They should go for the most efficient answer. It's more efficient to move electric energy around than to have a huge battery that you haul around. We should look at online electric vehicle technology.
It's too bad the oil companies bought up all the innovative battery patents in the last 40 years and tucked them away unused to protect their industry.
I don't see electric cars replacing gas cars anytime soon. With cars like the Nissan Leaf you can only drive 70-miles or so at best with the heat or A/C on.
Do an experiment and reset your trip computer on you car and you will be shocked how fast you can rack up 50-miles while just driving around in town.
I think that with a gas back up, these electric cars can indeed become mass sellers. Until batteries can go 300+ miles, Range anxiety will prevent 90% of people from buying them.

Electricity comes from primarily coal plants. Notice the huge push for "ENERGY INDEPENDENT COAL" lately? Electric cars fail. I think from what ive seen, algae is the best stepping stone or replacement from natural energy.
