@MickeyLove01 : He was a terrific comedian, clean, funny, topical, and a joy to watch. I also had the privilege of working with him and found him to be a really kind and lovable man.
@paddy6062 lighten up my mum used to go out with Arthur Askey he's a legend in his own mind! He represents all that's good about England.... still doesn't make him funny though.
@TheKempley Grow up you retard..they were fighting for for the freedom of england and the world..so just wanted light entertainment not the aggressive shit you dumb kids need to to stimulate your tiny minds today!!
threw radio and the theatre thats how, if it was not for the likes him comedy on the radio would off stayed well in the past, mind you it stop bankers like a certain radio 1 presenter being allowed on the waves
sorry, yes through, and if you watch a flim called "the band wagon" it kinda of explans in away how arthur kept comedy on the radio when the bbc wonted shot off it all together and keep the air waves for public announcements etc etc, its alot more in depth then that but thats the basic outline, hope thats clearer
Wonderful wonderful man. Who's going to replace him? Jonathon Ross? As a generation of people die their ary is going with them: althought Steve Delaney as Count Arthur Strong is somthing to hold onto.
You're right of course. But it's Arthur Askey in the twilight of his carear knocking out the same song he had sung for the last 40 years and still managing to put more energy into it than most modern singers. The man was more a performer than a singer - and IMO a very entertaining one.
Going on the makeup and reference to 'light cells' I guess this is a recreation of an early 'Flying Spot' Televison broadcast, using Bairds mechanical system, possibly around the 1ate 1920's early 1930's..
Askey himself in later years described in later years the process.
this was how things were done 'back in the day'. Arthur Askey entertained millions in my grandparents era.... an era when you could leave your front door unlocked day and night and when people had real respect for each other, not this purile 'respec'! Why dont you spend some time on Google looking at interesting stuff from between the wars (thats world war one and two)instead of playing with your playstation or yourself. And by the way, he died a while back, probably before you were conceived.
Maybe you should do a bit of googling yourself... you mean the good old days 50's and 60s when half of African Americans did not have the right to vote and things like sex crimes and domestic violence were hidden behind closed doors. Or the 2 world wars where millions of people died.. oh those good old days? I think having to lock my door at night is a small sacrifice for gains made elsewhere in humanity.
@jetjaxon You'd have to lock it to prevent being attacked, seriously hurt if you resist, or perhpas being pointlessly murdered by a lowlife who wants to rob you of your possessions in order to fuel his pointlessly drugged-addled existance because there is no hope or future for him in the modern dystopia..
and domestic violence is still as prevalent in society as it ever was, oh.. and don't forget half of the world below the lowest poverty-levels..
Keirfree, your opinion is not important so don't give it (lol). Arthur Askey was a household name, unlike some I am writing to at this moment (lol). Heaven help us all if you ever decide to be horrible (lol).
Almost as boring as some dull no life cyber twat who has nothing better to do with his sorry excuse for a "life" than grumble about stuff on You Tube.
He used to have a tune called " Big hearted Arthur " and was a member of the " Crazy Gang " during WW2. I've seen some of the old films and they wasn't to bad.
Your comment just shows that you shouldnt judge anyone by their appearance. Arthur Askey was a much loved family entertainer throughout his entire life.
Your comment suggests you are a twat but I wont judge you on this one comment alone. Say something else LOL
i wasn't suggesting he was one, but you gotta admit he looks really freaky on this particular clip. An he'd scare most people if he creeped up behind you! Piano mans amazin
I hope you're not on the jury if I'm on trial! Arthur was a top respected comedian, loved by many. He was dressed this way just because of the requirements of the early television filming.
was it your full version on here a little while back? I played it to my nephew & he loved it. I was just about to download it to create an animation for it. Shame if you had to take it down :-(
It's a later remake of the performance he did at the dawn of TV when he appeared on the Baird TV system (mechanical not cathode ray tube). The early system was very weak and everyone had to wear very heavy contrasting make up to be seen on the image broadcast.
I dont think i remember jokers wild, but it does sound pretty rough, but askey on Wheeltappers, you sure as i always thought it was northern comics like Bernard Manning etc and not Big-hearted Arthur.

He was one of the team captains on the painfully awful panel game The Jokers Wild which is up there with Wheeltappers & Shunters in the dreadful telly chart.
You know, I don't recall ever seeing any of Arthur on television, until now, YouTube. I'm UK, all my life, 35 years, yet his name is locked into my memory from as far back as I can remember. Nice to finally see him.
