  • That is my second cousin! :O

  • I believe in Nessie and I think that is why he crashed I feel bad for him but it is more proof of nessie

  • yeah it's sad that he got killed, but I feel bad for nessie too that must have hurt alot! :( She probably got killed too. There's probably none left now cuz of global warming and that stuff.

What's strange is that lake monsters have been reported not just Loch Ness, but also Coniston Water (where Donald Campbell made his fatal speed attempt) and Lake Windermere (where Sir Henry Seagrave made his fatal attempt). Maybe they all hit a monster, ouch :(

  • That's my great great uncle!

  • There were three accidents.

John Cobb, Donald Campbell and who was the other person?

I had seen all three on a video back in the 90's.

  • @ToroRosso20 Sir Henry Seagrave in 1930 on Lake Windermere?

  • blood money; made on the back of the fur trade:(

  • @lovandlib This wa 60 years ago....people didn't have a problem with it then.

  • I think everyone who's tried to break the WSR in a reverse three pointer configuration boat has died. I'm glad that Nigel Macknight changed his design to a conventional three pointer....

  • @CliffField Not quite. Reverse 3 pointer Cobb and Taylor. Conventional layout has killed more Campbell, Vega, Segrave, Arfons. Despite the know nothings head shaking the danger lies in structural failure or flying the boat not the configuration.

  • @fizzguts Good point. Although not unexpected as it's the more popular configuration. Would you agree that the reverse three pointer is lighter on the front end than the standard? I am thinking that most go with the heavier front end design in order to hopefully stop the front of the boat flying? I'm the first to admit I'm no expert on the subject (just an enthusiast). If you're interested I'll search for some links on the subject that I have found before (about reverse versus standard).

  • @CliffField

DuCane did very careful weight balance calcs to get the optimum weight on Crusaders front shoe. it's just a matter of position of the floats and mass location.

  • @fizzguts I'm interested in any crashes you might have info on that happened due to structural failure too. If you have any info you can spin my way that'd be cool. Thanks.

  • @CliffField

    Re "conventional" ie

Two shoes or lifting surfaces in the front. The boats to fly if it goes wrong.

Campbell, Arfons, flew & disintegrated. Tempo Alcoa Guy Lombardos conventional under radio control due to previous damage came apart. Miss Stars & Stripes broke a rudder & was wreaked nearly killing Lee Staudacher. So the record for conventionals if you add in the early prop driven boats WSR isn't flash. Sort of leaves Hustler (Taylors first boat) and SOA ( Hustler with a tail?)

  • @fizzguts There's an interesting comment from Ken Warby in this article, especially the comment about "turning like a tricycle" when talking about the reverse three pointer. You may have already seen the article, but it's interesting none-the-less. wired.com/wired/archive/11.03/cheating_pr.html

  • @CliffField Warby is a brave man & yes he built his own boat but he has forgotten a lot & is "forgetful" re those who helped him. The brilliant work Tom Fink did for Spirit of Australia for example. His latest boat is, from the underside views, a diamond pointer 2 shoes one forward one aft one port one starboard.

R3P's have been built & ran well Cobb's Crusader and the Countess of Aran's boat.

Cobbs boat had a front shoe push in Taylors rocket R3P ran in far to rough conditions and tore apart

  • @fizzguts That's some excellent info I was not aware of. Thanks heaps for enlightening me. Much appreciated.

  • how heck boat go over 300 mph 67 huhhhhhhhhhhhh most carnt do dat 2011 yooooooooo i kool

  • CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHO THE NARRATOR IS ! PLEASE! THIS MAN IS A SYMBOL !

  • @Whireax Should be Bob Danvers Walker

  • open cockpit wtf?

  • he was a very brave man, R.I.P John Cobb - A great englishman

  • @jericho833 Exactly.

  • dat music wasnt necessary b4 da crash but then again its a old skool movie way back then...tough loss

  • fweirph

  • um, so wtf did he hit??

  • @scotfreak At that speed a ripplie in the water is enough to finish everything which is how sir Donald Campbell died at coniston water.

  • part of this video was shown in human league's ''mirror man''.r.i.p. john cobb

  • He was also the inventer of corn.

  • Whats with the dramatic film score death

  • Never seen this footage before just before it said he hit 180mph I thought, it is bound to nose dive with any sort of instability.

  • john cobb had set the ultimate brooklands track record which still stands today haha

  • I suspect that the infamous loch ness monster reared its head above the water into the exact path of cobbs trajectory and sadly it killed them both.

  • da man died

  • and you'd know?

actually he was quite the opposite, intensely shy introvert, unlike M.Campbell.

A very brave man, unlike you Cederic1.

  • Kettle & black I think !

Please accept my honest & humble apology for getting your unusual name wrong while so incensed..sorry.

Please can you do the decent thing & also apologise & remove your highly inaccurate & offensive comment re a true gentleman JCobb.

FWIW his reason for trying and dying at LSR & WSR was just to decrown the REAL pompous ass & absolute "cad" M.Campbell, who John correctly thought was the wrong sort of Englishman to hold such records. No other reason, end of.

  • @Gederic1 Your life skills suck you cock! Can't wait to hear of you actually achieving something!

  • Ha Ha, I see what your doing, anyone who disagrees with you must be some sadsack stayhome without a life. Well done! I'm impressed with your skill, unfortunatly I'm 31, married with a kid and race motorcycles for a living, errr so Afuckayou!

  • I see your language/diplomacy skills still havn't improved. Just how do you, a mere boy from the sad States, know about John Cobb ?.. you don't. But then there were NO Americans brave or clever enough to compete with him and his Brit compatriots, hence your typical American jealous reply. Its overblown mouthy Yanks like you, no lifeskills or friends, that encourage the rest of the World to dislike the US of Arse.

You're just a keyboard warrior, all mouth no trousers...growup and be a REAL man.

  • @Gederic1

Err...yes thankyou, if only because my arguing using facts(look it up) plus the odd mild insult has finally drawn a coherent and polite response from you, thats good, you're beginning to grasp the art of conversational debate.

"Wee"..?...not a jock are you ?. And if I am "wee" I'm still a bigger man than you'll ever be, and both of us far lesser men than John Cobb.

"Cathartic" ?. No straight C of E me.

Thanks for your concern, off now to rejoin the real world. .

  • Comment removed

  • @Gederic1 Well congratulations. That statement that Cobb's death was "well deserved" is the most disgusting I have read even by the standards of You Tube. Few people indeed deserve that sort of comment - and certainly not this brave and patriotic gentleman.

  • @Gederic1 Montgomery is hardly relevent to this discussion is he? Typical, you are immediately defeated and try crude diversionary tactics. Now have your pathetic last word if you must and then disappear to the obscurity which is your birthright. You will be totally ignored by everyone who possesses an atom of common sense.

  • Wow. That is a very intense video. Many thanks for sharing this. John Cobb was a very brave man
