So is reverse "out" or not? If its not, your lucky its not considering you idiots were pulling in reverse. Never do that, the gears do not mesh the same way in reverse and are much weaker, always a BAD idea! In addition, the front axle/steering system should never be put under that kind of load compared to the much stronger rear axle. Learn how to drive a truck before going off road or attempting any kind of recovery.
no it wasnt. and reverse was the only way to pull it out, you couldnt do anything to turn around because it was a rental.
