For ME personally its no competition, Synyster is going for crazy shredding and sweeping (as 70% of these guys) and probably he is not going to be best at it.
Tremonti is different - he decided that phrasing is the most important factor, Solos with a bluesy feel outlining the songs important moments and telling a story, while shredding and other things are kind of additions.

he is fast, he just isn't always fast... thats one of the things that makes him great.. he uses very efficient phrasing with his guitar playing. Fast isn't skill its just speed.
And its easy to tell when hes playing it songs because he does have a little trademark in his playing... he uses heavy legatos and insane alternate picking. How he does it sets him apart from other plays who do the same.... And he has the ability to adapt... he isnt limited to only one style of guitar..

Not many people have the patience to practice the same licks 8 to 10 hours a day consistantly to a metronome, slowly building up the tempo by a few bpm every few weeks. It is a huge amount of hard work and it gets tedious when people throw around comments like yours or that 'playing fast is easy it just takes practice'.

But often I come up with a wicked ass line either in my head or on paper, only to find that there is no economical way of fingering the lick on the fretboard! That's were guys like Holdsworth shine! But that mofo has a 40 ft finger span! Bet his dick must be enormous! Popular w/ the ladies!
Ironically those people that "are so dedicated" to practice getting fast and building technique, miss the fundamentals like chord construction, ear training, and RHYThm playing. All the "star" lead players are great, if not better rhythm players.

You dont spend 8 to 10 hours a day practicing guitar for years and years on a whim and then decide you dont care about the other stuff....if you love music that much and are that dedicated then you go the full distance.

dude every other vid is some teenager shredding sweeps and runs in a non musical way....there is at least ten. I think some of them buy a technique book and practice with a metronome, but they don't have much else to offer.

Marks legato technique is no different to any other shredders, its good. His legato licks are clearly heavily influenced by the likes of Paul Gilbert and Joe Satriani.

I've always been suspicious of Stapp in this Creed reunion to be honest though. He doesn't seem genuine in interviews. It's like he got so desperate for money that he'd do anything, even reunite with Creed, which is a shame cos Mark, Brian and Scott are always genuine in what they do.

Myles actually backs off towards the back of the stage while Mark's doing a solo as if he wants to let Mark shine during the solos. Myles is just such a better frontman than Scott in every way, and AB are so much more genuine and true in their music and what they do. I'm so glad they're gonna be back with a new album and world tour next year.

Alter Bridge clearly aren't shitty commercial radio crap. You can hear that just by listening to their music. Creed's music however is manufactured and average. Their music was overplayed on the radio, and Alter Bridge are hardly ever played on the radio. Creed will never be as good as Alter Bridge, nomatter how big they are.
I personally think Alter Bridge dominates Creed because, even though Creed got more airtime, it wasn't as good as Alter Bridge b/c Scott Stapp wanted to make all the music as opposed to letting Mark do his thing.

There's no "better".
Their styles are different. Tremonti uses more legato, Syn uses a lot of chromatic runs and I absolutely LOVE both styles and both guitar players.
But it isn't a competition - it's about who you like the most.
If anyone cares, I personally prefer Tremonti. But they both kick ass \m/

he is fast, he just isn't always fast... thats one of the things that makes him great.. he uses very efficient phrasing with his guitar playing. Fast isn't skill its just speed.
And its easy to tell when hes playing it songs because he does have a little trademark in his playing... he uses heavy legatos and insane alternate picking. How he does it sets him apart from other plays who do the same.... And he has the ability to adapt... he isnt limited to only one style of guitar..

'Fast isn't skill its just speed.' Ridiculous statement, speed takes skill and a hell of alot of dedication. Not many people have the patience to practice the same licks 8 to 10 hours a day consistantly to a metronome, slowly building up the tempo by a few bpm every few weeks. It is a huge amount of hard work and it gets tedious when people throw around comments like yours or that 'playing fast is easy it just takes practice'.

One of the things that's so fucking frustrating about playing the guitar is fingering! I mean there are some evil ass lines that sax players, keyboard players and etc can lay down! But often I come up with a wicked ass line either in my head or on paper, only to find that there is no economical way of fingering the lick on the fretboard! That's were guys like Holdsworth shine! But that mofo has a 40 ft finger span! Bet his dick must be enormous! Popular w/ the ladies!

Ironically those people that "are so dedicated" to practice getting fast and building technique, miss the fundamentals like chord construction, ear training, and RHYThm playing. All the "star" lead players are great, if not better rhythm players.

I disagree strongly, the kind of person that is neurotic enough to spend that much time to get better at their instrument is not the kind of person to then slack up on the other aspects..
There is this myth people throw around of guitarists who can only play fast and are incapeable of playing with 'feel' which is total nonsnse. The only guy I have seen who fits that description is Francesco Farreri and he is a joke amoungst the guitar community anyway. All of the best shredders know their

theory back to front. You may not like their music but they are very accomplished players. Guys like Shawn Lane, Rusty Cooley, Petrruci, Malmsteen, Vai, Angelo Batio, Buckethead, Vai Chris Amott etc are outstanding across the board. You dont spend 8 to 10 hours a day practicing guitar for years and years on a whim and then decide you dont care about the other stuff....if you love music that much and are that dedicated then you go the full distance.

common then I challenge you to produce 10 professional guitarists who can only play fast and have none of the fundamentals down.... You may not like the music they play because complex stuff is too much for you to get your head around but that does not mean they cannot play a simple chord progression or improvise in any key they desire. Listen to some shawn lane (widely regarded as the fastest shredder) then get back to me..the guy can do anything in just about any style.

dude every other vid is some teenager shredding sweeps and runs in a non musical way....there is at least ten. I think some of them buy a technique book and practice with a metronome, but they don't have much else to offer.

Youtube videos are not professional guitarists 99% of those who try and shred on youtube are attrocious at it, they have not practiced hard enough. The ones who actually can do it (highintel, guthrie govan etc) however are proficient at the other aspects too.
How on earth can you judge someones knowledge of theory, ear training etc from watching them play covers on youtube? That is ridiculous. Im still waiting for that list, if this is as common as you say then it should be very easy

Check out Guthrie Govan and Highintel (2 of the best shredders on youtube) just try and say they lack the fundamentals. I dont think you have a clue what you are talking about.

whatever dude. I talk to Highintel and am aware of how brilliant he is as well as Govan. The point I was making there are endless "bedroom" shredders on here. Some are well rounded and some (MORE THAN 10!) do nothing be work on speed and technique, thus ignoring practical skills

The point I am making is that those who put in the time required to shred properly (properly being the key there, most 'shredders' on youtube are attrocious) are not the sort to then leave ignore other aspects of music. You dont put in the 8/10 hours a day required to get that good on a whim....
I dont see how you can judge someones knowledge of theory and such from watching them do covers on youtube..

Then please by all means point them out to me. There are armies of kids on youtube trying to shred who are terrible and thus are poor at all the other aspects of playing too but those who have put in the time to actually be good are good across the board. As I said earlier, you dont put in 8/10 hours a day of practice on a whim...That is an absurd suggestion.

self discipline and love of music to get good technique. Im also not sure what you mean by 'heavy legatos'...you dont really get light or heavy legato, its just legato. Marks legato technique is no different to any other shredders, its good. His legato licks are clearly heavily influenced by the likes of Paul Gilbert and Joe Satriani.
'Heavy legatos' and 'insane alternate' picking is hardly a trademark...
He is a great guitarist though no question.

People dissing Creed...I saw them the first show of their reunion tour a few weeks ago...it was amazing.
Creed and Alterbridge are the two best bands in the whole wide world, don't diss either one of them.

Wow, are you kidding me? He hasn't changed at all then! According to Mark, Brian and Scott, Stapp has "changed" drastically and his approach is really different. I've always been suspicious of Stapp in this Creed reunion to be honest though. He doesn't seem genuine in interviews. It's like he got so desperate for money that he'd do anything, even reunite with Creed, which is a shame cos Mark, Brian and Scott are always genuine in what they do.

God, why does he do that?? You'd think he was jealous of Mark or something! lol. That's the complete opposite to what Myles does. Myles actually backs off towards the back of the stage while Mark's doing a solo as if he wants to let Mark shine during the solos. Myles is just such a better frontman than Scott in every way, and AB are so much more genuine and true in their music and what they do. I'm so glad they're gonna be back with a new album and world tour next year.

Alter Bridge clearly aren't shitty commercial radio crap. You can hear that just by listening to their music. Creed's music however is manufactured and average. Their music was overplayed on the radio, and Alter Bridge are hardly ever played on the radio. Creed will never be as good as Alter Bridge, nomatter how big they are.

I personally think Alter Bridge dominates Creed because, even though Creed got more airtime, it wasn't as good as Alter Bridge b/c Scott Stapp wanted to make all the music as opposed to letting Mark do his thing.
