The reason why this ova and the next one are so different is because a lot of the scenes that are " the future" are actually the present, this ova takes place about 5-8 years after the original tv. series ended... so rather than kenshin being about 30 he is now 35-38 years of age.

This OVA is terrible!! Totally destroyed the image i had of Kenshin. I thought Kenshin fought and lead a huge war of japan or something when he was hitokiri but instead he's just some small assasin. The OVA made him look so pathetic!!

but, you see, the story wasnt supposed to be continued ... so its "happily ever after" template

you cant keep people intense forever, there was nothing left to build intensity on after tomoe died , he was avenged , and rejoined comrades, so they created a slow mellow story for children , thats a smooth solution

Well, I'm a japanese and i'm glad many people watch this series, though I must say the subtitle doesn't have a good quality... Not only it omits some important line but also it makes up lines which the characters never said. Many misunderstanding of words and background.

And yes, to make this OVA more dramatic, they changed a bit of the history. Kaoru attacking Kenshin in the middle of the night, and then him crashing through a fence with pinwheel eyes and the dazed "ORO" would sort of kill the mood, I would think.
