  • Damn.. Russians were good back then. Too bad they suck now

  • Hey Hanksnow, this is 1987. Hooking was allowed. Lots of things were allowed that you can't do anymore, Get real

  • hanksnow2 is a fucking idiot

  • @ 5:50 you can see Howerchuck hook the Russian player who would have had Lemieux, but that was only one of many non calls from Homer Refs!

  • On most of the Canadian goals, I only see 4 Russians, must be all PP goals.

  • 3:25 Lemieux's back is clearly killing him...

  • 2:44 also an obvious penalty leading directly to a soviet goal...

  • grant fuhr was awful in this game

  • I'm Canadian and glad we won, but at 5:49, that definitely was a hooking or interference penalty!

  • Not sure how people can think there was favourtism when there was at least 1 goal from the Russians that was on a hook to Bourque! Bah, whatever. Two great teams battled.

  • Hehe everybody knows that the russian was the best and this series was coloured by canadian faouvourism...Referee, little rinc and so on.... Nice Match series and exciting but the russian was the best in ice hockey until 1990.

  • It's games like this that make me proud to be Canadian! Talent, heart, and toughness! All hallmarks of Canadian hockey. Not saying people of other nations don't have it as well, but that never say die attitude when the chips are down is something we Canucks are born with I think.

  • @SuperStrik9 - Just sounds like the trash the commentators spew out, especially during Can. Russia games. None of these great come backs are possible from teams with less talent, unless, of course the officials are with Can. Just look at 3:10, & there are lots of 3:10's not called, which gives the impression that Can. is miraculous.

I have watched these 6 or 7 of these vids & can see that we get away with murder.

I'm sure, before the game the Ref says to Can., "Don't forget, I'm Canadian too"

  • Wow ! Goosebumps. I remember watching this when I was 13 years old and being on the edge of my seat the whole time! What blows me away is how much clutching a nd grabbing/interference WASNT called back then. Virtually every goal had a potential penalty(in todays NHL) on the play, and this was still the most entertaining hockey I'ver ever seen in spite of that! Kinda makes you wonder.

  • I wil take the Canada Cup over the Olympics anyday...What a great era for hockey.

  • Full body goose bumps. Every time. I was 10 years old and grew up in Edmonton. This was the best hockey ever played hands down.

  • how the colour commentator blames that initial goal on crossman is beyond me, i guess in 1987 it was tough to be critical of wayne

  • У нас в дворовом хоккее за такое судейство ебало разбивали

  • GREAT PLAYERS FROM GREAT TEAMS,iN THE END IT WAS 5-6,6-5,6-5 VERY CLOSE AND ALL GAMES PLAYE IN CANADA,SO....SERGEY MAKAROV WAS MY FAVORITE PLAYER,AND FROM CANADA TEAM WANE GRTETZKY,PAUL COFFEY AND MARIO

  • Listen Guys, interesting debate. :) Everybody has excuses when their team fails and everybody celebrates when their team wins..history blah blah blah. Canada and Russia, both great teams...and Gretzky said it best years and years ago! We've reached a competitive balance. We can't bury them and they can't bury us! On any given day one team can beat the other. ) So ended the debate.

  • I'm from Moscow, and I was 12 back in '87. This finals were the greatest hockey I've ever seen, in spite of Canada win. Lineup of greatest players from both sides. And the day after, when we came out on the playground to play in "Makarov-Semak-Gusarov- Coffey-Lemieux-Gretzky-etc." we felt that yesterday something happened, that will never be repeated. We were overwhelmed with emotions. Thanks for reminding me of these days.

  • @jusgfh

I agree, that was the best hockey I have ever seen. The broadcast was buried on some far out chanal and when the final game went ot the chanal went off the air briefly. When it returned the game just ended. Stupid Americans.

  • so good, so nice

  • was there ever a collection of greater players (on both sides) to play a series? canada had some of the greatest NHL players of all time time; USSR had some the greatest international players of all time. im not canadian, but im a hockey fan, and I think that last goal is the greatest goal I have ever seen given the moment, the players on the ice(both sides), comeback from 3-0, GW Lemieux/Gretz. was there a better series? EDM v. NYI?

  • @rwoods2k flyers came back against the bruins in 2010 playoffs trailing 3-0

  • Probably the strongest Canadian team ever. Too bad we couldn't have sent that team to the Olympics.

  • "he shoots he scores mario lemieux" best call ever

  • goaltending was horrible back then

  • Two amazing teams, three amazing games. The players had more respect for each other than most of you commenting, including the poster of this video.

Funny, the Soviets themselves requested Don Koharski to officiate games 1 and 3.

  • two greatest team in the world ever

  • After the Soviet fourth goal, the slash made by the Canadian player isn't any different from what Chris Simon did to Hollweg or McSorley did to Brashear... outch and shame for that cheap shot!

  • Great!

  • It's a little sad to see on the replay that Canadians should have a crystal clear hooking in the middlezone before the 6-5-goal.

  • @BillyBoysing

But then again, Bourque was clearly hooked on the soviets 3rd goal. This is how games were reffed back in the days.

  • That one Russian goal where they hauled down 77 should have been hooking easy

  • out of all the three most famous winning goals for Canada, this one is the best, as good as Crosbys was, this was the best.

  • @zeldafreak71 no way. you obviously dont know the story behind the 1972 paul henderson goal. paul henderson gave canada hockey. lemiuex and crosby just reafferminded it

  • I'm still mad that the officials didn't give Koharski an assist on the 6th Canadian goal! In all seriousness, though, I wish Svetlov hadn't been injured in the semi-final against Sweden. He was really playing well and would have definitely been an asset for the Soviets in the final round.

  • Hearing Dan Kelly's call on Mario Lemieux's Goal from Wayne Gretzky still brings tears to my Eyes today!

  • Great teams. Great Hockey.

  • Team Canada power occasionally iced a power play unit in in that tournament was, to put it mildly, quite talented: Gretzky, Lemieux and Messier up front, and Coffey and Bourque on the blue line. Probably the best five-man unit ever to play together.

  • The drone the organ guy plays after each Soviet goal is perfect.

  • no team in the history of hockey could have beaten this team Canada

  • @infinitidal

    Don't be funny...

They barely won on home ice, with home rules, and a helping referee.

  • @unnamed00 ...nobody buys that whole argument ... it just makes Russians look like poor losers ..... you would get more respect if you viewed things a little more realistically ...

  • @infinitidal

I am viewing this more realistically, but you don't want to.

  • How many Hockey Olympic Gold's have the Russians won since 98? When all the pro's were going at it?

  • Russia did not win much of anything until recently, so it is not about pros in the Olympics.

It has always been professionals in the Olympics; only NHLers were not allowed until 98.

  • Goodness I watched the whole series and if anything the refs were pretty fair and could have called a lot the other way as well. Canada won, had spent a lot less time together as a team and were superior in talent. In fact, this is the most talented hockey team along with the 84 Canadian team of all time. Gretzky and Lemieux were in fact what gave Canada the edge.

  • There were other factors that "gave the edge"...

Superior talent? You mean talent like hooking, holding, crosschecking, diving?

The refs are always fair... as long as they don't hurt your team...

  • @unnamed00 I didn't try to post a url on here, I only did that on your profile. And you only block people because you don't like hearing what you know is the truth. So frankly, buddy, the internet is not the place for you. Blocking someone is the internet quivalent of acting like a child, plugging your ears and going "na na na can't hear you." You're pathetic, cream puff.

  • Truth from you? Funny...

Acting like a child is what you have been doing. That is why you are blocked. I have no time to babysit you here...

  • Everyone on here, grow the fuck up. Canada and Russia have won all major compositions almost exactly even number of times. Im pro Soviet and I have lived in Canada for much of my life, Soviets, Stop bitching Canadians are AMAZING at hockey. Canadians, Stop bitching Soviets and Canada were the only two counties to even make it to the finals every year. Get over it

  • @Potts132

So... who do you cheer for in hockey?

  • @sweetness848 If is Canada in the finals, Canada, Soviet Union/Russia, Russia if they play each other I win no matter what

  • @Potts132 That's cool... what'd you think of Russia's performance at the Olympics this year? Do you think they'll rebound in Sochi if the NHL decides to go in 2014?

That gold medal for Canada was sweet this year. Everybody remembers where they were.

  • @sweetness848 I was disappointed but not surprised. This year Russia had a rather young inexperienced team. They relied to much on Ovechkin. Canada did not rely on Crosby and he did bad in the tourney so they did the right thing. Next Olympics the Russian team will be much more prepared an experienced. Should be much better

  • @Potts132 didnt the Russians get relegated and so wont appear in next Olympics?KHL and NHL should have a champions leagues series or for one season an NHL team plays in KHL and Khl club plays in AHL where they are used as a farm team for an NHL club.Would be good.

  • @2tuque2 I do believe that has happened before. I could be wrong

  • @Potts132

No Way. Canada Cup was won more by Canada. The CAnada Cup is what determines who is the best in hockey. The best vs the best with some group games and training camps. Canada only lost twice.

  • @babystinky Im talking World Juniors, International play and the Olympics. You know the stuff that matters

  • @Potts132

The stuff that matters is the tournament that has the best against the best. In the Olympics since the "PRO's" Started going beginning in 98, we are the only team to repeat. IN 02 and in 2010. The trend continues. If we send our pro's we will win. The Canada Cup was the ultimate test since all the world had time to put their best against the best of Canada.

  • @babystinky The USSR won the Canada cup and one of the Summit series. Both of those had all the time to bring our best players together

  • @Potts132 ... there was only ONE summit series ... Canada won ..... there were several Canada Cups ... the USSR only won once ... Canada won the rest ... a little hockey history lesson for you... google could perhaps enlighten you as well ....

  • @infinitidal I'm Canadian, And winning on home ice is not impressive. Even our Olympics where refereed bad. I also lived in Russia for a spell. And we yes I am aware of that it was a typo, you could be more percent, we won it 4-1-3 despite the USSR scoring more gaols then us. And in International competitions us and USSR destroyed us, and Russia has done fairly well. Patriotism blinds the best of us

  • @Potts132 ... that is quite preposterous to say that winning on home ice is not impressive ... winning at any time is impressive. Are you saying any time Russia wins on home ice it is not impressive? ... and there's no blindness involved ... at least from this end .... i think you are more Russian than your claim to be Canadian. In actual fact ... in BEST on BEST competition, the USSR RARELY beat team Canada. All you have to do is look it up. Every knowledgeable hockey fan knows this.

  • @infinitidal No they are not, home reffs are terrible. In a Best on. I'm more Canadian then Russian, I just hate patriotism and putting down other people. I have played since I was 4, and watched since then also. In a best on best Canada and Russia are very equal. Which contradicts your last point, when did I say Russian's were better???

  • @Potts132 that's true potts ...you didn't actually say Russia was better ... what you said was 'in International competitions us and USSR destroyed us (Canada). anyways ... i think Russia is great, their hockey players are great, and its not blind patriotism to say factually that best on best Canada has a vastly better record vs Russia. its history, not patriotism.

  • So you think you know the "best on best" record?

Russia has not done well since 1991 but its "best on best" record against Canada is still 1-1.

The USSR was also about even with Canada in these kind of games, even though most of them were played in favorable circumstances for Canada.

And the USSR did destroy Canada in international competitions many times, not only in the WCs in Europe but in North America too (79, 81).

  • @unnamed00 perhaps you are unfamiliar with Canadian/NHL hockey ... but, Canada NEVER sends its best players to the World Championships ... for one thing the NHL playoffs are just getting started so 16 of the 30 teams players are unavailable ... second, most Canadian players don't take the WC seriously and rarely attend when they are available ..... haven't you noticed that our Canada Cup team rosters and Olympic team rosters are NOT the same as Canada's WC teams??

  • Again the same excuses.

You don't know how good some of those Canadian WC teams have been.

The Soviets did not send all of their best players to all to the Canada Cups also, so that makes those Canada Cups meaningless too?

  • @unnamed00 Canadian teams are ALWAYS good. No question. Just not our best.... and yes, if the SOviets didn't send their best to Canada Cups (which of course they did) then it isn't 'best on best' now is it....

  • Again look at the WC rosters of some of those Canadian teams in the 80's; many of Canada's best were there.

So you are claiming that the Soviets sent their best team in 76 and 91 without even knowing their rosters?

  • @Potts132 ... i might add that i appreciate that this hasn't turned into ugly name calling contest. i appreciate that people have differing opinions and preferences. cheers potts.

  • @infinitidal Same to you, normally by now it not a debate with other people its just name calling. But if you look at Olympic records which are best on best we are now ahead by 1 gold medal in the race. And at the world juniors we are tied for most golds. And those are the two most important tournament (to Canadians anyways)

  • @Potts132 yes no need for name calling .. i totally agree! back to the debate ... you can't be very familiar with Canadian hockey to suggest that the Olympics are best on best, at least untill very recently (98?) when NHL players were allowed to play. the top 1000 players from Canada were playing in the NHL. AHL etc so were pros and not allowed to represent Canada in the Olympics.

  • @Potts132 The Soviet record is a bit of a joke. They were a great team no doubt, but they were NEVER tested against real competition. Now that they are playing by the same rules as Canada ...ie- NO preparation time, NOT playing YEAR ROUND together as a team etc, the Russians just can't win a big BEST on BEST championship when they play by the same rules as Canada. THis is how ALL Canadians see the state of international hockey.

  • That is a very dumb point of view...

So all the times they embarrassed Canada's best, they still were not tested?

The team did not train year round silly... That is just a common Canadian excuse.

The problems with modern Russian hockey go far beyond preparation and training time.

What really is a joke is Canada's Canada Cup record... That is where Canada was not playing by the same rules as other teams.

  • @unnamed00 Team Russia trained YEAR ROUND! that is a fact... the rest just sounds like sour grapes to me ....

  • Yes year round, 24/7...

That is not a fact but a myth. You seem to have the two words confused...

  • @unnamed00 Excuse? since when do we need an excuse? check how we win more than you... and the old russia teams did train together unlike ours. We still won so its not an excuse, you need an excuse when you lose...kinda like how you said team canada got breaks from the refs...thats a good excuse...

  • Canada did get "breaks". There was a lot said about this in the comments before, so read them and watch my other video about this.

Canada won more? Well it all depends on how and what you count...

  • @unnamed00 oh, and the Canada Cup happened 5 times and Canada won 4 of them...so what's the joke?

  • Why you only count the Canada Cup?

Canada could win a tournament where everything was done so that Canada wins... so what?

  • @infinitidal You know every single Canadian? I bet, Unnamed00 said what I was gonna say anyways

  • .... let me rephrase that as ... every knowledgeable Canadian

  • Rarely beat Canada?? Well look it up yourself...

  • @Potts132 Russians have every right to be proud of their rich hockey history, but you just look foolish if you start making preposterous claims of superiority.

  • There was the 1974 summit series...

There were also a lot of World Championships, which Canada did not win for decades until the USSR broke up...

  • @unnamed00 the 74 thing was against WHA players ...NOT NHL Canadian players. BIG difference in talent for Canada.... and i think we both know the WOrld CHampionships are NEVER best on best ... How many times have you seen Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier, Crosby etc etc etc in a WOrld Championships???? Perhaps you aren't familiar with Canada's best players to know who's who. YOu just see a Canadian sweater and think they represent the best?

  • I know more about Canada's WC teams than you...

Gretzky, Lemieux, Messier, and other top players played in some WCs.

Also, you can't just dismiss that 74 WHA team as vastly inferior.

  • @unnamed00 .... not likely ... and YES YOU CAN dismiss the level of WHA talent versus that of the NHL. You may not have heard but the WHA doesn't even exist anymore, and very few of those players ended up playing in the NHL.

  • Shows how much you know.

Care to take a look at the roster of that WHA team.

You don't know much of what you are talking about...

  • Not all teams had their best in the Canada Cup all the time, but I should not have expected you to know that.

  • @Potts132 Actually Czeckoslovakia was in the 76 Final against Canada... they lost 2 games to zero but second game went to overtime where Darryl Sittler scored the winner...but your point is well taken...USSR and Canada were miles or should i say kilometres ahead of the the rest of the world......now there's 6 or 7 countries with top notch players!

  • @quincee33 The Kilometers joke made me laugh haha. But thank you, I just hate the arguing, for 50 some years the Soviet's won people just got to get over it. Not Canada win's all the time and we accept it. Glad to see a smart person on Youtube (:

  • @Potts132 The Soviets were a bunch of bitches for not letting "Pro" players play in international competitions. Meanwhile their red army team was allowed. How was that fair? Canada won 6 of 7 golds at the olympics until 56'. The golds switch to USSR after that because our best players weren't allowed to play anymore. Now the Gold is back in our hands though. THAT is why I say fuck the soviets and their cheating ways.

  • @jeroliver Red my comment again, stop bitching you lost for a little while. Get the fuck over it stop living in the 60's the cold war is over for fuck sakes.

You give a bad name to Canadians, at least us cheating Soviets can grow up not complain about that past

  • @Potts132 If red-army players had been banned from playing international tournaments during those years the USSR would have ZERO gold medals in hockey. Canada would have almost all of them. They cheated by voting to ban pro hockey players (i.e. CANADIANS). It was the only way they could win. So big fucking deal, they barely beat some Canadian amateur teams a few times. All those golds the Russians have need an asterisk beside them.

Now look at them. Disgraced. Even Putin is embarrassed by them.

  • @jeroliver Just saying, you do realize the Team "Red Army" is just there nickname correct?

Again, grow up, you lost. The USSR beat you at hockey its not a big deal.

Soviets are different then Russian, who care about Putin? Putin's a prick

  • @Potts132 canada and russia/soviet or whatever else the fuck you wanna call it are pretty even in numbers except canada wins at all of them bitch

  • @mrkillerbeast100 No the Soviet's have about 7-% of the Gold medals from 52 to 91. The numbers are no were near even.

Canada wins them all, other then when they have a 3-0 period it seems. But again I say grow up you got beat for a while, and we we not douches about it. Your the best now, the difference? You can't win like real men

  • @Potts132 go look at the 87 series, russia was up 3-0 but still lost so it looks like it goes both ways

  • @mrkillerbeast100 Exactly, so shut up about it they were the best then your the best now stop making excuses and accept that

  • @Potts132 your right except for the fact that russia was actually good

  • @mrkillerbeast100 The Soviet's were astounding at hockey. Now you rose up in the 90's and have now taken over

  • @Potts132 canada won the first gold medal and then two more in a row plus the 72 series. we have always dominated and now we just destroy

  • @mrkillerbeast100 Nope. Soviets had 19/32 Golds in International play. 7/9 in Olympic play, Soviets had nearly %70 of all Gold medals in tournaments they competed in. And had a record with 85% wins (Done by math don't want to write out ALL their records).

  • @Potts132 idk where your getting that info but check it again

and who won this game you fucking dumbass canada just like all the opther hockey you fuck

do i need to link you a site that shows all of the gold medals? fucking russians

  • @mrkillerbeast100 Yes Canada won this game. That would be part of the 20-30% that they lost. And yes I would love a link to compare Soviet Golds to Canadians golds.

Yes in the Olympics, not in ALL international play, which the Soviets still dominated. I am not saying Canada is bad at hockey, I'm saying you were not the best for a while. If you really can't grow up and accept that theres no point talking

  • @Potts132 also canadas nhl players werent allowed to compete in the olympics until recently but the russians had there best players. so canada put a team together with players that didnt get in the nhl and faced russia with there best players

not to mention that russias population is a few times greater then canadas 30 odd million

  • @mrkillerbeast100 To that last sentence, you have less population, but more of that population plays hockey. I have no idea what percent, but one thing I do know is you have the most female hockey players in the world, compared to every other country in the world. So the amount of men that play I'm going to say is greater then women, though thats not the most in the world to say its a huge difference in the amount of hockey players is pretty stupid.

  • @Potts132 who won the fucking game of this video? canada and your a dumbass as soon as nhl players were allowed in the nhl russia has done shit

  • @mrkillerbeast100 Who won this game is irrelevant, Russia beat you in the world juniors this year. Does it mean they are better? Hell no. You are so caught up in seeing the Soviet's lose once that you base your whole argument around it. The ban on NHL players was lifted before the Soviet Union collapsed, they won gold in the last games they played in, Canadian pro's aloud. Time to grow up

  • @Potts132 all im saying is that overall canada has more gold medals in the olympics and junoirs then any other country and russia or the ussr have never won 5 gold in a row twice

  • @mrkillerbeast100 Well not a fair measure. You have been in the Olympics since 1926, the CCCP was in it since 56 and Russia came in around 1992. So to compare Medals, you got a big head start.

And the CCCP did twice, From 63-71 (missing 64, 68) they won gold in the WC 7 times in a row.And again in 78 to 83(missing 80) they won five in a row.

  • @Potts132 ok first of all if you miss a year then its not in a row.

second of all just look at the players that canada has had since they created the game in montreal there is no compartison whatsoever. and as i said before add all of your russian ussr and whatever else up and canada still has more gold medals so stfu you russian fail

  • @mrkillerbeast100 The years they missed were because they did not play.

All the Soviet Union medals from 54 to 1991 to Canada same time span? I'll do it right now. Not including the Olympics because you will complain about that, in WC tournaments. Canada from 54 to 91 had 4 gold medals. The USSR had 19. Looking at records Soviets had a 8% loss ratio and Canada has a 14% loss ratio.

Despite me proving my point, you will argue it, so I am done here. Good day

  • @Potts132 ya i will argue it because again the canadain nhl player couldnt play because the nhl did not take a break and your little fail of a russian legue did so again canada wins at hockey

    bitch

  • @mrkillerbeast100 Haha alright anything you say man

  • @Potts132 yeah you faggot

  • @mrkillerbeast100 Some Canadian you are, we support gay marriage not bash it. Not to mention we ALSO support grammar, we don't bash that either.

How have you not made it through a free education system? I mean really you don't have to pay for extra help. You can't do math, or spell.... Sad really.

  • @Potts132 im majoring in physics to become an engineer not english and its called short form im not writing an essay or some shit. also im getting about a 92 in calculus

    shows you what you know

  • @mrkillerbeast100 I'm not English so...

Not to mention, 92 in Calculus doesn't really impress me, nor does majoring in engineering. 3 people have done it in my family thus far, through the Alberta system which is one of the best in the world.

  • @Potts132 ok... well it looks like i have made it through a free education system then with an above avg GPA

  • @mrkillerbeast100 Which i congratulate you for. At least I know the future is in good hands (engineering wise)

  • @Potts132 and hockey wise aswell cause its canada

    nuff said

  • @mrkillerbeast100 Can't take a compliment I see

  • @Potts132 acyually i did. i just added something else to it

  • @mrkillerbeast100 Alright then

  • @Potts132 fuck you

  • @mrkillerbeast100 Love you too bro (: or bra

  • @Potts132 thanks babe

  • we talk about 1972 summit series, the 2002 salt lake gold medal game and the 2010 gold medal match.

IMO this was the most on the edge series of hockey i have seen.

  • canada play great but if you c how goals come youl c cccp is umbelivubll

    i cant say it better

  • Canada got no breaks from refs.... Just typical smack talk from haters! when ever Canada beats the Russians the game was fixed... GROW UP!!!!!

  • @trueguinnessking i just remember the RED ARMY leaving the ice against the Flyers in 76 i think, crying about how physical and dirty the Flyers were. Bunch of sucks, take our ball and go home....lets not forget the Red Light NOT coming on in 72 after Canada scored.

  • Nice hook by Howerchuk on the back check. lmao

  • Gretzky-Hawerchuk-Lemieux for a line....that's just flat out sick.

  • @Jsizzler2 why was joe murphy given so much playing time with Lemieux and Gretz, i don't remember Murphy ever beign that great.....ju wondering, correct me if i'm wrong??? Hawerchuk-for sure.

  • @quincee33 Wow...Joe Murphy. There's a blast from the past. From what I remember about him was he had alot of hype around him but never totaly lived up to it.

  • @Jsizzler2 Larry

  • Fuhr was horrible in this tournament!

  • @MAGNNUM finally someone said it. yur absolutey right, just like Dryden in 72... it happens to the best of them, just like Tretiak in 80 against U.S.

  • >>Tripping penalty on Bykov on the last Canada goal was more than evident.

True, Hawerchuk hooked him, but there should have been a penalty against the Soviets on their 4th goal, as Bourque was hooked.

  • And you think that evens things out?

The hook on Bourque was not nearly as obvious.

But overall there should have been a penalty called before every other Canadian goal.

  • @unnamed00 Its relevant because you have to look at it in the context of the time, the game has changed.

  • What??

  • Reply showed his stick was lifted. Howerchuks was so obvious.

  • @radschiefhrrh definitly, but thats how russia plays... trip a guy instead of going in and digging it out... or stay back and wait till the puck comes to us instead of playing defense

  • Goulet is playing in this WTF this guy must be a fossil now pushing 70

  • This to me was the greatest game ever.

  • Go Canada Go!

  • lets get real here.. if the canadian team had been playing and training together as long as the soviet team it would have been no contest. Gretzky and Mario on the same line.. forget about it!

  • If the referee in that game was some neutral like swedish or finnish one, game would be more equal.

Don Koharski was the best 6th man for Canada. Tripping penalty on Bykov on the last Canada goal was more than evident.

  • How can you not have a neutral ref? Regoddamndiculous.

  • @quiggs111 you're not getting real. The soviet team were a pair of all stars just like the canadians were. The canadians are at an advantage being on home ice.

If the soviets play anyone on neutral ice, they'd beat anyone, Canadians included.

  • @quiggs111 That's true. But Canada had home ice advantage and it's on NHL sized rinks instead of International sized rinks.

One problem with the Russians is that the national team is the same as the Red Army team. You play against disadvantaged teams for so long that you lose your edge.

  • @quiggs111 so true, Soviets practically lived together. They were an awesome machine tho, Kharlamov and Tretiak was amazing, but come on, like u say Gretzky & Lemieux all day all night.

  • @quincee33 i realize Tretiak and Kharlamov were in the 70's ealry 80's, i just meant they wer amazing Soviet players just like Fetisov, Larionov...etc.

  • @quiggs111 Really?? so why nhl clubes which playing every season about 90-100! games lost in general score to soviet clubes like Dynamo which were playing in season about 50 games? :)

  • @quiggs111 i completley agree. the major advantage that the soviets have is the length and intensity of their training

  • @quiggs111

lets get real here. if the refs were not biased, the USSR would crush the canadiens every game in those days

  • I remember once, not sure if it was 2002 olympic gold medal for womens hockey, or a world championship for them, but it was canada VS usa. One of the refs was AMERICAN (I thought that was not allowed :P). She called EVERYTHING againsts canada, I don't even think usa got 1 penalty or bad call. Canada found a way to win the game. The better team will ALWAYS come out with the win no matter what the calls are. Unless it's a goal and they call no goal when it is.. ;). That could mess you up;o

  • who is the color commentator?
