gaijin otakus are the most anoying i think. but bless them, they are a sad subculture living out a pale imitation of another countries' sad subculture
I'm white but I have lived in South Florida my whole life and the majority here is Hispanic. I have always been in the minority so I don't know what its like to be the majority. The word gaijin doesn't really bother me and if you think about it Japanese people can never be apart of the gaijin "club" now can they? Japan isn't like America. Its only to be expected that you can never truly be Japanese.
@schizophrenicpirate It's complicated - I did a long blog "it ain't easy being Japanese" once - basically, you can be Japanese to all your inner circle of family and friends, and if you try and really want it, even with coworkers and associates. Outside of that, with strangers, there are limits, but in Japan, even among Japanese, people don't really bother too much worrying about the other 120million, so long as everyone just follows the rules and doesn't make trouble.
I am Jamaican, never been to Japan, but with the little knowledg I have of Japanese, I fing the word gaijin offensive, so I understand how many people feel, especially when someone is born in Japan - maybe Japanese mixed with something elso or just of foreign decent - and that person is still referred to as gaijin... that can be s hard to deal with, it is simply discrimination!
@rapjigga1 Well, there's two points to that - one, in Jamaica, do you not have terms to refer to different races, or foreigners? And do people not make those assessments superficially too? Add to that that less than 2% of the country is foreign nationality, less than 0.1% is racially non-Asian... You can't get angry at people for saying "hey, a gaijin". Other point is that most of the "discrimination" is positive - they treat you better for being thought of as a foreigner. Not always, but mostly
@Hikosaemon I understand your point. In fact, I should have made my point more clear. I am aware of the fact that many Japanese do not use the term "gaijin" maliciously. Though there are still those who do. It is only when the term is used malicously that I take offence to it. In Jamaica, or any country, there will always be those who refer to foreigners in a good or bad manner, but when it is malicious, that it's a problem - though there is far less of this problem in Jamaica today.
Gaijin that hate the word Gaijin are the worst. I don't even live in Japan & it annoys me. People that have never been to Japan complain about it too -_- It's like "live in a minority's shoes for one day" then probably it wouldn't be such a surprise for you. You guys were completely correct :)~
@69ulrika I know you mean! I am a friendly person in my own country as well as in Japan. I have never seen my own people act in such an appalling way. I have yet to meet another foreigner who is not arrogant and who doesn't act like they think she/he is a snowflake. It is a reflection of poor character, and I suppose their own countries are better off without them.
Before you continue to read this comment, please keep in mind that just because I disagree with something you say it doesn't mean I don't like you and it doesn't mean I don't respect your opinion. But there is enough Gaijin on Gaijin hate already. There is no Gaijin more uzai than one who compares herself/himself to and judges other gaijin. We are all foreigners and living in a foreign country is difficult (regardless of your reasons for coming). It may be cheesy but focus on your own life.
@IbarakiStyle I know, and you're right - Victor was just tired of being the bad guy all the time and wanted to get me to troll a bit. And don't worry, I THRIVE on criticism ;)
What annoys me, I always seem to meet foreigners who stay in the same circle and keep themselves away from the culture. Some complained about having to learn Japanese & the culture. I'm thinking to myself " Why did you come to Japan in the first place?".
Gaijins hate other gaijins in Japan because many a gaijin think that it is his Japan, and he doesn't want to share it with rivals. Specifically, the want to horde the admiration from women, the favorable treatment, and unique experiences, the unique knowledge of the language and culture. That's why they get pissed off when they see other gaijin. And it's that fucking simple, but we can pretend it's tremendously complex.
What bugs me about the word "gaijin" is how loosely the term is used. Two of my closest friends are half Japanese, half white but they are constantly referred to as "gaijin" even though they were born in Japan and can't speak much English. That "gaijin" vs "nihonjin" mentality creates a wall between those who look foreign and those who look Japanese. Even if you spend most of your life in Japan, its like Japan is a club you can never quite fit into because your title will always be 'gaijin'.
@chchchchill I think a good way to look at it is as an equivalent to "gay". If people know nothing about a person other than they are gay, that might be how they define them, and if the judging person is not gay, then that will be a definition in opposition. However, the more you get to know a gay person, the less you look at them simply as gay, and more for their personal characteristics. Gaijin is like this. I AM a gaijin - it's cool. The more people know me, the less they focus on it.
Actually, I'm reading your comment back now - the half thing is of course complicated (my son is half also of course). This is mostly an issue for kids, and mostly outside of Tokyo (which is the only close to cosmopolitan part of Japan, 1 in 5 newborns here now have foreign parents). I've talked about this with parents outside of Tokyo - most accept that kids are just mean and if they don't bully about being half, it will be for being fat, or bad at sports. You can't change your life to shield
@chchchchill I do have half Japanese friends who had some bad experiences growing up in small towns around Japan and often ended up moving abroad. However, I also have many half Japanese friends - most agree that the appearance of being half goes from being a liability, to an enormous asset about half way through junior high. Half people as young adults tend to be MORE popular. The different appearance is unavoidable, but thanks to high foreign birthrates, this happens less in Tokyo at least.
this was fun to hear but reading comments i'm kind of discouraged... ):
I really want to go to japan one day; but i'm worried, because i'm a African american female and i'm very sensitive, i don't think i could handle constant racism.
especially since i've never really had to; and i the only person i know who has been to japan is a japanese male who acts like there are no flaws.
Can anyone tell me what to expect? Or any suggestions or anything??
i enjoyed my gaijin status when i lived in kyushu. you get alot of attention just for existing. the japanese are tolerant if you make a faux pas because, you're a gaijin and don't know any better. not that i went out of my way to be obnoxious. for all the whiners who don't like to be considered gaijin, my response is "you're doing it wrong." use your gaijin status to your advantage.
@karnisov That's fine for the first few while, but for me, after a while, I got tired of having to listen to people talk about the fact that I'm Gaijin before I can start a decent conversation with anyone. Just my experience.
I'm an American of mixed race living in Japan. Your commentary about white people who come to Japan and whine about how "racist" Japan is are right on the money. If they had to walk for a day in the shoes of a Japanese person living in their home country, (or even of an Asian American who was born and raised there), they'd realize what racism is and how good they have it here in Japan. If anything they're put on a pedestal.
@jasminetea6161 I disagree with that. Asian's rarely experience racism in Canada. Walking down the street in Japan, I hear several "gaijin" whispers wherever I go, most are not negative comments but still, sometimes I don't want the attention. Mainly, Asians in Canada just fit right in. My boyfriend is a Japanese who lived in Canada for a year and he was expecting to be treated as an outsider and was surprised when people treated him normally.
People that are fully bilingual (like you guys) that boast and think they are the best. Usually they don't even speak perfect Japanese (heck, I don't, and I'm half! I find speaking politely really hard because I've never lived in japan!)
I like modest gaijin who respect the Japanese.
I also don't like gaijin who associate japan with hentai and whaling
This might sound harsh and rude, but I must say many English speakers in non-English-speaking foreign countries are generally the fallen and degenerate wretches.
As for foreigners wanting a wise Japanese steady for real, especially for those from English-speaking immigrant countries, they should go back to their countries and look for a Nikkei guy or girl. It's dreadfully overoptimistic that they can get any without acquiring language, culture, and tradition in a place of sojourn.
I'm a white female living in Japan at the moment, I've only been here two weeks and I've already had interest from Japanese and western men since being here.
I think it is down to the mentality of each individual person, like you said.
Some women are just not interested in Japanese men, I personally find them attractive (not all) and will not limit myself whilst being here.
I would never claim to know 'everything' about anything, even my home country, and people like that annoy me too.
I don't think there are many things to hate *foreigners specifically* for.
I do dislike people being loud and vulgar because they think the people around them can't understand what they are saying (especially if I'm eating).
Because of bias and pride, I may also dislike some differences between East and West Japan but telling me "you can always leave" doesn't really work; I'd love to move back to Western Japan, but can't now and think it's great experience to live in a different "Japan"
I am 23 year old black man and have been living in Japan for about 2 years now. I will say that me being a 黒人 and living as a 普通の社会人is hard. However,I cant say that there is a particular "annoying 外人". Solely because where ever you came from or whatever background you have is going to insinuate a different viewpoint on what you call annoying. i respect Japanese culture, but i will never change who i am to fit into a society. The worst 外人 in my opinion are people who try to be JAPANESE
Your experience would be much different if you were a "loveless woman." Or, say, black. Or, Heaven bless, a black woman. I have an intelligent, open, hard working friend fluent in Osakaben who lived in Japan for about 6 years, doing everything she could to make it work, but was completely beaten down by the society. Not to mention sexual harassment, but she was exploited at work and socially isolated, to say the least. She found it common experience. So, white male gaijin are most annoying.
@Shufei LOL truthfully, I also find white-male gaijin the most annoying. Maaaainly because many of them are asian fetish freaks who think they can get any girl because they are white.
Also, one of my mom's friends is on-and-off on duty in the Air Force. He was stationed on Yokota Air Base. He told me that when he got there, simply because he has a "diplomat passport" he shouldn't have been interviewed before being allowed in. I don't like to assume, but the way he was talking, it sounded like he spend most of his time on base (for a total of a few months).
He told me that the Japanese treat black people worse than the plantation owners did. WTF? I dunno what people think.
To me, the worst gaijins are the ones who are so high and mighty with their opinions about Japan in their own goddamn country.
I'm in high school, and people ask me all the time where I want to study. Whenever I do tell the truth, they spend their time telling me what they think Japan is like, and reasons not to even vacation there (based on misinformation and/or bias). Not that I know anything either.
It's not in my nature to retaliate, but I just wanna sucker-punch some of them. You know? :|
I think your casual approach to discussing contemporary social issues in the Japan-side group of Westerners is very entertaining. It's refreshing not to hear the bickering that often goes with people sharing their views about foreigners in Tokyo.
lol this was incredible and funy and super informative, and just overall AWESOME! Victor on "loveless women" ha ha ha we love you Victor! but yes, I would agree on the dating thing^^
and never been to Japan but when I hear "I've been here for X number of years so I know" arghhh >.<
The ones who complaints about almost everything...and thinks that everyone hates her/him. Of course there is a good and bad side in everyone and everywhere, but why complain and do nothing?Either learn how to sway or run away!!
people who spit out Gaijin bothers them. as we don't mean nothing specific reasons besides we need to make sure what sort of status they got. come by travellers visa ?a student ?any expiration?I am truly start bothering ppl. who keep complains anything about Japan. that's just an abusement or what.
About 愛のない白人の女, some of them do complain a whole lot about foreign guys dating Japanese women. I think many are open to dating Japanese men, but because of the difference in gender roles, it`s harder for Western women to date Japanese. Body size is also a big issue that can be connected to the gender roles one. But I think a lot of the complaining comes off like venting out personal frustrations.
I've visited Japan 5 times so far and the other day my mother said I know everything about Japan by now.Told her straight out "Not even CLOSE to knowing everything." LOL. I hate gaijins that are rude or loud, especially when they've been drinking. Makes me want to beat the piss out of them for making Japanese folks look at my like I'm just like them.
@perdomot Seen plenty of Drunk Japanese being very loud, the only difference is that an entire army of coworkers around him try to calm him down (without any success of course) I find it hilarious and IMHO it's typically Japanese social behavior.
The problem with drunk foreigners in Japan is that the are ALL drunk and just making a mess out of everything, but during my stays in Japan I have never witnessed that.
@bakasheru I haven't seen in person myself but too many places have the "No Foreigners" sign out because some folks couldn't control themselves and I end up paying the price for them. Japanese are already very cautious about outsiders and this kind of stuff just makes things worse.

concerning the lonely gaijin women thing: I always thought that the social gender images between Japan and many other western countries are incompatible. But it's gonna change: I meet more and more Japanese men who don't want to work 80h a week until they die.
The guy, on the left-side, seem to be really nice guy. I like the way of his talking too. Im a japanese n living in US for more than 1 year n half n so far. I wanna mention that we usually don't discriminate u guys, however some of them do. Im also the one who is discriminated by them coule of times before, but I really don't care about it. I'd rather feel happy because of some gaijin like u guys. This video brought me energies to study En !!

Gaijin who think they are better than others because of their Japanese ability or length of stay. Gaijin who are TOO SUPERIOR to hang out with other gaijin and only hang out with Japanese people. Like wut.
I recall an old blog I read, forget who, but when he went out with his Japanese friends they thought him fun and humorous. I forget what the kanji was, but he translated what they called him as Crazy Gaijin. He didn't mind at all.
If you print up shirts that say "Crazy Gaijin. And proud of it!" I'd buy one. :-)
Lots of good points! When I was in Japan it was only for 9 days, but I will say I learned more about Japan in those 9 days, than I have in the many years of reading about Japan (of course I still have MUCH to learn). I live in Oklahoma and I hear many racist things on the Japanese. My brother gets a lot of crap because his wife is from China. Makes me sad :(
For a foreign national in America, the most common, and least liked foreigner (to me) is the one who goes to any country in the world and expects it to be "same as home". They are neither willing to, nor putting in any effort, to learning about the new place they are calling home. Expectations without planning lead to disaster. They seem to be oblivious that looks aside, different countries and people have different customs / characteristics / ideologies, etc. Not everything is "same as home".
ooh that was amusing..I think its funny my fellow Caucasian women there won't date asian men, I mean come on girls you are in Japan! I'd date one if they were as hot and cute(read as funny) as ahem.....Flake..
I'm totally cool with if I came there I'd be called gaijin as long as I didn't feel shunned with it.
On my bucket list is a trip there to scuba dive off the coast of Yokaguna island...sigh not happening anytime soon!
@xNikkaX3 There are a lot of negative, borderline racist stereotypes that go round about Japanese guys, and I guess people have their own ideals about what kind of guy they want to date. Honestly, I never dated, anyone but blondes until I was in college. Somewhere along the line though, people do have to grow up and realize that relationships tend to work based on more than preconceptions. I think the fact that girls who do date Japanese are past that is part of why they work out so well
The gaijins that piss me off are the ones who stop people in the street to take pictures of you. All I want to do is sit there emailing and someone is like "omg cute girl take a pic with me making the peace sign so I can show my friends! OMG where is your lolita maid outfit, random manga inspired school girl outfit, twintails hair, and saying kawaiidesu~"
GO FUCK YOURSELF. If I ever get that again I am stabbing these fucking people. Stop fucking doing that. Same when people see a Geisha STOP IT
@topcat4eva That was me putting the characters in - just to avoid it getting flagged automatically. All the captions are made by myself manually (it is a pain to do, but I do it all for love)
wow i can't imagine why girls would come here if they only wanted to date foreigners '_' i think it's hard enough to have a serious relationship here for girls without limiting your options like that O_O (not that i'm an expert but tbh most Japanese guys don't seem interested in serious relationships with gaijin gals).
i agree with you guys a lot ^-^ really love these Japanese episodes, thank you for making more!!! (didn't show in my sub box *shakes fist at youtube* T_T)
@mimei Actually, I feel a bit bad about how that was phrased - I think it is true that there are a lot of gaijin girls who find it hard to find love here for various reasons, even when they are open to dating Japanese guys. I have friends like that, and it's cool - it's the ones who turn bitter and angry about it all... I've only met a few, but they were scar-ey, and pretty nasty putting down "loser" gaijin guys who can't get "real" women, and their j-girlfriends. Very small minority however
@mimei Yeah, a lot of people are saying it didn't show up in people's feeds/subs. I think it has to do with the posting function - it still seems to be super-buggy. Hopefully people will discover it through SNS posts - thanks for the tweet btw :)
I really like this show, the intro music is especially good ;)
The word gaijin doesn't offend me personally but I think that it has all to do with the context it's being used in, even though it may not be a racist word right now that does not mean it can't be a racist word ten years from now. But I believe that as long as foreigners in Japan try to integrate or at least show some respect and a little knowledge of Japanese culture everything will be just fine.
@KeroKeroFFVII He does a lot of campaigning in Japanese by the way - he produces a lot of Japanese language literature for new arrivals to use - he's very diligent about that to his credit. But I think he also realizes that his main base of support are predominantly people who have a similar background and set of values to him, who are for the most part English speaking westerners. I've got no issue at all with his use of language - becoming a Japanese citizen isn't easy.
@KeroKeroFFVII On a personal level, I feel terrible for Arudou, as I do any divorced loving Dad in Japan who basically loses all access to their kids upon divorce. I don't know all the facts and its his private business, but I'm sure issues in his personal life injected some venom into his campaigns - while I can be sympathetic with the causes of his suffering, calling loudly for an international boycott of Japan after the quake was the final straw for me with his shenanigans.
Wow, Hiko I didn't know he called for a boycott! I don't agree with boycotting Japan at all. That's a horrible thing to do. It's weird because I read his blog a few times a week and I didn't see mention of that. I will look for it though. I am not a fan of his recent work but his essays on life in Japan that he had written years ago are pretty good.
You're right his personal life is just that; his personal life. But I do believe it had an impact on his attitude towards Japan/日本社会
If I felt sorry for every guy who got divorced... wow! But I don't know his situation so I can't really say anything. But I think any family torn apart is sad... if they're sad. But who is to say it's not the best thing for them. And they decided, right? Lots of families stay together because of the children.
My beef with Arudo is that he's built his whole existence here in Japan.

Generally speaking the thing I find most intolerable is intolerance :P It was interesting to hear Hikosaemon say that the Gaijin he perhaps most disliked is himself 10 years ago. As soon as we start concentrating on other peoples faults to much we miss our own. That being said I think the one of the worst traits someone can have in any foreign country is close-mindedness. Not only is it a drain on others but it will also limit your own experience.
@indoril007 Very true and very well said. Another truth I've learned over time here is that everyone really does go through pretty dramatic phases of adjustment and adaptation to Japan, and like small kids, the most extreme and later most embarrassing phases tend to be the early ones. I've gone from being obnoxious, to finding others obnoxious, to self realization and loathing, to more or less mellowing out over time. But yeah, without tolerance, nothing ever starts. Good comment.
I just thought I'd boast that I didn't need captions on to understand. ;]
Gaijins I cannot stand;
Animé/Otaku Gaijins. There's no point coming to a country to obsess about something you can obsess about in your own country.
Know-it-all Gaijins. No one can know everything about Japan. Hell, there are Japanese people who don't know everything. There's a certain YouTube female who is like this. *AHEMEMILY
Gaijins who come to Japan for the soul purpose of having sex. Believe me I know the odd few..
@MyKremlinDusk i am an otaku, i went to japan because we love manga and anime. if i love the video games, manga, and people why the fuck wouldn't i live there. stop being so judgement till about others. Arigatou
@MyKremlinDusk As someone who really came to live in Japan before the otaku thing took off abroad, I still look on with wonder (probably with a similar perspective to many Japanese) at the phenomenon. I think it's great that there are so many people in America and elsewhere who are so into Japanese culture, even if only one very narrow aspect of it. There again, I really don't know or understand very much at all of the people in this boom
i.) Gaijins who know English but don't bother speaking English and pretend they're being Japanese in front of other gaijins that know little to none of Japanese (show-offs).
ii.) Gaijins with rude behaviour in public
and iii. is something that I'm not against...just that it annoys me greatly...yet its understandable since language is the factor...
iii.)Gaijins that don't speak English = for its hard to communicate :P

外から来た人ってのは遠路遥遥ようきたなってイメージで使ってるよ。外人「さん」って言うし。
日本人からいうと、日本に嫁に来た外人さんが、夫が麺をすすって食うのを禁止していたり、

Even if you spend most of your life in Japan, its like Japan is a club you can never quite fit into because your title will always be 'gaijin'.
chchchchill 2 months ago
@chchchchill I think a good way to look at it is as an equivalent to "gay". If people know nothing about a person other than they are gay, that might be how they define them, and if the judging person is not gay, then that will be a definition in opposition. However, the more you get to know a gay person, the less you look at them simply as gay, and more for their personal characteristics. Gaijin is like this. I AM a gaijin - it's cool. The more people know me, the less they focus on it.
Hikosaemon 2 months ago
Actually, I'm reading your comment back now - the half thing is of course complicated (my son is half also of course). This is mostly an issue for kids, and mostly outside of Tokyo (which is the only close to cosmopolitan part of Japan, 1 in 5 newborns here now have foreign parents). I've talked about this with parents outside of Tokyo - most accept that kids are just mean and if they don't bully about being half, it will be for being fat, or bad at sports. You can't change your life to shield
Hikosaemon 2 months ago
@chchchchill I do have half Japanese friends who had some bad experiences growing up in small towns around Japan and often ended up moving abroad. However, I also have many half Japanese friends - most agree that the appearance of being half goes from being a liability, to an enormous asset about half way through junior high. Half people as young adults tend to be MORE popular. The different appearance is unavoidable, but thanks to high foreign birthrates, this happens less in Tokyo at least.

Or any suggestions or anything??
yoruichisempai 3 months ago
i enjoyed my gaijin status when i lived in kyushu. you get alot of attention just for existing. the japanese are tolerant if you make a faux pas because, you're a gaijin and don't know any better. not that i went out of my way to be obnoxious. for all the whiners who don't like to be considered gaijin, my response is "you're doing it wrong." use your gaijin status to your advantage.

If anything they're put on a pedestal.
jasminetea6161 3 months ago

Be real!

You know? :|

「外人」という言葉も日本では差別として使ってるわけではなくうまく言えませんが区別として使ってる人が多いので、本当に海外の人に差別と思われてしまい日本人として外人と使うってる人を見ると謝りたい気持ちでいっぱいになります。。

@perdomot Seen plenty of Drunk Japanese being very loud, the only difference is that an entire army of coworkers around him try to calm him down (without any success of course) I find it hilarious and IMHO it's typically Japanese social behavior.

@mr2wari Our intro music ROCKS :)

私は外人"gaijin"ではなく内人"naijin"になりたいとスピーチしてたヒトが居たな。I know a guy who has spoken "I want to be a naijin, not a gaijin".

@Hikosaemon

@KeroKeroFFVII

He built his whole existence on being negative and looking to get offended at every little thing.

@Hikosaemon Where did you get them from? I want one.

Not only is it a drain on others but it will also limit your own experience.
indoril007 5 months ago
@indoril007 Very true and very well said. Another truth I've learned over time here is that everyone really does go through pretty dramatic phases of adjustment and adaptation to Japan, and like small kids, the most extreme and later most embarrassing phases tend to be the early ones. I've gone from being obnoxious, to finding others obnoxious, to self realization and loathing, to more or less mellowing out over time. But yeah, without tolerance, nothing ever starts. Good comment.

I just thought I'd boast that I didn't need captions on to understand. ;]
Gaijins I cannot stand;

Arigatou
ADOG51412 5 months ago
@MyKremlinDusk As someone who really came to live in Japan before the otaku thing took off abroad, I still look on with wonder (probably with a similar perspective to many Japanese) at the phenomenon. I think it's great that there are so many people in America and elsewhere who are so into Japanese culture, even if only one very narrow aspect of it. There again, I really don't know or understand very much at all of the people in this boom

Ok...gaijins I can't stand...viz.
i.) Gaijins who know English but don't bother speaking English and pretend they're being Japanese in front of other gaijins that know little to none of Japanese (show-offs).
ii.) Gaijins with rude behaviour in public
and iii. is something that I'm not against...just that it annoys me greatly...yet its understandable since language is the factor...
iii.)Gaijins that don't speak English = for its hard to communicate :P
