Joker was actually testing the Batman on his heroism. He himself expected Batman to fail the test, but he probably didn't know himself.

IF Batman was a true hero and did what was best for Gotham, he would have got his reward; the girl he loves.

IF Batman turned out to be just a mere "man" and a "freak" he would lose everything. The girl and his dignity as the Gotham's "guardian."

However in the end, it's a lose-lose game he presented to Bat.

Check out the joker facial expression the first time batman punches him on the floor.,Heath makes the blow's look so authentic;and that last blow when he just knows batman is at the boilpoint and laughs right in his face.,thats epic psychosis,damn i dont envy Nolan too have too make a follow up of this one;though i believe he can and will...R.I.P. I can't see them, if they do a third movie, having an actor play the Joker after Heath. It would be anticlimax. The most that I think they could do is possibly show a silohuette in a cell in Arkham and maybe have somebody emulate the laugh. Outside of that, they'd risk the proverbial shit hitting the fan by recasting someone for a character that an actor who has since died played.
