@lordfextoc i think there's something going on with 15 yr. olds... 'cause i'm finding them everywhere liking the music i grew up with.. this is funny. wait... no, i guess it's not, hell, i was only 15 when this music was popular, so why not? some 15 yr olds obviously know good music when they hear it.
I heard this in 1968 at my cousins house - the reason they bought it was for the b-side 'Surfer Dan' (my cousins name is Dan) - however I bought 'battle of the bands' because I couldnt find it on any other Turtles album, I listened to the lyrics.... 'he's so ripped he cant see you go by'...... I swear they were smokin' a spliff at the time they recorded it ......listen for the coughing at the end !!! Was Johnny Barbato still with them when they recorded this ???
@diamantinadavina Yes Johnny Barbatta was still with the group then, he didn't leave until 1969 when they brought in John Siter drummer from Spanky and Our Gang for Turtle Soup album
most people don't know the hidden meaning of these two songs: "Elenore" and "Dan" were the original founding members of the Turtles (in 1947), and were, in actuality none other than John Lennon and Bert Rockefeller (Nelson Rockefeller's twin sister), both of whom would later found the Beatles (and later Wings and, later still, hardcore legends Black Flag). Bert can currently be seen in the audience of "Dancing With the Stars" while Lennon is now a reporter for Fox News 11 in Los Angeles.

Ahhhhhh,....now this is THE version of Elenore that I remember as a kid when my dad would play this in the early 70's!!! Ohhhh sweet!!!! Thank you for this video!!
I really want to hear this song in its entirety-- from what I understand it's sort of a spoof. The album is Battle of the Bands and they play several songs in different genres, Surf, British Invasion, etc. Elenore is supposed to be more than a little tongue in cheek, from what I understand. Also, the lyrics to Surfer Dan aren't exactly flattering-- he's high, he's dodging the draft (Uncle Sam is looking for him)... a very gritty image but a cool song that I just lurve.
Surfer Dan is a reach back to 1963-64 when the group was a surf band - "The Crossfires". Their song "Out of Control" has Nichols playing guitar every bit as good as Dick Dale
Your right...i was sure it got into the top 40...i know it got played a lot....wasnt there a rap type version of it as well...or sampled at least in the 80s or early 90s ?......
@YCSMusic yea most of us do and it's pretty sad lol. It's disappointing really that nothing that new or groundbreaking has been introduced into music over the course of the past decade. But I guess that's just why some of the kids in my generation have an appreciation for the original work and how it was intended to sound in the minds of the artists who actually wrote it
@Slyteradon Glad you like it, I was about 8 when this came out and only have vague memories of it. I still love lots of todays music though and have seen most top bands, I'm a huge fan of Foo Fighters and the best gig I went to last year was Green Day. Every decade has it's good and bad stuff I think.
@YCSMusic You're right there. I too am a fan of both Green day and Foo Fighters. It's just a shame that they're rare gems in what is considered talent these days. But oh well, I'm only 16. There's gonna be many more decades of music to come in my life. My only hope is that it returns to the standards of what it was in the past
Two truly great songs by a truly great group. Always ambivalent about Surfer Dan, as it was sort of a slam on the Beach Boys, but it was so well done that I can't help but think it was a tribute as well. Thanks for posting!!
@TheCanine2 Mark Volman of the Turtles was one of the Smile deciples and is seen in the photograph taken at LA airport. I think the turtles had respect for all fellow bands and specially the Beach Boys. So good to see all the comments. I can only repeat - Great Band!

Haha I didn't know that Elenore was the A side of this :) When I was lil, I always thought of Elenore as the B side.
Of course, I didn't know what they were doing with these songs when I was a kid, now I appreciate Elenore quite a lot more than I did then.
