I 1st heard of them on WYNG, Radio 1300 in Goldsboro, NC about 1973. Small top 40 AM station, but did some good documenteries occasionally. BP was mentioned & they played a cut from an album. That was only time I heard of them. Only others I knew who knew of them were a few musicians in local bands. On Youtube is 1st I've been able to hear them again. Great band.

Good morning, do you like sixties? Listen and pod cast my program " great sound of 60' s " on the site plumfm. Greeting and made blooper in rock and roll. Salut, vous aimez les sixties ? Ecoutez et podcatez mon émission "le super son des sixties" sur plum fm. Salut et faites gaffe au rock'n roll
In '68 I was a sophmore in HS and used to let this record usher me to sleep every night. I was in a cover band and we did "Steve's Song" in our set list. This music sounds totally contemporary, and I don't think that's just because it was from "my generation." I've not heard anything modern that is as fresh-sounding and innovative as this is.
So many nights were spent "projecting" to this song. Memories of Winterland in the early days when the floor was only partially full with hardly anyone in the balcony seating.
I was with my dad, I was around 12, and we sat down to watch a band at Palisades Park, NJ and it was the Blues Project. My dad said, "wow that guy with the curly hair is great". It was the first band I had ever seen live, that I was old enough to remember. It's stuck with me forever. My dad was the coolest.
Great to hear this again! In the mid 70s, I lived in the same building as Danny Kalb. We used to play our acoustic guitars together and just jam out . Great memories!
Yeah the kind of song even your mom would like. Sort of Arthur Lee and Love's Orange Skies. Pretty but not too. Cool but not cold. I can't think of too many jazz songs as good as this .. just Coltrane's My Favorite Things which blew me away and I thought I might finally like other jazz but I am rigidly tied to a rock of rock and pop. Great album cover and esp. pic of Al Kooper who looks like he is floating on the wind..
Great structuring, great pacing, great arrangement, surprisingly solid for a young blues rock band of that time playing an extended instrumental piece -- I don't think the Stones, the Beatles or Clapton could have pulled this off. GREAT guitar solo by Danny Kalb in his prime. Thanks for posting this! I'd love to hear their version of Alberta (from Live at the Cafe A Go Go).
I consider the Blues Project to be one of the six primary precursors of the psychedelic sound, the others being the Mystery Trend, the Charlatans, the Shadows of Knight, the Standels, and the Seeds... apart from the Byrds, Yardbirds and Beatles of course... did I leave anyone else out?
I remember this album fondly. And after forty plus years, it still hasn't lost its luster. I've often felt that " The Blues project " were the originators of jazz/rock fusion . It took another ten years before any other band even entertained the idea. I head is off to these gentlemen!
I suggest to you to listen to a British Jazz-Rock group formed in 1970 by the name of " IF ". Very good fusion music. You will find them on the net. Search for Dick Morrissey ( leader of the band ) and you will find a great video plus some great audio too !
@plastiqueadapte If was another grossly underrated and thoroughly ignored fantastic band. The sounds they put together are still amazing and vetter than anything I've heard over the past 10 years.
Good memories here...Loved the B.P. precursor to B.S.& T. & more...by the way...pic on LP cover taken on Haight St. @ Masonic, S.F. (I was there)...do remember that much...1966...just before the Summer of Love..
If y'all dig this, be sure to check out "Super Sessioni" with Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield. It's not all killer and no filler, but it's worth a listen.
You can really see the remnants of the Blues project in both Blood sweat and Tears and Seatrain. The al Kooper/Steve Katz influence is definitley there...
I went there a couple of times. Saw Blood Sweat and Tears thee just before they broke nationally. those were the days. And Leo's Casino was just down the street for the motown fans.
my opinion plus two dollars will buy a small coffee these days!) but that being said, I have this album...and love these guys...saw them in concert at Rutgers back when air was clean and **x was dirty! If anyone can post the original album cut (not this album)...not the live concert version... of Alberta...please do so...if you do I'll have to love you forever! Thanks!!!!
Alot of Rappers use samples from older tracks. Instead of looking at it has "Stealing". I see it rather has a compliment saying that an older track can be used to Enhance their own. That itself acknowledges the track has good.
I first heard of the Blues Project probably in '66 when they appeared on a NY late night TV VHF syndicated show with outspoken live host like Joe Pyne, or someone like him...I somehow found the album & played it all the time....could you download the opening track, "I Can't Keep From Cryin'?" Great memories, thanks!

@xtremenortherner exactly why i listen to "deep tracks" on xm radio. try it if you haven't already. you can hear all that you just listed, including this song. commercial radio is horrible!
Al Kooper celebrated his 65th birthday on Feb 5 at BB Kings in NYC with Danny Kalb at his side. They paid tribute to their late bandmate Andy Kuhlberg with a powerful rendition of "Flute Thing". Al and Jimmy Vivinno delivered "Like a Rolling Stone" in true Dylan style, and Danny got bluesy on "Alberta" and had everyone's feet tappin' with "You Can't Catch Me".
Happy Birthday Al. We miss you Andy. Long Live the Blues Project!

Great track from 66. Rappers may sample or steal tracks like this to sample because they have no real musical talent. these guys do!

most people think sampling is "STEALING"...
most people don't know the definition of a "ROYALY PAYMENT" either...
however i love the bboy track, but i dont think the boys did it better then the B.P...
but thats the thing, there 2 totally dif. things. apples and oranges son.
to understand sampling you have to appreciate it. to fully appreciate it you gotta try it.. untill then, your clueless.
you probably dont even know any good rap anyways. so---- how have you come to that conclusion....psssh

Another great band from the late 60's-early 70's that commercial radio still ignores!?Like Seatrain,Quicksilver,Spirit,
pre-1975 Fleetwood Mac, and about 99% of the Grateful Dead's output!
But merely the fact that these bands are being posted all over the web;
#1) Shows popular demand is much more sophisticated than what the mega-media corporations believe with their "Mac-Rock" being broadcasted;and
#2) True artistry/talent always survives the test of time!
