Each to his own, but if I had some 802Ds or 800Ds I'd be going straight to the McIntosh dealer - I'm not saying it's the best combination but it's what suits my ears and music.
i got a couple of B&W speakers from my grandpa ? thought they were some old vintage crap.. maybe i shouldnt sell them on garage sale.. are they any good ?
Holy heck, I really hope that the camera's mic is bad because that tweeter and midrange sound horrible all by themselves, ok almost all kinds of ONLY tweeter / midrange do sound horrible, but not all.
@OjStudios Holy heck i hope you lose access to internet. You expect to hear how speakers sound? They were filmed by bad camera microphone, then compressed to upload on the internet, then downloaded by you, processed by your cheap onboard sound card and now you hear the sound trough your cheap PC speakers or 10$ headphones. Yea...these B&W must sound horrible...
I've heard these speakers live and they're soft sounding and BTW I got a good soundcard, good equipment and all that, just check out my vids if you don't believe me. All that I meant is that some midranges and tweeters really sound horrible by themselves, but when all, tweet, mid and bass play at the same time, sound is awesome. That's how it just goes.
@OjStudios Well, it doesnt matter if tweeters or midrange sound bad on their own. They're not made to play music on their own. They're made to play together with other drivers in the speaker. Each of the drivers just covers a part of the frequency range.
Yes, I know. You don't have to tell me how the speaker works, alright? :) Anyhow, some drivers are pretty good that they from decent to very good on their own, like my Sonys 6,5" midwoofer. It doesn't even have any crossover and sounds pretty lively.
nice speakers but they need some hardcore amps really not a 60w per channel rotel. Im driving an old pair of dm580's with 2 NAD 2200 monoblocked which can output 400w cont per channel and much more if required. Thus i have full control over the speakers. I used to have a rotel 930ax running them before now and various intergreds. I had to upgrade due to how hungry the speakers were
The 800 series is the only B&W offering I would ever consider. Their other lines are outperformed by other speaker manufacturers in their respective price ranges.
I love B&W I have the Matrix 802. This guy needs a big amp Hes using a little integrated. And he needs to get the amps off the rug and on a stand at least. This is like running a Ferrari on donut spare tires. Youll never get the true performance out of them.
I'm running my Nautilus 804's with a RB-1080 each, (vertically bi-amped) run from a RC-1090 stereo pre-amp. I would agree that a single lowly RA-1062 is not doing the 802d's a service ....
Even my lower end 804's benefit heavily from the improved power output and mostly the stability the RB-1080's can serve up.
for fucks sake get some beefy power amps!!! You may as well have got some 602s in fact they would sound better! It looks like you sold your furniture to get those!
I always liked the midrange and bass on the Nautilus series. The Diamond tweeter has now brought the highs up to this higher standard. A very nice slice of high end sound at a somewhat less than stratospheric but still expensive price.
I don't care for B&W. Instead of hearing the music, you are listening to the "performance" of the speakers. Too hifi. But I wonder whether B&W speakers will sound better with active drive though; given that the steeper crossovers will decrease the overlap between the drivers and give a much better polar response.
@alexplot You made an interesting point, while there are some people that buy hi end systems to hear the music as pure as possible, some others (me included), like to hear the speakers perform at its best.
omg rotel on 802's? Try Bryston mono blocks or Electrocompaniet Nemo those 2 will absolutely blow your undies off. Haven't heard classe but I have heard the nemo and the 28b sst from bryston and crikey! undies gone......
just heard 2 days ago the 802s with NEMO amps! It sounds terribly good, clean and powerful; I will get these as well, not the cheapest amps out there, but 600w class A on 8 ohms are close to godliness !
Your speakers are way too good for amp/cd palyer (albeit that rotel is respectable but it is outclassed here) also no rack & unfurnished room means serious reflections & playin Dire Straits is doin them a diservice. I am willing to swap my speakers for yours so please leave your phone no & we shall talk cheers
my dad has Nautilus 801's i like 801's better he has a krell 300 amp driveing them and a dcs cd player plus a load of other stuff makeing it bettr its a amazing sound =p.
Well, very nice speakers. But with the D-Series, my advice would be to power them with two Rotel Mono-Amps (as you can use the 1080 in mono, too, buy another one). From my exp the 800s love to be powered like that. B&W and Rotel is an astonishing combination, no question. But as you know, the bi-wiring option would make it possible to hook them also up with two stereo-amps. One for the lows, one for the diamonds. Just try it, those speakers are worth spending even more (e.g. cables) :)
Personally I think that for the 8 series, and possibly the 7 series, the Classe setups are better, but that's just my opinion.
But in any case, B&W are the owners of Rotel, and they have matched the speakers to the electronics. B&W thinks that their own products are good enough. And besides, higher end doesn't necessarily make it sound better. McIntosh is extremely high-end, but isn't a good match for B&W.
Read the review in Stereophile about the Rotel RB 1080 powering the B&W's and see what they say.....Best Amp under 2 Grand......at low power, not as good as some Amps, but put a little Power into the B&W's and the Rotel RB 1080 sounded pretty Good....................
I heard these 802D in a sound store and they haven´t managed to convince me. I liked more B&W805 Matrix with one or two subwoofers. You save a lot of money and adjusting subwoofers properly the sound quality is much higher.
Not to say the 805S isn't brilliant, it is and that combo would destroy most full-range speakers of other brands.
But not the 802D. The 802D has the diamond tweeter which improves the treble and mid-range tremendously, opening up the soundstage and improving the overall balance of the speaker.
If you have actually listened to both speakers, you must be more deaf than Beethoven to think the 805S is superior.
First of all, the 805 Matrix is a 15 year-old speaker and has been out of production for almost ten years. If you are talking about current speakers, then it is the 805S, not the 805 Matrix.
I have both speakers (802D as front, 805S as surround) and you couldn't be more wrong, it's hilarious.
The 802D outperforms the 805S is every aspect, even if you match the 805S with the ASW855 subwoofer.
Awesome speakers although I like the 800d with their bigger woofers. But 802d are a good compromise if you can't afford the 800d. Really, really good tweeter. These b&ws would have to count as some of the most desirable box type speakers out there.
I would say, the 802D is connected worng to the AMP. The sound will be only available in Mono. The left speaker is completely connected to the B Terminal of the Rotel. Lol
I see! Im currently designing my own home theater and it wont be the typical boring square room like so many others. When im done I will either get the 802's, the Nautilus or something that's electrostatic to satisfy my audiophile ears. Right now my CG theater design contains the lovely 802's!
Biwiring doesnt actually work because the cables still end up being connected together in parallel since they meet up at the amp's terminal onto the same point. Its the same as running a single set of cables and leaving the metal strips connecting the binding posts on the speaker. Bi-Amping would work.

Great speakers, cheapie amplification. These speakers deserve a SimAudio W6 monoblocks or at least Parasound HALO monoblocks.
Not a Rotel integrated ! Larger B&W demand beefy amplification to shine. It is not to play loud, the effortless side opens up.
I use Dynaudio and SimAudio MOON, Totem and Bryston, Paradigm Signature and Anthem Statement. Soon Klipsch Palladium and Krell.
No cutting corners.
Speakers and electronics should match.

generally Rotel has good synergy with B&W's...but a 60 watt per channel BOTL Rotel integrated for 802D's does seem a bit odd doesn't it.
plus the lack of a stand, putting the speakers next to a glass door in a room that from what I see looks a bit...let's say "resonant"...
