The deficit is not Bush's (or the republican party's) fault. We were attacked fiercely, and we had no choice but to go to war.
War is expensive. I submit Bush made bad choices in the war, but there was NO way to avoid this deficit. No way at all.
We had the choice of NOT going to war in Iraq. We needed to focus on Afghanistan and Pakistan. Even if I conceded, for this comment's sake, that a deficit was inevitable, it would not have been as high (we would have had a lot of allies in Afghanistan that would disbursed a lot of treasure and blood to help us out).
I understand, and that's exactly what I'm saying. War in Iraq was a bad choice. The Afghanistan/Pakistan areas should have been the targets.
But both are wars. War was inevitable, and so was a deficit.
Secondly, it's impossible to say whether the deficit would have been higher or lower; but in any case, going from from ANY surplus to ANY deficit, no matter the size of the gap, would prompt responses like BlackSatinQueen's above, and my point stands.

But both are wars. War was inevitable, and so was a deficit.
Secondly, it's impossible to say whether the deficit would have been higher or lower; but in any case, going from from ANY surplus to ANY deficit, no matter the size of the gap, would prompt responses like BlackSatinQueen's above, and my point stands.
