To Add personality more reflects polynesian as i study culture the only thing id agree on in melanesians in the dark skin color and hair other then that its mostly polynesian traditions and culture and names. I love my fellow melanesians and micro's but speaking about tradition and culture language we speak its mostly reflects the polynesians ties . Way before the Tongan's invade most of my Tovata's from Lau .Period we Fijians are the Islands mela, micro, poly in 1 form!
Fiji is the islands in 1 form- poly, mela , micro . As a Fijian tradition & culture, names 100% polynesians , color skin 70% mela 30% kinda poly & micro like wise hair. Personality
If you really wanna look into it... Fiji is on the whole racially Melanesian but cultural more Polynesian. Thats not to say it is cultural Polynesian but it has more in common with Polynesian culture than Melanesian culture. Melanesian on the whole don't practice the Ratu system hereditary decent (which Fiji practices) is a predominantly Polynesian cultural practice. Fijian language is classed as a branch of Polynesian not Melanesian. Basically a big mixing pot!
Its funny that (they)-the polynesian cultural centre only include fiji......fiji is a melanesian country, we are melanesians not polynesians, we are melanesians with some traces of polynesians like Banabans(Rabi and Kioa), Rotuma(Northern most island part of Fiji) and the Lauans(who King Ma afu of Tonga occupied before fiji conquer it).
We aint Poly, we are Mela.....Glory to all the nesians, we are one still:)
Most Fiji Islanders passively accept the assertion that they are Melanesians. This may seem logical as they are generally darker than Polynesians.
At best, the demarcation between the three main regions of Oceania is only artificial. Politically, the Fiji Islands are grouped under Melanesia. Geographically, they are at the point where Melanesia becomes Polynesia. Obviously, there will be features and traits in the population that
Inspite of the fact that Rotuma is under the administration of the fijian goverment, the fact remain that, the Rotumans are not melanesian. They are of polynesian ancestry. Read their oral history, and you'll find that Rotuma was founded by a man named Raho from Samoa, and then later migration from Tonga and the Gilbert island. The reason why Rotuma is not known as a polynesian island is due to it's location being outside of the polynesian triangle....That's why is called a polynesian outlier.
@22871987 that shows how small you know about the pasifika people group well before missionaries invaded our islands ,,sit with a tongan or even an elderly samoan ,cook islander ,tahitian , hawaiian we have so much histories with them..than of melanesians not saying we not part of them but its a mixed group. Not everything the british wrote about Fiji is legit ,its sad that we were misinformed by some english wisdom .its sad that we have them in our school system, wrong informations!
@22871987 do your research right ,,go to USP/Tonga/Samoa/Tahiti/Cooks/New Zealand/Hawaii gather all informations on book about Fiji what their people have about our forefathers. Their stories about us and about how misinformed we are about us and how the english formalized everything in blue print.Do your research thats all i ask stop making comments coz you dont really know your real roots melanesian /polynesia we are both!
