Hickok45, I had a question I've been wanting to know the answer to for awhile. I recently bought a Uberti Cattleman 1873 in .357 magnum, and being a modern revolver I was wondering if it would be necessary to load only 5 rounds and carry it on an empty chamber if I were to use it in an outdoors/camping/hunting setting.
Please excuse my ignorance, but why can you only load 5 and not 6? Why can you not just load 6 and leave the hammer on half-cock until you're ready to fire? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please?
@FrozenKoolAidDude The hammer had no safety. If six were loaded, even with the hammer down, a blow to the hammer could fire the round under the hammer.
@FrozenKoolAidDude Half-cock was used to load/unload. It allows the cylinder to spin, but yeah, it could slip and if the hammer slips with a live round under it...bang.
@FromTheIslandNapkins It depends on the condition of it usually, and if it is a rare model or is engraved. The lowest I've seen was around $850 for a used on, which I couldn't let that oppotunity pass.
who doesn't like the looks of an old colt? don't have one sadly, but i do have a ruger single six. I like it alot and like you said the design of these single action guns fit your hand like a glove. good vid
I have a nice repro made by Cimarron Arms with a black powder frame and a 5 1/2 inch barrel. Anyone who likes to shoot pistols should have at least one SAA.
Hi. I am from England where they don't allow pistols of any kind anymore. i used to shoot years ago before the hand gun ban and i miss it. I'm thinking of coming over to the US and go and find a gun club to shoot some pistols ! Is there anywhere in America where I should be heading for ? A state that I could shoot most guns and in particular using the clubs guns ? I would really appreciate someone to give me an answer. Thanks. Barry.
I have a penpal friend who has a version of the Single Action Army that has a quick change removable cylinder. He basically pulls the pin out, removes the used cylinder, slides in a new one and pushes the pin in place and it's ready to go. Have you heard of these? And how common are they?
@Schone23666 , Is he talking about a percussion gun? That's about the only way it would save enough time to make a cylinder change practical. I think I could probably eject the empty brass and reload a cartridge SAA about as fast as I could change out the whole cylinder.
hickok45, thanks to you, this video, and several others you've made in the past, I now have a new bad habit - purchasing Colt 45s!! I've been shooting guns for over 40 years but I never fired a SAA revolver. After viewing this and other videos I decided to add one to my collection. After purchasing, then firing my first one, I got a fever (like the 1911 fever I caught many years ago). The SAA may be the sweetest shooting pistol in the world and I must now procure many, many more. Thanks!
Yes, lots of interesting history there; I'd like to see it sometime. Can't believe in my trips to the Northeast over the years, I've not made it a point.
hello a question that caliber of weapon makes you the best and sorry if I write wrong or my English sucks but I'm Mexican:) I love your videos you're like a hero LOL
what a beauty! One of those things that you could look at all day and always find a new thing you like a about it! Classic defined! Great vid as always!
The craftmanship on that 2nd. Gen. is beautiful. The nice crisp click when you cock it. Man oh man doesn't get any better then that. Nice Colt Hick. thanks for sharing it.
The 1860 Army cap and ball points nice too. It's a son-of-a-gun to drive the wedge out of the Pietta models, though. I'm guessing that's what you were disgruntled about in the 1858 cap and ball video?
I know I've asked before Hickok but I have a hard time aiming my Colt SSA .22 as the rear sight is pretty much on the barrel.. I hear some people say you need to focus more on the front sight but do you try to align the tip of the large front sight level with the rear notches or what ? I like the Colt SSA .22 but I am very inaccurate with it.. Any advice is much appreciated !
That's something I've never fired. Never knew anyone that had one. Closest thing I ever owned was a Taurus .357 revolver, which I sold about... was it 18 years ago? Good grief.
you only load five when you carry it or just for safety because the hammer can hit a primer by accident if you carry it resting on a live round. in reality all the old 6 shooters are really only 5 shooters lol hope that helped.
Hickok45 you have to do a weekend at the compound as a rafle or something. I know I would pay big bucks just to shoot with you for one day. I know teachers don't make millions becuase my sister is one. You could make some real money. I would love to be the first. Just kidding I know you like your privacy but a man can dream can't he. Keep it up. I think about this channel like my wife thinks about american idol.
Beautiful... I love single action revolvers. There's nothing else with that kind of classic beauty, not even a 1911. Well, maybe some flintlock pistols can match the gorgeous looks, but SA revolvers are definitely more than special.
I mean, I like modern pistols, but in my opinion they are just not comparable in aesthetics.
@CityJay510 , You could, but I prefer not to. On any 1st or 2nd Generation gun, it would likely lessen the value considerably. Plus, wear on any metal parts of a gun just give it character. :-)
Nice Colt! The ivory grips thru me for a loop, though. I had you pegged as more of a staghorn guy. What a beautiful reminder for me to never assume...
I like stag, but I've had problems finding one that felt good. These Ajax Grips are contoured exactly almost exactly the same as 3rd Generation stock grips. They feel great, which is the priority for me. As a shooter, looks become secondary to feel. The Talon Grips, for example, don't necessarily make a Glock look better, but it doesn't matter; they feel so good and give such a great grip on the gun.
I think that .45 Colt SSA is my favorite of all your guns. Thank you for sharing it with us. Kinda reminds me of the old T.V. show ' McLeod ' with Dennis Weaver.

Two questions, my friend, if you don't mind:
1. How close are these newly-manufactured Colts to the original 1880s models? In other words, would an 1880's gunman detect any differences?
2. Is the formula for loading a Colt SAA load one, skip one, load 4?
Thanks for another excellect video! Bur where's the gunleather?
