Fantasy 12 too..it's also a very good and hard-to-forget game...these 2 games are very nice.. they are worth your time playing...the background music of the said games are very fantastic...it soothes and manipulates your mood...so nice.. i finished this last summer and i was in a similar position as you, it too saved my summer, going through stormfist with my family was magic. because of this were playing suikoden 3 this summer, my all time favourite game, i have the full artwork hahaha
Suikoden is a definetely a good rpg game not the best though.I can think of much better rpgs (Persona 3&4,Final Fantasy X,Dragon Quest,Xenosaga,Kingdom Hearts 2,etc) but it's definetely in my top 10.Oh and the openings for suikoden 3,4,5 are so-so -_-.
Yeah I agree, the Suikoden series is special in every way and gives you a little of everything...good story, characters, plot, the battles were interesting and epic and cant forget about the music. The world of Suikoden in general was very magical. I still have the first Suikoden and I have all of them as well...its just mystical and inspiring.
LOL me too, i js completed Suikoden V and Suikoden 2, (currently playing 1) and i was devastated when i heard suikoden 3 wasnt in London, all i did was buy the game from online and a swap magic 3, voila, i cn play it on my ps2, i highly reccomend you to do that as its the only way, plus suikoden 3 is worth every second
This is the best series ever. Its a close call between V and II as the best Suikoden game. I still have all the Suikoden games except III as they never released it Europe for some reason.
i replied on a suikoden 4 intro video and after reading this, i have to reply to this also cuz i'm really trying to figure out which of 2 or 5 is my favorite. you should try to DL 3 somehow because it's a very interesting touch to story presentation but it has its critiques. this series is just that damn incredible
Being Irish I always related, from a historical/cultural point of view, with the story of the first Suikoden. Peoples uprising to create a republic. Sort of reminds me of the United Irishmen rebellion of 1798 and the English peasant revolt. As for the overall quality of Suikoden II vs V. I can't make my mind up! I would download Suikoden III if I could but I don't think there is a P.S. 2 emulator up to the job at the moment, although I could be wrong.
the fact that we finally have a leader of royal blood makes me agree. the presentation of the story with his family and the knights = incredible. plus there's actually reason to have him as leader rather than some random kid who just stumbles upon being the next chosen rune bearer luckily (*cough* lazlo *cough*)

One of the best JRPG on the ps2. Suikoden 5 was awesome. I played like 15 hours non stop. Afher 60 hours a beat the game....I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!

if my memory didn't fail me,,,in suiko 3 last battle event, all the available Runes including the True ones were destroyed, and Yuber vanished,,,and what about Pesmerga chasing him down in suiko 2 but not in 3?
why Tierkreis didn't use Runes but Star mark instead? (aside of that being in another world) is Tierkreis's come after the 3rd?
what is the role of Viki?
I hope 6th would answer this and not a "some year before" story

I gotta admit, I didn't give this game a fair chance. Played it for maybe 20 minutes before switching to something else. I played Suikoden 1-4 though and loved them all. I think its about time I gave this game a fair chance.

They should ask Miki Higashino to make the soundtrack again like the one in S1 and S2. They should even ask the S1 and S2 director to write the story for the next Suikoden again so it'll stop to disappoint. But that is only my opinion.

I like both the Suikoden series and the Final Fantasy series. I can't compare them as a whole because I've only played a few FFs, but FFX was one of the best games ever on it's own. The Suikoden series is my favorite though. I like that Suikoden is a consistent world and how involving the politics, and rune struggles are.
I actually loved a lot of the innovations in both 3 and 4, especially the trinity sight system in 3. The mini-games in 4 were fun, but it was by far the weakest game.

For me, I, II an V are just excellent games, way too good. IV was good, had good story, good moments and everything actually, but I didn't get to like it as much as the ones mentioned before. (just personal taste, I suppose). III was not that bad, but kinda forgot about the originality of I and II, luckily, they noticed their mistake on doing those changes, and for Suikoden IV, the usual system was back.

I love this Suikoden. I don't know if I would go far enough to put it over Suikoden II, but they are definitely close (This one has Gizel, but lacks of Luca Blight). The story is great. It has one of my most memorable moments in videogames (to evade spoilers, lets say when the Prince's life changes COMPLETELY), great OST, great characters and the classical suikoden gameplay.

Two was the best one by far imo, along with the first. I wish developers would stop thinking 3d is always the best choice. STICK WITH THE 2d DAMN IT! The game loses its feel, to me anyways, when you toss it into 3d.

You do not have to play the previous games to understand the story. However, all the games take place within the same world but at different historical moments. Depending on which game you play, you might find references to previous plots, but nothing major.

@toalover32 Each Suikoden takes place in the same world but at different times. Suikoden 1 and 2 are the only ones that kind of take place after one another. In fact, you can take your data from 1 when you play 2, the main character appears in 2, and you can use him. Trust me, having McDohl from 1 is worth it.

The intro shows that the prince is fighting Lyon....but in the game play that event never came to be.....wonder why though....if you look carefully the Queen`s and Ferid`s bodies are transparent you can see the background right through them...,so that means Frey is dueling Lyon after his parents are dead and after liberate the Sun Palace...but in the game after you liberate the Sun Palace...,the event never came...gotta really wonder why the event never take place though.....some directors......

Sparring.....?.....thats too brutal and too serious to be a sparring scene....if it is then why are Arshtat and Ferid paid Frey and Lyon a visit......?.....If I`m dead I wouldn`t show up in front of my son just because I want to see them sparring together.....coz that will be stupid and a waste of time by coming back to Frey in my spirit form....so it`s not logical....so like I said...,some directors.......

I agree..still can`t get enough of Suikoden II....huh...?.......oh before I forget...can anyone tell me how DO you do a soft reset to get back to the Title Screen....coz in Suikoden 1,2,3,4 n Tactics u just press the R1,L1,R2,L2,Reset n Start button.....but in 5 nothing happen....I`ve already tried every possible button combo....n I still can`t get to the Title Screen....can anyone help me out here coz theres some mistake I made when I`m trying to recruit n need to reset but I can`t...S.O.S.....

yeah the opening theme in S4 sounded a tad better for my taste but it ultimately comes down to your taste...this is more cheerful and happy sounding whereas in S4 it sounds dark and eerie, more fitting for a game that bases its roots on warfare and bloodshed but i like S5's theme as well and the reason why its the way it sounds is because of the seemingly peaceful and enchanting atmosphere it has about it.

It feels like Suikoden II almost, except everything is polished and perfect. I love Suikoden II almost as much.
I'm a big nostalgia guy, I loved the first games. But this one just nails it.
I hope and pray for a 6th game.

Duuuuuude!!! I couldn't agree more! Me and my cousin said the same thing about it being very very similar to 2. It's kinda hard for me to say between 2 and 5 which is the best though. Two was the first of the series I played though so it's kinda my first love but I'm sorta split between them both. I'm sorry but the series as a whole is the best rpg series I've ever played. Come on 6 please come out!

I heard that VI is in development but that was almost 3 years ago, although I don't know if it still is. But the site I read on said this "Konami's Suikoden producer Takahiro Sakiyama mentioned that the development of Suikoden VI has already began, the game may have references to a previous Suikoden game." don't know if it's true or not since such a long time has passed.
But I agree, Georg Prime is the fucking man. If there is a 6th installment, I hope he will be in it.

I hope there is a 6th game as well there is so much more of the suikoden world to be explored examples including harmonia, the western continent of which nothing is know about, more of the southern continent and there are also events that can be explored such as hamonia's hero war, the succession war which is where barabrossa became emperor of the scarlet moon empire, the formation of the scarlet moon empire and many other things that can be explored could keep the series going

Other than a little slow start the game certainly does take off. It also brings the traditional feeling of Suikoden 1 and 2 for those with nostalgia..while bringing in new elements to keep you hooked.

Suikoden is the best RPG series, but individual games are not all so great. But when you put them altogether as a full set, thats when they really shine. 2 is the best one.

@wcl82783 You're comparing apples and oranges. All of the Suikoden games revolve around the same world, characters and history. Every Final Fantasy game, excluding FFX-2 and FFIX (in terms of references to previous games) has a different flavour, different story, different characters etc. Not only that, but Suikoden is based on Chinese legend, whereas FF is entirely fictional and fantasy. My point is, they are two completely different series.

Suikoden V could be described as the best RPG game in history of RPG gaming. I mean, what game sets you on an adventure to gather strong alliances from foreign places to fight the enemies? It kind of ressembles world war. If I had to rate Suikoden V, I'd give it an 11/10 XD

actually there is one in development... but i hear that it unfortunately might be for wii... and if it goes XBox Exclusive... i might as well kill myself... here's to hoping it's PS3 so i can continue to have faith in konami... besides... once Final Fantasy XIII comes out... which btw is PS3 exclusive... Sony WILL RISE AGAIN.... and then they don't have to worry about not getting the sales they want on a Suikoden VI

hw can you say that without playing, the character design here is beautiful, look at the artwork online and then tell me, true it looks weird at first glance but if you look carefully you'll see..take georg or the queen for example, personally i prefer suikoden 3 and 4 but this too is great

Suikoden is a definetely a good rpg game not the best though.I can think of much better rpgs (Persona 3&4,Final Fantasy X,Dragon Quest,Xenosaga,Kingdom Hearts 2,etc) but it's definetely in my top 10.Oh and the openings for suikoden 3,4,5 are so-so -_-.

The world of Suikoden in general was very magical. I still have the first Suikoden and I have all of them as well...its just mystical and inspiring.

LOL me too, i js completed Suikoden V and Suikoden 2, (currently playing 1) and i was devastated when i heard suikoden 3 wasnt in London, all i did was buy the game from online and a swap magic 3, voila, i cn play it on my ps2, i highly reccomend you to do that as its the only way, plus suikoden 3 is worth every second

Being Irish I always related, from a historical/cultural point of view, with the story of the first Suikoden. Peoples uprising to create a republic. Sort of reminds me of the United Irishmen rebellion of 1798 and the English peasant revolt. As for the overall quality of Suikoden II vs V. I can't make my mind up! I would download Suikoden III if I could but I don't think there is a P.S. 2 emulator up to the job at the moment, although I could be wrong.

Yeah I know. I love all the "Suikoden" games I own all of them "Suikoden", "Suikoden II", "Suikoden III", "Suikoden IV", and "Suikoden V". I really love all the stories. I hope they make a "Suikoden VI".

it wasnt hard as i thougt like example suikoden for ps1 was harder than these U_u there a better one that my friend told and its harder to beat
this game dissapointed me but the story is good though
