the whole fucking movie is so boring and retarded, and who ever thinks that guy kubrick is a genius because he came out with such an stupid ending is just as or even more god damn stupid, fuck you kubrick for making me waste 2.5 hours of my life with your bullshit movie, FUCK YOU!
@0180917 you must then, be among those retards who think kubrick is in fact a genius, correct? well, he's not, when you make a movie that 10 out of 10 viewers can't understand, you didn't make a movie that's too smart for them to understand, you made a movie that's just stupid, because we don't understanding it makes it that, stupid!
@Tjpeter7 Actually, I'm pretty confident I did understand this movie. Just because this film is too intelligent for your limited brain to fully appreciate or understand doesn't mean it is for everyone else.
@0180917 did you, huh? well, you're more than welcome to explain it to us "mr. shit decoder" so go ahead and tell the other 25+ million people (everyone else except you and Kubrick) what's the "meaning" of the ending of this dumb movie, because not even the original writer of the book on which this movie is based on like it or understood it (especially after Kubrick added and took off things at his pleasure).
@Tjpeter7 "You are free to speculate as you wish about the philosophical and allegorical meaning of the film."
Like the end of 2001, the final shot of The Shining *can* be taken literally, but it is meant to be looked at figuratively/symbolically (the "starchild" in 2001 represents rebirth, which is a recurring theme in the movie). There are many suggestions throughout The Shining that the film is actually an allegory to the colonization of America and its subsequent violent history.
@0180917 OMG are you serious, because basically based on your opinion well, we could as well say that this movie is a representation of an intergalactic war that hasn't take place yet, but which will do so when Kubrick comes back to life, and that this movie was a decryption message of such event, as stupid as that is your interpretation, but I don't judge you, because any interpretation (even yours) makes more sense than the actual ending of that stupid movie.
@0180917 Now if you want to represent that colonization of the Americas, well just put three ships and a bunch of European assholes murderers into them in a scene and don't bullshit people with senseless shit not even your creepy mind really understands.
@0180917 na, you already lost any respect I may had for you, I don't take you seriously anymore, I'm sorry but nothing that you may say now will change the opinion I (or anyone else whom reads this comments) on how stupid you and Kubrick are. bye
@Tjpeter7 I'm also not going to point out your meaningless uses of profanity throughout this conversation or your complete lack of knowledge of grammar. Have a wonderful day.
@0180917 grammar? maybe, English is my third language, so I'll give you that one. But senseless, naah my friend, senseless are your comments, not mines.
@Tjpeter7 So basically your argument is this: you don't understand this movie, therefore nobody does, therefore it makes no sense at all because Kubrick was retarded. I don't suppose there's any possibility that Kubrick was a genius, which is why many (but not all) people find his films obscure and difficult to understand, is there?
Watch out for Tjpeter7, guys, we've got a cinematic genius over here.
@0180917 it's not just me, it's 9.9/10 viewers, and if Kubrick as you said "is a genius" for making a movie no one really understands (I even doubt he does himself), then I could be a genius just by taking a crap, not because I needed to take it, but because of an obscure, mysterious reason out of everyone's capacity to analyze except my asshole. That's how stupid everyone who thinks Kubrick is a genius sounds when arguing their "reasons".
@Tjpeter7 I never said Kubrick was a genius, I was sarcastically mocking you, which you apparently didn't pick up on. And now let me get this straight: people who call Kubrick a genius are stupid, I'm stupid, and Kubrick was stupid, correct? Are you a member of the 1% of viewers who are more intelligent than the other 99%, but who still don't understand the aesthetics and philosophy of Kubrick's films?
@0180917 get this one and only one thing straight: THERE'S NO SUCH THING! THERE NEVER WAS, AND NEVER WILL! Kubrick was stupid as well as his films, so stop looking for something where there's nothing; like sense or talent in Kubrick's films.
I looked exactly like Tony as a kid and when I got the shine, I soooo can relate to his experience, sadly I didn't have a Dick Halloran to give me courage and advice, these things are real.
@joebarrrs No, I once read that the hotel in which the film was shot didn't want to use the number 217, because their customers might be too scared to sleep in that room after the film was released, so they made up a number which the hotel didn't have.
Brilliant scene. Brilliant movie. Easily my favorite Kubrick film. Favorite horror film of all time. I just can't say enough good things about this movie. The way this film is shot with that weird lens or camera that Stanley used, it makes this movie so eerie and distant.
This is a great dialogue scene. It foreshadows so much of the movie, and both actors do a great job conducting a natural conversation. Danny and Dick Halloran are believable characters, each speaking in convincing tones and accents (Danny like a little boy..."I'm not us-posed to"...and Mr Halloran as a working-class Afr-Am man). Excellent performance from Scatman Crothers. And Danny Lloyd did exceptional too, being so young at the time.
@F1brawfa Yes, I saw a clip here called The Shone report and it is freaky. The movie works so pervasively on a psychological level and Kubrick has intentionally left symbolic references and audio interjections in order to bring out layers of extra interest on a subliminal level. In the first 30 minutes or so there are images of triangles with the Masonic eye, 'Shone' is heard many times, Jack looks at camera intentionally, at us when he is coming up with a new idea that drives him to insanity.
@LiteracyLabyrinth this is the second part of my comment , but something that really shocked me was when i realised that the oficial poster from the shining is not only a face of a boy but if you look closley its a face of a teddy bear :O boys nose is bears eyes , boys mouth is bears nose and so on when i finaly saw the bear i was totally freaked out
That was intense - the background effects sound like scuttling or conversations and words "SHONE" whispered sometimes. The sense of dread is uncanny.... I didnt notice that in this scene when I first saw the movie. YT is great cos you can listen intensely to key scenes and gather more information about this intensely complex movie.
A word like "shone" occurs in the background several times in this clip (first at 5 second mark, then at 1.01 etc). There is more about the phenomenon if you search Youtube for 'New Discovery in Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING: THE SHONE REPORT'. I was dubious until I checked this clip here and saw that the guy was right. Very curious.
@matrat57 You want to really be freaked out just listen cerfully at 0,05 just after he says doc you will hear Kubrick voice saying "shone" in the abckground just listen cerfully , this "shone" apears many times in the movie and is creapy as fuck
Tarot on Knives: "Flipping through all the swords in a Tarot deck, you might think all the swords are negative cards. There are some distinct and troubling images within the Swords suit, for sure, but it’s not all bad.
Mostly, the Swords are a reflection of the wide scope of ideas and thoughts that go on in our heads. And while Swords are about intellectual matters and the mind, don’t forget that the mind also creates our emotions, and so the Suit of Swords is very linked with the Cups Suit."
@anonymous1415 I never noticed before, but now that you're saying it, I don't think this is a coincidence. Sctaman Crothers is saying things like "nah there's no danger here" and he's front of the locker door where Jack will get lock up, and beside you have danny with the knives who are like "the danger above him". In any other film I would say this might be a coincidence, but this is a Kubrick so I'd say it's deliberate. It would not be the weirdest thing he did in a film
I kinda wish Danny didn't stop acting, he was starting out really good. Infact, in my opinion, i sorta wish Spielberg wouldv'e chosen him to play Elliott in "E.T.". I just believe Danny Lloyd would've made a better Elliott than Henry Thomas.
Wow. Awesome! The book's a lot different (even the room number! In Stephen King's version it's room 217) but both the versions are amazing, don't you think?
