  • The economy is in the situation because americans think it is is seems " to hard" to keep there mone here. BUy american and we would not be dependent on other countrys for other products. Gm would not be bankrupt and auto sales would be average and we would be keeping the jobs here

    That simple

  • Well, I will never buy another GM vehicle again until the UAW is eliminated regardless of party affiliation...

It's already bad the way things are. The worst thing they could do is becoming STUPID and start supporting Republican'ts.

  • According to Reuters, sources say that GM (NYSE: GM) will likely file for bankruptcy some time after midnight tonight and before June 1

  • You're wrong in terms of the effect of the auto industry's role in the American economy. Manufacturing is essential to our economic survival, and the auto industry is the nation's largest manufacturer. The auto industry couldn't have anticipated that the federal government's officials charged with the duty of policing financial institutions would turn a blind eye to the illegal and irresponsible activities that created our current economic woes.

  • GM, already blew threw the first round of money, proving that no matter how much good money you throw at that company it will all turn out bad, there business model is broken and can't be repaired, the auto industry is less than 4% GDP it is not and has not been the driving force in the US for decades now. Saving them is a good move for our image, but not a good business move. Fixed cost are two high to ever be profitable. (Econ101)

  • Ok idiots support foreign companies & countries instead of your own, that part of the reason we are in this mess. Lets just keep making Asia stronger & the US weaker, GREAT IDEA & your kids can have a much lower standard of living working @ Walmart or McDonalds. Better yet why don't you & your family move to Korea or China.

  • I support American-made vehicles. Specially those made by GM but when a company places the UAW priorities first instead of the consumer who's making them rich, you tend to rethink your options when purchasing a product from a company with that behavior.

  • We can loan $25 billion now, and watch it go down the drain (with subsequent requests for handouts). Or take the hit of $156 billion and rebuild.

  • whole industry needs a shake up. if these were better times, us gov should ahve let the big 3 collapse. perhaps then, new companies would crop up which give a damn about climate responsibility and responsiveness to a changing market

  • Yes... that is a free market! There will be change nothing ever lasts..... well we have one last great resource and that is our people..... yes. Some will have to see that an education and hard work will make you, YOU! it is finally time to start making something NEW that people can use and not relying on prior empires built by business men of the past. Now is the time to look at what other countries do with limited resources.... we have a lot to learn...

  • The thing is those cars manufactured and sold in North America will still be manufactured and sold in America; Any company buying back these bankrupt companies, are not going to manufacture them elsewhere. would cost too much in transport. Why does Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc. have manufacturing plants in North America?

  • Sorry, I say let them drown and use the money as start up capital for new companies that will make fuel efficient futuristic cars built here in North America. How can they say they are more fuel efficient?? My 1993 Ford Escort wagon got BETTER mileage than MOST of the new cars on the road today in that price range. Not to mention SUVs and the other gas guzzlers that have come out when we are supposed to be saving fuel?! I say start over, from the TOP down.

  • so much love during the holidays.....

  • Buy American car!!

    Fuck Jap and Korean car!

    White Power!!

  • fuck that american piece of shit car, buy German car (white power) buy japanese save you money and headache at the mechanic,,GM, chrisler and ford need to die,,,,i know i am a mechanic,,,they suck

  • The big three are run by criminals... even as things looked worse and worse fiscally, they all started building muscle cars again!! That does huge damage to their images. Even if they sell at a profit, I ( like most other people looking for a new car) would see that as a sign of missplaced priorities. As a result, I'll never even enter their show rooms.

Their are dozens of Japanese and German manufacturers in the U.S. yet they're not begging for money. The market place has spoken, end of story.

  • GM should stop whining in the first place.

  • lol.Thats what happens when you put all your eggs in only a few baskets.Time to deconstruct huge companies and change the way corporations work and are constructed.

  • Giving money to GM is like giving money to a drug addict, they are not an American company there a global company, just look at what they have done to Detroit and flint there already in a depression, sorry but we all reap what we sow, but don't worry corporations run this government and they'll steal every last cent they can from the taxpayers

  • Just one word will fix the problem. Just one word over and over again:

    Nationalization

    Nationalization

    Nationalization

If not, let capitalism work. If they fail someone else will take their place. If the bailout happens then I just pray that at least they fire all the CEO's. They have forgotten the basic rules of business.

  • letting the big 3 collapse isnt an option id rather give them all the money they need now then to send this country in a depression as for the big 3 quality its all in how its taken care of not how its built ubzm555 if ya go 2-4 years without any maitnence it isnt gonna last no matter who makes it. i would rather my car be built by americans and the money be put back in america vs hiding behind your car is built here by americans but your corprate hq is in japan.

  • The big 3 motto is, lets make a car that last every 2-4 years that way we keep the production going and we get our pockets growing also hahaha American people will never know Shhh!!!

  • How many people could have stayed employed for Mulally's $760,000 of "personal" corporate jet use in 2007 alone??? Does he really care about the working families? I do not think so.

IN 2008, FORD GAVE OUT $80,000+ BONUSES TO ITS MANAGEMENT even though the company knew the upcoming years would be difficult. Now (in the SAME year) Ford is after tax payer dollars to fatten their wallets?!?!? No to Corporate Greed.

  • I am Canadian, but I really hope the US gets its self in order, especially this. I would rather have our strong cousin to the south, then, then the coming giants in Asia looming over us.

Thanks to the Walmarts, and the fact that so many North Americans want cheap at any cost it is happening faster everyday

  • Capitalism is great in some ways, but over that last decade or more you have seen corporate greed overide any national pride. They don't care one bit about America. They care about Shareholders, whether they are American, Chinese,Russian or Haitian. And becuase of this , the US has lost most of its manufacturer base.

Wall street makes the rich richer. Detroit and all give good money to middle class and everything connected to them.

  • All those millions of jobs use services, go to restaraunts,by gas, go to the dentist. And all those services depend on the UAW workers and thei descent wage for their living too. This goes way beyond the auto makers.

  • let me ask the "screw america first" crowd a question...is it the liviable wages and benefits your jelous of or just the fact you would prefer another country to be number 1 instead of an American company?so-called "free trade" is destorying the USA and is as much a marxist idea as anything...just redistrabuting wealth from the USA to the rest of the world is a globalist idea right out of Karl Marx!WE need more manufracturing done here at home!quit believing the lies of economic traitors.

  • Your job is next

  • I drive all american made. Four. For damn good reasons.

  • BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • jap. cars rule period.....us cars suck fact!

(GM)(FORD)(CHRYSLER)=JUNK!!! Let'em Fall, let the president, ceo's bail there company out not our problem!!! You auto makers did this to yourself so...get out of it yourself we the people had nothing to do with it so no dont ask for our money! Go screw yourself some more..hahahahaha

  • You do know that if the big three collapse the foreign manufacturs would suffer too?

  • This video is absolutely STUPID!

New, more aggressive car companies will rush to fill the void left by the death of the Big 3. These NEW companies will build cars based on CONSUMER needs, not the old, tired Detroit business model from the 1970's.

Let them die. To hell with the UAW. Let's start fresh with REAL capitalism and not today's socialist/corporatism PRETENDING to be capitalism.

New car companines are already making plans to fill the void left by the Big 3.

    Bring it!

  • You are another fool who believes the media and the libs who want to take down the large manufacturers in the US. You probably work for a transplant company; if not, you are really a fool and refuse to look at the full effect of what you are saying.

  • An Important point to think about ........

The economy in general is in the Toilet! All of the good paying jobs have moved overseas to China. We as Americans have the greatest control over our economy right now and I keep wondering why we are not using it to our advantage.

General Motors aside for a moment, stores like Walmart refuse to buy american products and insist on China Imports. We need to DEMAND US made products by American Companies. put our people to work! create jobs at home

  • Too True!

  • If we really claim to be a free market society, I should choose the product with the best value: reliability, features, economy, cost to insure, depreciation and financing. Why should I buy a car that I KNOW will only last me 8 years on average vs 15 years for an overseas model? My family bought American in the 1980's, had heaps of problems, then bought Japanese and the problems stopped. We don't ever plan on coming back. You bled us for repairs in the 80's, now we're bleeding you....NO BAILOUT

  • comparing a car from 1980 to 2000 is insane, I owned both and in the 1980's both japanese and North American were crap without a doubt.

your position is more than flawed it's childish buy whatever you want nobody is saying otherwise.

but instead of speaking like an idiot think like your interested in profit..... pay $25 now to make another $156 in 3 years or lose $156 out of pocket every 3 years forever.

  • OMG, we're suffering! Please, We need cash to put on our pockets please!!

We are in NEED for hard cash to travel in luxury! Fuck everyone else!!

  • once they get 25b, in 3-6months they will be back for 50.

    FUCK THEM. UAW MUST DIE!

  • kia is hurting but they're not begging for a bailout from anyone

    why?

  • Currency exchange rates.

The US Dollar is very strong right now.

  • I hope the American car industry crashes and burns. I believe if it does something wonderful will grow up out of the ashes. New technology, new innovative cars that don't guzzle gas. I also hope that gas prices sky rocket again. Something drastic has to happen or people will just keep on driving big waistful vehicles forever- and this is it.

  • jasper777777 - you are a fool. Where are you employed ? Don't dodge the question, answer it. You are a said excuse for an American, if you are an American.

  • I'm happy to answer the question. I'm an American who has left America and moved to New Zealand— where I am living the Amirican dream.

Working and living in New Zealand is so much better than in America.

  • You live in New Zealand. It's a great country. But since you moved there your opinion doesn't mean S**T, so shut the F**K UP !!!

  • Spoken like a person, who moved to New Zealand and doesn't care about the US. I'd like to stick a kiwi up your _ _ _.

  • I always charge extra for that.

  • what's the deal with you, and hating "liberals". Look up the word in the dictionary, it's got a positive description. You're presding George W could have vetoed the bill...but he didn't. I'm for the bill, but they have it ass backwards. They have us giving them money first THEN restructuring the business...that's dumb. Fire the CEO's, replace them with competent ones, and do NOT give them a severence package/golden parachute.

  • This is the "too big to fail" argument. The Big 3 need to stay in business because they are the Big 3. Meanwhile, taxpayers prop them up as they bleed money from poor market planning and an inability to innovate.

All a bail-out would do is ossify the industry and give them no reason to innovate and change. Smaller businesses are crowded out by the Big 3, stifling progress in the US.

Better to spend the $26 billion to give payouts to unemployed workers than to nationalize the auto industry.

  • Absolute garbage. This 'report' is false. If the US auto industry fails, many Japanese and Korean car companies who build cars in the US will simply pickup the slack.

  • Sure, Who would buy the Japanese and Korean cars with 8 million unemployed.

    Brilliant!

Everyone will be hurt, not just those directly involved in the auto industry. I don't care what you do for a living. Unless you are already on welfare, you WILL be affected. If people don't have a job, there isn't money to be spent. That goes for retail, food, medical, and the list goes on and on. Look at the big picture!

  • OH? Are all the current foreign car buyers going to go out and buy some more NEW vehicles? All the millions that loose their jobs probably won't be in a position to buy anything let alone NEW vehicles. Plus, there is going to be a ton of used vehicles then when everyone defaults on their loans/leases because they have no money left to cover their expenses. LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE IS THE BEST ADVICE FROM NYLOX2004.

  • They would suffer too because there would be no compeitation to make them build better cars. Not to mension have the country would be unemployed.

  • WHATS their plan?....blow through 25b... execs get away with their money, same ole thing? stop pulling this scare tactic gm, mega welfare recipient

  • The bailout won't work. The people who decide where and how to spend the money are the same.

PNC, financially healthy, used its share of bailout money to buy a rival bank, not to help homeowners or taxpayers.

It will be the same with the Big Three. They've known forever they needed to improve, become more efficient. They refused.

They can't be trusted, don't care about environment, workers, or taxpayers.

Change the CEOs, rework the UAW system, FORCE higher gas mileage laws?

    Ok.

  • The last time that the government gave them money they PAID IN FULL WITH INTEREST BEFORE THE "DUE DATE"! I highly doubt that the banks will pay back ANY of they money! The government says that they need to show how they will make improvement and want them to pay their labor force less yet they have given AIG bailout money THREE TIMES ALREADY totaling $ 150 BILLION! Yet I don't see AIG employees taking pay cuts or them improving things & the gov. never said to improve things! MAJOR HYPOCRITES!!!!

  • Adam, I don't agree with the bank bailouts either. As i said in earler post, I think if any bailout money is given it should be given from the bottom up so that it actually helps people who are in trouble. I think their plan of infusing money into a system from the top and hoping it trickles down to who really deserves the help , will not work and if it does finally trickle down it will be way too late for a lot of people. Help the people who need it, instead of greedy corporate giants!

  • I do however think that a more sensible thing to do would be let the companies re-structure under bankruptcy and if there is to be any bail out money it should go directly to the workers to prop up their benefits and retirement .

  • If they file for bankruptcy there is one little very very dark secret that the Repukes keep failing to mention: all the people that worked there for their WHOLE LIFE will LOSE their pension & company health care! The Repukes don't care because all they Repukes care about is BIG BUSINESS! If you don't believe me look at the past 8 years of Bush & look at all the new "laws" he is passing before he leaves office, who do they benefit? Hell look at the past 4 Repuke presidents, who did they cater to?

  • I agree about Bush. But Reagan was one of the greatest presidents in history. You may not be old enough to remember how bad it was in the 70's. But he turned the country around.

  • Its funny but what I remember from Reagan was the opposite- when Reagan was elected to me- it seemed like only bad things happened- Savings and loan scandel- then he ran up a huge deficit-

then recession - people lost there jobs - then Clinton was elected and everything got better.

Reagan seemed like one of the worst presidents to me.

  • if in fact this is a "so called loan" then why isn't GM applying to a bank for it's financing instead of turning to the american taxpayer??? I'll tell you why................ No bank in their right state of mind would lend a dime to a company that is being run like GM. Why??? Because there is not a chance in Hell that they can ever repay the loan. So again.....why should the taxpayers be held at the gun for their irresponsibility??

I say No loan , No bail out.

  • It's a LOAN not a bailout!

  • fear tactics.

Why should we bail out a greedy industry who kept forcing battle tanks on the public and getting their asses kicked AGAIN by foreign automakers.

Fuck the bailout. Let the CEOs who drove their ship into the rocks bail themselves out. Don't touch my god damn tax dollars.

  • Of course, times are tough, no one can deny that. But how come the Japanese companies are weathering the storm just fine? This is the result of poor business management and horrible short-sightedness. The Japanese car is becoming the new American car. Heck, the two best-selling cars are the American-made Accord and Camry.

  • here is how the japanese are ahead of GM...UAW! the cost of labor to build a gm vehicle is double that of a toyota... not because they are more efficient but because the union has the pay scales so outta whack that gm pays $70+ an hour per vehicle and toyota pays $40 an hour on average. Never mind the benefits etc of all those retired.A bailout is needed to have congress help GM and the Union make real concessions if money is"loaned".Until very recently the union has been 2 difficult 2 deal with

  • union labour costs make up about 3-5% of the MSRP. How much can labour costs have anything to do with the marketability or Big 3 autos, or the competitiveness of the Big 3 in general? Each auto worker adds ~$300,000 of value/yr. Who should benefit from that productivity?

  • Do you really think that people working the line actually take home $70@hour? Are you really that gullible?

  • You are another fool who believes the liberal media and politicians; they are trying to take down large American manufacturing. You a said excuse for an American, if you are an American.

  • I feel for the workers. It was out of there control. On the same note, I know that my workers are the lifeblood of the company so I run it in a way to benifit myself and the worker. It all boils down to poor business plans. I liked the interview with Ford CEO the other night, when the interviewer asked why they were 12 years behind Toyota Prius. The answer? We built the Escape. They need to go into bankruptcy to restructure. Plain and simple.

  • fail... fail to the ground. you deserve it.

  • Blow..blow me until i put your eyes out. You deserve it.

  • PURE PROPAGANDA !!!

Nice try GM. I wonder how much they're spending on this promotion. The US will rise to the occasion. Not all of those people will remain on their butts. Many will start businesses of their own and some will find other work. File Chapter 11 like everone else and get your house in order. Don't just ask for mo mo mo.

I have a small business and no one is bailing me out!

Let's "bail out" the 70 million small businesses in this country ... (not).

  • If they go, new blood will take over that market share and actually innovate something.

  • Could I please get some money to help my real estate company?

  • If they would spend money on advancing technology and not on lobbying for lower MPG standards they would do much better

  • Let them bleed to death...Those companies have been selling us stagnant technolgy for decades. My MPG's are no better now than in the 1980's.Don't forget about the EV1.. GM had the chance to pull ahead of the rest of the world, instead they destoyed the cars, and supressed the electic technology. Its time reap what you sow.....

  • Why do we NEED to save the big 3 since all there good at is building so-so cars and gas guzzling trucks. i live in MN and say Fuck'em. They have been foolish for way to long. The big three need to go down!

  • what hoooo $75/hr oh man I will work for just $ 15/hr

  • Congress is thinking about giving them money; the tax payers hard earn money!!!! No way!!!

If they want to give them my money at least give me the option on voting on this!

  • WOW... it took japan over 67 years to finally beat the US. THIS is payback for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings... not to mention all the asian slurs and ridicule. FIRST... they take over and become leaders in electronics (Sony). Now cars, Ford and GM will be relics just like with RCA and Magnovox...

  • Hi all....Im from Japan. I have listened to all this bull and and want you to know long after the Big 3 have left the scene our country will provide you gas guzzlers again, because we know thats what you want.

  • But don't worry, my American car fans. China's big automaker has announced that they are thinking about buying GM and Chrysler!! YAY!

So I guess...when Japan is buying out buildings and banks of America these days, China will buy out GM and Chrysler? This is going to be very interesting. And South Korean companies like Samsung and LG are dominating the cellphone and electrical stuff market already anyway. Guess, America will soon become a province of China, South Korea or Japan?

    ;D

  • When the Japanese banks still have plenty of money to lend Toyota, Japan may eventually surpass EU and the US on the economy, according to Bloomberg.

The Japanese companies like Toyota and Honda have played their business roles by following the Capitalistic system, when the US adopted communist system(Union) on their auto business. And at the same time, GM, Ford and Chrysler kept producing outdated looking, super unreliable junk cars.

Toyota cars are reliable, so is Toyota ITSELF

    ;)

  • tell all these f*ckin banks that already got bailout money, and who still AREN'T lending, to get off their arse and bail these losers out WTF

  • Look at the people at GM who are asking for our money:

Rick Wagoner: Total compensation package in 2007 $14.4 million. Bob Lutz: TCP in 2007 $6.9 million. Fritz Henderson $7.6 million.(GM exec. salaries were INCREASED and now they want OUR money for their industry?)

Perhaps Bob Lutz can sell off some of the jets from his "military jet" collection or the GM execs can sell some of their multi-million $ mansions and help their employees, instead of begging the taxpayers for money.

  • Remove UAW is the ONLY way.

  • So what if they declare bankruptcy, it's not like they want to liquidate themselves. In a chapter 11 bankruptcy all they would do is restructure themselves and get rid of all their bad debt and stupid union contracts that they managed to negotiate.

  • Stupidity! NO AGREEMENT TO MAKE EFFICIENT CARS WILL BE HONORED BY THESE SHITS! THAT IS THE TRACK RECORD: NO REMORSE/NO CHANGE! VOLT IS A JOKE! OBSOLETE BEFORE BEING BUILT! So we will see 50B of useless cars & trucks BURNED IN GIANT BONFIRES! Hoovers FOOD could be STORED: these metal cars CAN'T! Wake up US, Fuel-Less Vehicles in China are being produced by groups of 300 or LESS! Sold world-wide on the NET! GM Dinasaur is DEAD & CANNOT BE REVIVED by ANY "emergency shocks"!

  • So..... tgold1968. Protection of oil shipping lanes will end if the domestic auto industry dies? The need for parking spaces will cease? We won't need the highway system? Are you going to walk everywhere you go? Won't everyone else have to do the same? No fire engines? No ambulance transport? No delivery trucks? YOU a burden on society! Stop breathing! You are an ASS!

freakbuster: You're an ass, too! Japan subsidizes it's auto makers. All 12 of them. Trade policies screw the U.S. Dipshit!

  • Sorry for my english. But I´m german.

And "soco13466" its a good idea. But the carmakers are living from their emotional selling propositions. And a car is much more compicated then a PC. And You have to trust it with your live.

And which technology from an american car, would you install in your car voluntarily? Example 4 Speed automatic or VW´s DSG? The american Car technology is in the 90´s.

  • Buster, I hate to disagree with you. The big 3 have been utilizing American, German, and Japanese engineering for years. THey have also begun using China for their development. Did you know that the GM factory in China is a joint effort between VW and GM? Ford has used British, Japanese, and German engineering for many years, why do you think they purchased Land Rover, Jaguar, and Mazda? Doesn't GM own your Opel?

  • Yes! That points out the question! Why does GM have so much problems, when they used and learned so much from other car makers?

    We can only guess.

My opinion is the easiest answer: GM was afraid of changing something! It was the biggest carseller. Today, you need something else. Flexible structures. Flexible technology. GM is a monster.

  • The downfall of the big three, is the result of century´s of wrong company policy. Too many workers, old factories, unattractive models, no answer to the competitors from Japan, no innovation, putting the focus only on the american market and on big motors. You can´t help them. Invest 25 billion Dollars now, will keep them alive for a few month only. They have to discard workers, they have no choice. Sell them with a garantuee from the government that they will take over a part of the debts.

  • ⊂二二二( ^ω^)二⊃ ブーン

  • Pathetic!

  • The multiplier effect is of little long term value if it is based on money flows from government. If they cannot base the multiplier on money flows from the private sector, then it is better that the restructuring process should take over. Let the process of Creative Destruction carry on.

  • Exactly. The multiplier for this industry hinges on a number public subsidy systems: excise taxes that go towards highways road building and military, local parking requirements on the part of private land owners, and military protection of oil shipping lanes.

All are a beast of burden on our economy; all lobbied for by GM and others for years. Enough with the corporate handouts, already.

  • Key to this setup is the standardization of bolt patterms, fitting seats, mounts, etc. electrical systems... this has been done in electronics... used with electric motors for decades, now with computers... alternators compatible with any other man. conforming to the ind. standards... think of the jobs, the creativity, the experimentation... like biology, best rises to top like cream on milk. Assy in your pole barn/garage, or at a dealership. Training standardized. Cool huh?

  • This will work. Pricing will be key: and financing must allow buying complete "packages" based on value of parts and combo thereof. you can drive a chevtoyohondbmwford. Autos need to be sold in a whole new way. Upgrades: say you have a certain engine. Sell it to someone else, trade it in... buy a bigger one. Seats suck? Replace. Build what you can afford. Distribution handled by morphing present dealerships. Change or die. Tell me I'm nuts. Modular is the future.

  • Time for the next revolution in Automaking: the modular concept. based on the successful computer ind.... you order your frame from co. x, body from co.y, engine, trans, interior comp. from other suppliers. Dealership handles deal. Ansi type standards for mounting footprints, compabilities. You could buy "packages," as yoiu do when you buy a Dell, HP, etc, except this transfers to autos. Standardization is key. Think of the possibilities... you could assemble your own package from suppliers.

  • Suppliers could charge more at dealership level... Say you want a frame for a coupe... order a body from one of several co's... your engine from another, seats from Recaro, suspension from another... all components subject to ind. standards and fmvss standards. Say you want a truck... order frame from Acme, cab from cabco, box from boxco, seats from X... etc, etc. you get the idea. Eventually, certain combos would give best performance, mileage, comfort, etc. This I believe would work.

  • on one hand, they deserve to die. They bet the farm on SUVs when they should have been going after fuel efficiency, sold us the same damn model under forty-thousand different badges and somehow between the three of them maintained 12 brands.

On the other hand, vengeance here has the high high price of sending ourselves into hell with them. Is your thirst for blood here so high that you wouldn't bat an eye at spilling some of your own?

  • Don't you all care about your fellow American's jobs? 1 out of 10 people in the US have jobs stemming from the US Auto Industry. This is not a bailout. It is a LOW INTEREST LOAN. The companies should and will be held to new environmental standards as stipulation. I don;t think we should let the little people who work manufacturing jobs or are retired suffer. The ripple effect on our US and global economy will be horrible if these 3 go down.

  • Care about fellow american Jobs??? You're kidding right? GM Hasn't cared about American Jobs or the American Consumer for decades. It shows in the crappy quality they are building and with their attitude towards the customer when something goes wrong. For instance all of the people who got screwed from low quality paint jobs that GM did absolutely nothing about except blame "atmospheric fall out" for the problem. And they failed to change with the times- poor management Its time for them to go!

  • let them fail. they have sucked for years. just using the economy as an excuse.

  • such propaganda - why don't you FIX IT instead...

    NO to a Bailout

  • The carmakers, for example, fought hard in recent years against two Congressional efforts to raise fuel economy standards, at a time when Americans were struggling with more expensive gasoline and had become more environmentally conscious. They won the 2005 fight, when 67 senators, including Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Kerry, sided with Detroits argument that it did not have the technology to meet a modest increase.

Source The New York Times 11/17/2008

  • Stop making pieces of shit for outrages prices stop bulling the free market with your union bullshit funny how just any john doe cant get a job with the big 3 if there not family to a union member so get fucked the world wont stop without you

  • I think the bloated unions and poor management sucked the teet dry. let emm fail.

    Banks too!

  • Yes, also my Real Estate company could use some help too.

  • Please also give my printing company public funds.

  • Toyota or Honda need to buy out GM, Ford and Chrysler for the sake of Detroit and the world economy.

Because simply those dumb American bureaucrats can not do their jobs. Let the Japanese CEOs of Toyota and Honda control Detroit for the sake of the American people.

    :)

  • Thanks for the great commentary everyone! I think I am going to head off to watch some mindless TV...I need a break from the depression. No pun intended.

  • Hey "supportusamfg", it looks like YouTube deleted most of our conversation! Can you find it?

  • As I have stated before, the bailout is a necessary evil. The alternative is much much worse. The fallout is already beginning.

  • I see your point. My mind keeps hitting a wall when I try to justify the bailout by telling myself the alternative will most likely be much worse however. America is twisted with loop hole seekers in places of power. The further we get from our founding fathers model of defining America the more we wound ourselves. Either revert to the founders model, or collapse, suffer greatly, and then restructure as a completely different nation. Of coarse that won't happen, we would be taken over first.

  • Ha! So how are these new companies going to get loans to get started working on their new ideas? And how many people are they going to employ? Don't forget they will get taxed if they make > $250,000 which will be passed on to us consumers. I'm waiting for that new, revolutionary gadget.

  • The country will not go down because of the big 3. New companies and people with new fresh ideas will be born and the 100 year old internal combustion engine will be a thing of the past. Its time to change!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well, it will go down. And bring a massive chaos within the United States.

Who knows, the land of America might end up becoming a battlefield once again?

  • You have a way with words, I commend you. I have a friend who cringes and lectures me on our downfall each and every time he sees a Toyota with an American flag sticker or a Support our Troops yellow ribbon magnet on it. It is all tied together...never forget!

  • here we go another open minded person. thank you thetalkingmoney exactly the words in my mouth. what kind of people would we be if we just let 3 million people go to waste. yeah sure there would be a rift and it would eventually be filled. but who wants to go through the mine field to get the cookie eventually, when you could just walk around it for 15 bucks and save your life

  • I wonder how many of you Big 3 haters wanted to wrap yourselves in the American flag and sing koom-by-ya after 9/11? Now 3 million workers are in danger of seeing their American dream slip away and you want to "Let em Fail"? Remember the so-called 'Rust Belt' was in recession long before the rest of the country. Everyone else is just playing catch up. You may not feel our pain today or tomorrow but if we go down the rest of the country will too!

  • XRAvision, what do you mean by huge tax relief and cash benefits? I spent my $300 stimulus check in a hot minute. What kind of money do you think the government can afford to pass along to us little people?

  • Answering "supportusamfg" Thanks for the message - I said "And if there is to be any bailout at all, it should be directed to all legal citizens of the United states. The stimulus was less than meaningful, I agree. Our government should not be in the business of bailing out corporate structures however. We should let things follow their natural coarse. What kind of money do you think the government can afford to pass around to all these losing companies anyway? NO BAILOUT PLEASE. Best regards

  • Ben, send the Helicopters now!

    The US-$ is soo doomed.

  • I just happened to look up some MPG and quality data. Toyota Camry 21 city/31 hwy MPG and the Chevy Malibu 22/33 MPG for 2009. From JD Power: The Chevy Malibu is the highest-ranking midsize car in initial quality in the 2008 IQS.

  • ALSO!!!! Gm did not back up thier screw-ups.

Look up the DEXCOOL class action lawsuit. Would you seriously by another GM car that needs a bailout or files chapt 11 ? How will they stand behind the product today if they cant even pay the bills? Think about it!!

  • yeah supportusamfg. true that great arguement, i honestly dont knwo what people are thinking. if you wanna argue with us. Look up you info. dont just base it off opinions. i have staight facts you can look up. Motortrend! and real people sources.Dont give up people look where thats gotten you in life!heres the fact of the matter. The auto industry accounts for a huge part of our gdp. it would be stupid nad ignorant to let it fall.Dont even talk to me about economic turmoil,i live in east Michigan

  • The growth of our U.S. economy over the past 10 years has proved to resemble a teenager on steroids. Bailouts will reward the past corporate borrowing addictions and bad management habits that have lead these corporate structures to their eminent demise in the absence of a bailout. As a democracy, we should let troubled companies follow their natural courses.

  • And if there is to be any bailout at all, it should be directed to all legal citizens of the United states in the form of huge tax reliefs and cash payments. This would provide relief for actual humans rather than bailing out shell companies and corporate structures. This would in turn refresh markets naturally and cultivate the economic soil providing an environment for new company start ups and thriving growth for future generations.

  • The big three have had their day, they have built their empire and made their money. It's time for a new and emerging era of young and up and coming entrepreneurs to be given a real chance. You could call the human bailout the "Reconciliation". The name comes at a time when the Government needs to reconcile with it's people in order to regain the trust and respect of it's people. Yes, jobs will be lost if the big 3 go under, but new jobs will be created in order and in due coarse.

  • nes buying the big cars and trucks, honestly where does an impala fit in? and America as a whole wasnt ready for it. the technology exists and there is even better ones that don't require a total redoing of our fueling infrastructure. Co2 to methonol! look it up people. We bought the big cars and trucks so seriously stop trying to pass the blam to just the upper management( even though imo it DOES need to be redone or have reworked priorities)greed, and ignorance people.. thats what happened

  • NO BAIL OUT!!!!!! Its to late! They had thier chance back in the 70's during the last energy crunch and turned thier fat noses up. We were forced to drive the gas guzzlers to line up at the pumps for our gas rations. So what did they do? build more crap for 30 more years while the Japanese spent money on quality and perfected cars with good gas milage.

  • Yes. This buys time. The Big Three are making the moves they need to in order to survive. It is a hard pill to swallow but it is true. I have seen what is coming in their product lines. They are all cars or small crossovers. If you get rid of the CEOs, who do you put in there? A government official? Could someone please tell me where all of those people are supposed to find jobs? What is the government going to retrain them to do? What industry is hiring a few million folks?

  • and im sick of people "europe has fuel efficient cars" STOP FUCKING CRYING! theyve had over $4 gas for 15 years if not more and its $8 now! R and D, production takes 5 years Minimum! You're misunderstanding my point. I would love all the auto jobs from the big three to be here. But its just not possible for them all to be here.Everybody brings up the electric car, it was Great! im not denying it, it was corruptin that led to it going down. But people... its called a Chevy Volt! and we were the o

  • Bye, bye GM. I won't shed a tear for your SUVs and the rest of your idiotic portfolio. Game Over.

  • Thank you seriously finally someones open minded. heres what we need to do 1. Revamp product lines(they're goin as fast as they can people) 2. Redo the unions and upper maanagement's mentality( not getting rid of them just making them better).People the 25 billion could cover the 3's costs for R and D for at least a year if not more, fuel efficient cars faster. again people.. You bought the damn F350!.

  • we used 2 make stuff in the U.S now all we make is RICH CEOs

  • Thank you woods! The bailout is not at the top of everyone's wish list but what is the alternative? At the moment, I am trying to figure out what Christmas presents I can get at the Dollar Store. What in the world is life going to be like if 3 million more people lose their jobs? Where are these people going to find work? The government will be forced to support them with unemployment benefits, etc. We need industry in the US. We are going to have to buy EVERYTHING from outside the US?

  • The people who made these decisions.... were warned years and years ago about this very problem. No we are here to witness it. If we bail them out, some other big business will go under. Inflation is gonna be a bitch if we keep printing money. Sure we will still have GM but now we will be paying 10 dollars for a freaking loaf of bread. We have to let it crumble, and build it back up from scratch. Thats how it works.

  • Burn in hell GM you pay your top execs millions while blaming your workers & their unions for your failed business You destroyed electric car technology then you used your media machines on the American public to sell your gas guzzling autos, during a moment in our history when we were in a patriotic froth of American machismo, so you & the oil companies stayed wealthy.Fire your CEO & top execs Then come back and ask us for help. But,really why should we most of us drive Toyotas

  • also, people they cant build EVERYTHING here. they have costs too and need to save money. just look at every other company out there, youre computer for example, the motherboard was probabaly designed here as well as the look, but the plastics, scree, wiring, was assembled or came from somewhere else. This is America we're the world leader, and this is capitolism driven globally linked economy. sooo workers whhoo, i guess just move to Cuba, its called communism....good luck

  • Not true. There was a time in USA history where we made EVERYTHING. "The term, they don't build them like they used to" was after companies started moving overseas. If our manufacturing was made to stay put, they would have figured out a way. Consider this. China and japan mass produce a lot of what we consume. The problem is we didn't replace the jobs we sent out...with jobs that ONLY Americans can produce. We didn't replace the work for our workforce. We export barely anything.

  • Exactly! The focus was trucks and SUVs because that is what the market demanded. If gas hadn't climbed to over $4 a gallon, we'd still be talking about trucks and SUVs. You are right, the other more fuel efficient products are there and have always been there, people just chose not to buy them. So buy them now! I include myself in that statement. I am happy to drive an American product, just having made the move last year from a SUV to a car.

  • on.. tak 5 years people minimum. I know because i have friends in upper magnagemt at all three. and those 5 years are them working their asses off everyday.. so people they're getting there, believe me as fast as physically possible. My friend in R and D at Ford is working close to double shifts everyday to develop fuel efficient cars. So people they're Going as fast as they can, and getting there, and you were the ones who bought the guzzlers. Who would we be as people if we gave up...

  • yes thank you supportusamfg, exactly. Its not all the automakers fault, people ... you bought the trucks, suvs benzes that get 9, 10,11 mpg. and youre complaining about $4 gas!, again you bout them people and if you want a fuel efficient car buy one, new Chevy cruze, aveo. Mazda 3,Mazda 6. the corvette gets 29mpg for god sakes people. and with a predator upgrade chip and other bolt ones around 34mpg.But stop complaining about them not having fuel efficient cars. concept, development, and produc

  • HEY BIG THREE!!!! You guys started this crap by all of your jobs going overseas. I drove nothing but American cars and waved old glory for years while you were building S10's in Mexico back in the 70's remember? You didn,t give a hoot about us poor workers then, but now you want a hand out? Im going to work for volkswagon in Tenn., so I don't care what happens to you loosers.

  • We are in this mess because people don't think about the consequences of their actions. Whether you buy a Japanese car or a German beer, you have to think about where all of those profits are going. People didn't care that they bought a $300,000 home when they could afford a $150,000 home. These actions are whats plaguing the auto industry at the moment. GM sold 9 million units in 2007 so certainly, they are building competitive products. The bailout is a must.

  • No no no. More than half the parts aren't even made here. As Americans we neutered ourselves. We don't produce anything, we don't produce steel, or our our own goods. They go under because they made poor decisions....The EV1 was canceled in 2001 or 02. China makes everything, we just ship it here and put it together. The people who made the decisions for china to have us by our balls, have long decided. We bail them out, another big one will go under. BAILOUTS DONT WORK!

  • Hey GM!!!!What about the class action lawsuit over the dexcool which forced thousands of us to spend hundreds of dollars to repair intake manifold gasket leaks, corroded raditors, heater cores on most GM cars dating back to 1995? Pay me for my repairs and I'll support the bailout!

  • And yes i watched it and again youre being short sighted. im all for electric cars and hybrid technologies, my favorite is the methonol from co2 proposal(look it up) and yes the Big three have been putting out crap. but again people we've been buying it. heres real figures from Motortrend," 60% of Fords sales in the past 10 years have been from trucks, just pickups" followed by Gm with suvs/trucks taking up 45% of theirs. So people i believe in revamping product lines and not putting out crap.

  • dont bail out these money hungry monsters. between the unions and the corporate fatcats for the last 20 years they have been pushing nothing but bad quality cadillacs, suv's, hummers, trucks etc while toyota and honda etc. have been doing it right by building, HELLO......quality? we dont need another industry that needs to be bailed out like the airlines every few years. goodbye you dinosaurs, welcome to the 21st century. get a job at walmart, i hear it only takes a few months to make mgr.

  • Just scare tactics

  • again scorpsx i totally agree with you. and yes youre totally right about Toyota. But the majority of the money goes out of country. And no i am not saying its totally the unions fault youre just short sighted and cant hold an argument intelligently, and everyone else i understand where youre coming from. The upper management of the big three as well as the union bosses are partly corrup. and the benefits to the workers are rediculous. The big three have to completely revamp their product lines

  • How is this the union's fault? A company reports billions of dollars in profits, give's there top exect's millions of dollars in bonus's, and it's the unions fault? The union protect's jobs, benifits, retirement's, etc. I am sorry if you don't have a job that is protected by a union, but they serve a purpose. The help protect workers rights. From some of these posts, the answer would seem to be, just pay workers 7 bucks an hour, pay no benifits, no job security, send more jobs to china, etc.

  • ect.. i know people , retirees who get a new car from Ford every 2 years and have full healthcare with no copay, its rediculous. the unions should be reorganized and redone COMPLETELY!. but again good job all you foreighn car buyers! you dont even deserve to complain about the economy, youre unpatriotic, dont get me wronb i like my beemers and audis and such but people... this is our economy and we should support it as best we can. its called a Cadillac cts, or a vette people... get one

  • Hey Woods my Toyota was made in America built by American workers you brain washed pawn.

  • All these years I have heard stories about the three Auto makers having carburetors that get 100 mpg sitting on their shelves and engines that run on water. IF this was true this would be a perfect time for them to use them. Anyway remember K-mart crying for help. No bail out for them and they are much better today then they were many years ago. If they get their bail out then all shirt and ties need to be asked to leave. Their jobs for all the ones that they say will suffer from the no bail out

  • Bullshit. First you made shit for 30 years and shunned true innovations like hybrids and EV1 lobbying hard to keep that tech dead and touting hydrogen power even though it's nothing more then a stall tactic. Second, chapter 11 does NOT cease production you manipulative dinosaurs. It gets rid of you upper management pissants and reorganizes the company so you come out leaner and hopefully this time with uncorrupt leadership.

  • Third, afraid no one is going to buy a bankrupt company's car is a moot point and just speculation. NO ONE is buying your crap now!

Fourth, for anyone that really wants these losers to survive please do a little research and you'll see no real innovation and actually going backwards!

Finally, also watch "Who Killed The Electric Car?". Shows what they do to real innovation and sheer money they throw away.

  • Thank you! thank you for mentioning that! People forget GM is one of the biggest offenders of buying technology and stifling it, so that no one hears from it again. The EV1 was MADE PEOPLE! we know they have the technology...they have had this technology since the 1960s. WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR. GOOGLE IT its online for free! Then I'm sure you pro bailout people will reconsider.

  • are you fucking stupid!.. did you not read this lend 25 billion or lose 156 billion. where the hell have you been. i live in eastern Michigan and you dont even know what its like, we're suffering the worst job losses and economy in the country. And its not even a comparison to what would happen if the auto industries would go under. now undersond tho im not a union guy i hate the union and it should be disbanded and reregulated by the gov't asap. so much money goes out in unseless healthcare...

  • You're suffering because Mich is LIBERAL. Get rid of the illegal aliens, the H-1B, prosecute corrupt business execs and your economy will boom. It's called "America First." The U.S. needs PROTECTIONISM because the job you PROTECT may be your own.

Now, you have to get out into the streets and demonstrate: NO ILLEGAL ALIENS! NO H-1B! NO OUTSOURING. EITHER USE AMERICAN LABOR or LOSE YOUR BUSINESS, i.e. GET OUT!

  • Flint Michigans "depression" is a direct result of GM closing it's plants there and moving them to Mexico! Holy crap you should be the last person to be defending GM!

  • This "UAW bailout" will only allow GM to survive shot term anyway and cost American taxpayers a fortune. GM couldn't compete against Japanese and to a lesser extent German competition. Now they'll have that plus Korean plus Indian plus Chinese competition soon. These people are dead in the water anyway. Don't throw good money after bad. Let
