Once again, this is a good model, but it seems very arrogant to post a 3.5 minute video of it explaining the hardships of making it and essentially praising yourself for its creation. It is unprofessional. Second of all, all the text should be texture mapped. 3D lettering interrupts an otherwise sealed mesh and costs more polys than they are worth. I dont want to be too harsh, but it is best to be humble when your product is imperfect. When you can make a perfect model, you can be arrogant.
a cool upgrade could have been having the iPod be animated...like going through the sub menus...that would have been cooler. love the loft BTW.....bad ass
at 2:11 you can notice that the reflected light on the wood from the ipod is still in poly's, and not smothed out like the ipod. might want to look into tweaking that up a bit. other then that, great job man, keep it up.
Ok, some tips to you, 1st, the apple logo is bumped i dunno why, since you're using vray u could just increase the roughness, 2nd the fingertap on the black ipod is way to gray, u should increase the blackness, the white ipod is very cool, but the image is too bright for the light u use on the video. Anyway, great job. :)
Studying lighting/texture fundamentals and set-ups would improve your work a lot more than just switching to VRay. My bragging about the software you use you're promoting the idea that software is what makes a great render, which really hurts 3D (and in this case, photography) as an artform.
I think you did a good job with the materials and shapes, but the style of presentation is awkward and not what I would expect from iPod pictures. You should have a better simulation of studio lighting with more contrast and less ambient lighting, with white lights coming from the sides or something fancy like that.
Ahaha thats so damn true, A single pixel died on my ipod classic and its just so annoying, whenever i use it, it just stand out so much even though its a tiny little pixel.
you should make a Specular map so the button circle isn't so reflective. I did that on mine but your screen seems a lot better than mine, just check it out.
It's a great video and the rendering is spot on, however, the one bit of criticism I would give is that at times, the surface looks very flat when it should be glossy and reflective. This is simply because there is nothing to reflect, as there seems to be no environment map. Simply adding a HDRi environment would bring the quality of this right up to the max. Aside from that, I really can't fault it, nice job!
i Just recently started with vray today and 3dsmax last week and have no idea how to come anywhere close 2 this stuff. Pretty Cool and any good tutorials you know of just with vray or 3ds max in general?
Your started using max a week ago? If you intend to create anything like this, you have a lot of work on your hands. If you want to start out - forget about v-ray for now, learn max, do the tutorials that came with 3ds max, they are in depth an give you good grounds - then expand into user made tutorials for more indepth knowledge, learn how to effective make and use materials, then learn v-ray, without good material knowledge, v-ray isnt gonna make your stuff look any better.
How long did it take you to make this? I just recently began 3D modeling with Blender and it takes me forever to make stuff. I can't even imagine how long it would take me to make something this detailed. 3DS Max has a nice reflection system. I guess that's why it costs so much.
well man the model took me 3 weeks because i needed to deals with school and stuff in between, it was really easy to do, but the material mapping and lightning, reflections, until i got it perfetc took me like a month or something... in the beggining, you really make things kind of slow, but once you are used to the commands, modifiers and stuff you begin to do it really fast.
tnx for your comment, i apreciate it a lot, and keep up with your studying of it. I recomend to read as many tutorials as you can in the internet, thats how i learned Everything i know
Excellent Job there, i think u've done this pretty well.
However im not sure V Ray was necessary for these images. I think these kind of images could've done within 3DS MAX. I've recently modelled the new Nano and used pictures off their website for reference, and mine is not as good as yours, but after alot of experimenting with rendering i don't think V Ray would be needed for this. Play around in 3DS Max materials and i think you could get the same effect.
amazing man, i tried using that program and its so hard to get used to,(it took up to much space on my comp so i erased it). but that looks like u got tons of nanos and filmed them. They look perfect man, keep it up.
yo guy veryy nice job!!! you learned only with tutorials?, one more thing don´t play attention to these guys i think that they can`t make this better than you, continue working!!! ps: sorry for the english i`m from colombia! XD buen trabajo viejo!!!
nice models but the render and maps are rubbish...theres no shine in the metal :S or translucency in the plastic .....keep it up its all a learning process. There are some awesome tutorials for vray they helped me ouut so much when i was learning.
To you idiots who thinks you are clever for mentioning the viabality for a picture substitute. Let me show you some math. $Hi-rezcamera+$Lights+$5iPodNanos > $3Ds Max.
nice mirror on the screen and the body of the object great job i am just started with 3ds max an i am learning how to make some reactors i have made a domino fall already :D but on your next movie let them explode or let a rock fall down on the nice screen muwahahhah
to make the text on the back i Wrote it all on the "text" tool and used Extrude modifier... easy like that and than i aplied a white colored material with opacaccy set to 60%.

Why would you even make letter 3D and not just texture em?
And Play buttons should be just a texture too... and they are too blocky there is no 90degree angels on em in real life.. Keep working on it

It symbolizes how iPods are alone in a large empty world of DAPs with enormous storage.
Or how depressed you get when you see the ONE tiny scratch that ruins the whole screen.
