If they released documents admitting this knowledge, then surely they are available publicly. I have searched for them myself, and have not been able to find anything, only the accusations relating to them.

Today factor VIII is made with recombinant DNA tech. So it isn't coming from people, and it would take a deliberate act to contaminate it with HIV.

In the late 70's & early 80's, that tech didn't exist. They took blood from donors, and isolated the factor VIII to give to haemophiliacs. This was the same period that HIV was coming to light, and screening tests did not exist.

There is a question here of knowledge and intent.

Perhaps I am influenced by the hysterical tone of fox news, but I was in medical school back then. There was a lot we didn't know about AIDS in 1982-1984. We did some things back then that seem silly by today's standards (head to toe space suits make an impression). But we didn't know what we were dealing with, and it was killing people horribly.

Given that the first commercial HIV screening test was available in 1985, I don't really know how they could have been screening for HIV before that time.

I am sorry, I understand this is a highly charged emotional issue. But knowing the history of HIV diagnosis, I am not convinced that they had the MEANS to screen before 85. So I am not convinced that they had the knowledge that the products were contaminated, much less the intent to distribute bad products.

These allegations are true. My father was a hemophiliac who contracted the HIV virus from contaminated factor viii he received after knee surgery in 1983. He died from AIDS in 1994. My mother was vice president of the national hemophilia/hiv peer association from 1992-1994 and did extensive research and utilized the freedom of information act to gain access to Bayer's internal memos proving that they knew the product was contaminated and continued to sell it any way. FDA enforces thousands of petty and worthless regulations but does nothing about real dangers. If we abolished the FDA could private organizations take up the slack and warn us about dangerous drugs? How about Underwriters Laboratories, which now tests electrical appliances? Bottom line: almost all consumer electrical appliances have UL certification, even though it is voluntary. Could a similar system for drugs be any worse than FDA?
