  • The title implies that "striking with brute strength" was used at least in some kinds of swordsmanship. This is completely wrong. No bladed weapon ever was used as a chopping tool, let alone european swords. You always need technique and skill to cut, even with a machete. Any edged weapon has to be capable of "draw cuts".

The notion that some swords (knightly swords for ex.) do not cut but chop and smash their way through targets is highly uninformed, coming from Hollywood and Renn Fairs.

  • @Protherium Hi. The point here only referes to this sword style,' But hopefully shows that even a slight deviation from the correct technique even with extra strength does not have the same effect and is likley to result in failiur.

We should improve technique rather than concentrating on putting strength into our practice.

Cutting, stabbing or even striking? Must depend on the situation.

  • I need to try Mae next time I do battogiri

  • Interesting video - I suppose that many lessons can be learned from this.

  • .Great video, loved the seated demo ;-)

The bottle strike was very interesting.

    Cheers

  • Nice video and good comments made. I wish you both a large enhancement of your Iai.

  • Thank you.

  • One other note I must make about cutting plastic bottles. With the right technique it is possible that one can leave the bottle bottom undisturbed or at least still standing after the cut.

Again , nice job on that demonstration.

  • Thanks Wizz. Good point.

Adding to that, sharpness, blade geometry, thickness, section and curvature have varying resistance on diffferent targets.

It also helps if you stand the target on a broader base

  • Also, trying to understand all these variables in conjunction with our own technical ability raises Tameshigiri above being just a cutting exercise and enhances our Iai.

    Thanks again.

  • Good points for sure. I have had all of those factors with the edge angle off just a little and still turned bottles into baseballs ^_^

    Cheers

  • Very nicely done and demonstrated.
