Dunkels have a distinctive malty flavour that comes from a special brewing technique called decoction mashing. Most commonly, dunkel beers are dark lagers, but the term is also used to refer to dark wheat beers such as Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse Dunkel. Dunkel weizen is another term used to refer to dark wheat beers, which are fruity and sweet with more dark, roasted malts than their lighter counterpart, the hefeweizen.GOD YOU BURP TWO TIMES.
Americans...your beer tastes like a glas of old pee. We got the best beer in the world! Thats why we vote for Kanzler Merkel. She looks so sexy when i have drunk 29 bottles of franziskaner ;)
The Hefe-Weisse is a great great beer, absolutely love it, but the Franziskaner Kristalklar just lacks in character. Give it a go, see what you think!
HAHA, so funny :) Make me smile. Well nice review. I just had one Franziskaner, 0.5 lt or 16.9 U.S. fl oz from a can. We have the same as yours here in Denmark, but I just buyd one in a can. It really is something special. I do like it very much. No doubt. Thank you and God bless you.
Franziskaner is the best beer in the world. I've tried all the contenders and all the best hefeweizens and best belgian trappist beers but none compare to Franziskaner.
Love hefe's and Franzy is one of my all time favorites. Others that are similar in quality are Sierra Nevada's Kellerweiss, Mothership Wit, and the Summertime Wheat from Rahr and Sons (of Fort Worth Texas). Awesome glassware too!
Hey Joe D., check your local liquor/beer stores and look for a box set from Weihenstephan that will have 5 bottles of their various beers plus a Weinhenstephan glass. I picked up a box set for less than $20.00. It came with a bottle of Original, Korbinian Doppelbock, Krystal Weiss, Hefe Weiss, and Dunkel Hefe Weiss and the big glass. Prost my friend.
This dude cracks me up. I don't always agree with him but he reviews with a good spirit and true love of brew. For me, Franziskaner is an B+ to an A- depending on mood and the weather. Very good beer. Trader Joe's has it at a good price.
by the way. there is no need to doubt that this beer (and all other german beers aswell) are brewed according to the german purity law (Reinheitsgebot) of 1516. any german beer must meet the standard. u can look it up anywhere.
Very nice beer the answer is to just slug it and don't baby the bottle when you drink it .. hit it like your thirsty that mixes it all up .. I really liked this beer and give it an A - as well .. good stuff .
Drinking my first one as we a speak! The first taste of it is really strong, Different I must say! But the flavor grows after the first sip. Overall not a bad beer!!!!
Very well done Review greetings from germany, I'm more firm with the darker german beers like Diebels Alt(not the coke flavoured Dimix), and other kinds of german blackbeer but Franziskaner has ever been my favourite Weißbier/Wheatbear.
Thanks for letting me know about my glasses. But I have my original glasses from 20 years ago somewhere that I would loved to shown everyone but couldn't find them.
Hey, Ok, damn, you got me... ;-) POPULAR GERMAN BEER MIX DRINKS: Cola Weizen aka dirty Weizen: pour half of the Hefe Weizen into a Weizen glass and fill it up with Coke (or Pepsi..) tastes better than it sounds! Banana Weizen: pour half of the Hefe Weizen into a Weizen glass and fill it up with 'Banana Juice' (from bottle) I never tasted that one and probably never will.. younger people like these kind of drinks, esp. the 'Cola Weizen' you can order them in almost every pub here in Bavaria
Do I remember things correctly. When I was over there I thought they mixed wheat beers with soda (coke, sprite,etc.). Am I nuts or does that really happen?
This is probably one of my top 5 beers! The "Old Chicago" has it on tap on a regular basis, and it's AMAZING! Thanks for reviewing "FRANZ-is-Conner." :)
I have had this one and liked it. It is available here on the East Coast. I don't know if it differs much from the original German beer like you sampled.
Franziskaner is a quite good german Hefeweizen , i prefer the Dunkel version though, but look forward to the Schneider Weisse Original, that is AWSOME!! Its been called, the champaign of Hefeweizen's here in Europe, but great review as always!! Cheers!
I tried this beer last fall, never had it since, but i really remember the taste, and what first came to mind when i tasted it. My buddy didnt get the taste, so im glad im not the only one that says this tasted banana! Overall a great beer 5 star review
Not for a while. My camera is built in my iMac so once I upgrade to a newer one then they have widescreen. Then I feel sorry for all of you that will have to see a even bigger picture of my ugly mug. Ha-ha.
I've noticed alot of german beers abide by that purity law, like the beer i tried today for instance: Holsten festbock, it was pretty decent. I'm not a big fan of wheat beers but great review anyway as always.
1st off because of you ,now I'm doing the smoke thing. 2nd love the glass. On the Reinheitsgebot purity law, the only ingredients that could be used in the production of beer were water, barley, and hops. The Reinheitsgebot is no longer part of German law. Some German brewery's still abide by it. And another thing I need to turn my speakers down that last No Charge BURB, was 2 thumbs up loud. PROST!
I love Franziskaner. It's good in a bottle, but I think it's ridiculously better from a tap. Probably for the same reason it tasted better once you mixed it. Definite two thumbs up.
You're lucky you got a brown bottle from Germany. The green bottles suck because they let in too much light and skunk up the beer. When I drank this it was skunky and most of the yeast stuck to the bottom of the bottle.
Fruit should never be put into beer. It just masks the bad flavor (i.e. Corona, Blue Moon). A good beer doesn't need it.
I do that too. taste with and without sediment. most do taste better with sediment. One of my favorites is and American wheat beer. Blue Star. But I forget the brewer.they also have a good stout.
Haha well tell your wife thanks for saying that. I just concider myself a regular guy that loves beer. I post my opinions on here for viewers to watch. And I am so thankful that people tune in an watch.

dmi3011 2 years ago
Hey,
btw. that glass is DEFINITELY a Weizen glass, it's even printed on it!
That 'Aventinus' glass is designed for a 'Weizenbock' but also good for a regular german Hefe Weizen!
just for the record..
You also had a proper Weizen glass on the 'Pinkus Munster Alt'
and the 'Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock' Vid..
late 80's to mid 90's i toured with Rock Bands as a Merchandiser and had some good times too, but the memories will be kept secret.. ;-)

jjdaven 2 years ago
Hey,
the green bottles seem to be a special overseas thing, not available here in Germany.
Don't put any lemon wedges or so in a Hefe Weiss. Some put a slice of lemon in a 'kristall Weizen'
Wich is a Wheatbeer without the sediment (yeast) a sign not to go there anymore...
Meanwhile i like the Franziskaner very much. Here in Bavaria we drink it with any meal, except desert
or just while watching youtube vids ;-)
I know you're not the biggest Wheatbeer fan, glad you liked it.

It was really really good with the sediment in there. Everything was just enhanced quite a bit. Thanks for watching.

You're lucky you got a brown bottle from Germany. The green bottles suck because they let in too much light and skunk up the beer. When I drank this it was skunky and most of the yeast stuck to the bottom of the bottle.
