@addictedtoyou: I think it's a boarding school. Madeline is the only orphan in the school. In the Lost in Paris movie, Madeline mentioned how she lost her parents while the other girls still have theirs.

my grandma used to tape every episode for me and my cousins when we were little. i think she did it so she could watch the show too haha. one question tho that i never understood.....does anyone know if they lived at a boarding school or was it supposed to be an orphanage?
