  • damn, that surfer dan is cool!

  • This had to be one of the first uses of a Synthesizer in pop music.....very cool....

  • well, rock had a good 40 years...lol

  • I was 15. Hopping they are still enjoying life. jwb

  • ahh! i flipping love this song...i can't contain myself everytime this song comes on at work

  • I love Surfer Dan. I always played "B" sides, found some good ones over the years

  • love this song

  • i'm 15 years old and i love Elenore(i heard this at a movie ''radio rock'' and searched to find it cause i really liked it :P

  • @lordfextoc Glad you found it, thank you for listening.

  • @lordfextoc The movie is Pirate Radio. :)

  • @mancreep The Boat That Rocked.

  • @kittyburger000 Is that what they called in it the UK?

  • @lordfextoc i think there's something going on with 15 yr. olds... 'cause i'm finding them everywhere liking the music i grew up with.. this is funny. wait... no, i guess it's not, hell, i was only 15 when this music was popular, so why not? some 15 yr olds obviously know good music when they hear it.

  • I heard this in 1968 at my cousins house - the reason they bought it was for the b-side 'Surfer Dan' (my cousins name is Dan) - however I bought 'battle of the bands' because I couldnt find it on any other Turtles album, I listened to the lyrics.... 'he's so ripped he cant see you go by'...... I swear they were smokin' a spliff at the time they recorded it ......listen for the coughing at the end !!! Was Johnny Barbato still with them when they recorded this ???

  • @diamantinadavina Yes Johnny Barbatta was still with the group then, he didn't leave until 1969 when they brought in John Siter drummer from Spanky and Our Gang for Turtle Soup album

  • the best

  • most people don't know the hidden meaning of these two songs: "Elenore" and "Dan" were the original founding members of the Turtles (in 1947), and were, in actuality none other than John Lennon and Bert Rockefeller (Nelson Rockefeller's twin sister), both of whom would later found the Beatles (and later Wings and, later still, hardcore legends Black Flag). Bert can currently be seen in the audience of "Dancing With the Stars" while Lennon is now a reporter for Fox News 11 in Los Angeles.

  • @illharmonic wait what???

  • @illharmonic pfft, fox news...

  • check out the kursaal flyers singing "little does she know" for more brilliant rhyming.

  • Thanks for the high quality of this song, all the others out there sound like they used a tin-can microphone!

  • awsome song - for any generation.

  • It was intended as a cliched and ironic "silly love song" and yet it still comes across as somewhat sweet

  • 2:23 Second song starts :)

  • who would've thought to rhyme better with etc

  • @AtlanteBeatles they would, hurr durr.

  • Good song...I hear a little bit of influence off the song "people are strange"

  • this is a great band, one of the best i must say. would give the beatles a run for their money.

  • "Your looks intoxicate me / Even though your folks hate me" -- Ha! One of the best rock 'n' roll lyrics ever. :D

  • Love the turtles so much, keep playing DAT shit every dayymmmnn day

  • Awesome....these guys could sound like anyone they wanted to....the Beatles ...the Beach Boys....long live Howie and Mark!

  • WOW, what incredible harmonies...I cant wait to see them tomorrow night~

  • "Elenore" - music doesn't get much better than this.

  • Et cetera

  • I LOVEEE this song!

  • Ahhhhhh,....now this is THE version of Elenore that I remember as a kid when my dad would play this in the early 70's!!! Ohhhh sweet!!!! Thank you for this video!!

  • Elenore is soo sick. Check Evidence - "Things you do." It makes you apprisiate this song even more!

  • I really want to hear this song in its entirety-- from what I understand it's sort of a spoof. The album is Battle of the Bands and they play several songs in different genres, Surf, British Invasion, etc. Elenore is supposed to be more than a little tongue in cheek, from what I understand. Also, the lyrics to Surfer Dan aren't exactly flattering-- he's high, he's dodging the draft (Uncle Sam is looking for him)... a very gritty image but a cool song that I just lurve.

  • @EpicureMammon Doh! I meant "album in its entirely"-- sleep deprivation: don't do it.

  • Haha I didn't know that Elenore was the A side of this :) When I was lil, I always thought of Elenore as the B side.

Of course, I didn't know what they were doing with these songs when I was a kid, now I appreciate Elenore quite a lot more than I did then.

  • Surfer Dan is a reach back to 1963-64 when the group was a surf band - "The Crossfires". Their song "Out of Control" has Nichols playing guitar every bit as good as Dick Dale

  • haha :)

  • @sonnylegirl No one asked you to listen if you don't like it...

  • YCSMusic....You showed me was also a hit in the UK....albeit a small one

    Jim

  • Didn't reach the top 75 Jim so officially classed as a flop. You Showed Me did become a UK top 10 hit for Lightning Seeds in '97.

  • Your right...i was sure it got into the top 40...i know it got played a lot....wasnt there a rap type version of it as well...or sampled at least in the 80s or early 90s ?......

    Jim

  • Quite possibly Jim, lots of old stuff tends to get sampled these days...then the kids think it's something original ha!

  • @YCSMusic yea most of us do and it's pretty sad lol. It's disappointing really that nothing that new or groundbreaking has been introduced into music over the course of the past decade. But I guess that's just why some of the kids in my generation have an appreciation for the original work and how it was intended to sound in the minds of the artists who actually wrote it

  • @Slyteradon Glad you like it, I was about 8 when this came out and only have vague memories of it. I still love lots of todays music though and have seen most top bands, I'm a huge fan of Foo Fighters and the best gig I went to last year was Green Day. Every decade has it's good and bad stuff I think.

  • @YCSMusic You're right there. I too am a fan of both Green day and Foo Fighters. It's just a shame that they're rare gems in what is considered talent these days. But oh well, I'm only 16. There's gonna be many more decades of music to come in my life. My only hope is that it returns to the standards of what it was in the past

  • Beach Boys + The Turtles..LOVE CHILD = Surfer Dan! <3

  • awesome man...great band and two fantastic songs

  • Thanks Uber, couldn't agree more, great band!!

  • "pride and joy etc" i love that line

  • I grew up to this playing on a mono record player brings back happier days thanx

  • I agree, happier times without doubt - thanks!

  • I played it on 8track and now I have it on 331/3 among 4 other boxes of of 331/3s-CCR-Frigid Pink edtal

  • Two truly great songs by a truly great group. Always ambivalent about Surfer Dan, as it was sort of a slam on the Beach Boys, but it was so well done that I can't help but think it was a tribute as well. Thanks for posting!!

  • Many thanks, glad you liked these great songs.

  • @TheCanine2 Mark Volman of the Turtles was one of the Smile deciples and is seen in the photograph taken at LA airport. I think the turtles had respect for all fellow bands and specially the Beach Boys. So good to see all the comments. I can only repeat - Great Band!

  • Surfer Dan is one of my favorite Turtles song!!!!

  • my music teacher played keyboards on this record!

  • That you utilized sofware to edit the video am left to you cool. tanks men.

  • Love the Turtles. Accidently came across them and bought a CD. Thanks for posting.

  • Whoops just found this now, I missed out on a load of your stuff, your catalogue is growing faster than I thought, 5* & fav'd. thanks Steve

  • hahaha.. put in a dispute to get it back.
