I love the fact that Guido's Stain (or whatever his name is) responds by saying, "You didn't expose John Prescott for shagging his secretary..."
Because, of course, the cutting edge of political journalism is all about who's shagging who.
Everyone has an agenda, Giddy Forks included. The only way to keep abreast of the *facts*, and form your own opinion, is to get your news from a wide range of sources, not just those whose opinions align with your own.
Private Eye responded to Staines' email-slur story by mentioning that on the Guido Fawkes website his slavish fans posted a load of disgusting drivel about G.B.'s son (who was diagnosed with this or that - 30th November 2006).
I haven't been able to find it on the website; presumably it has been removed, or I can't find it, even after searching many times. If it's the former: is this ridiculous character any better than the politicians he's supposed to despise?

Im not pro-Staines...ok, heres what I'll say against him, to show Im logical and serious on the matter of being taken seriously & rational: Mr White was right to belittle Staines' pride in tuft-hunting from the Guardian: "I must be good, cos the Guardian gave me an award..one u coveted" ...Well, saying that to an insider, is ridiculous,& the sign of the amateur as far as Whites concerned (it also proves, tho, PS is not a paid professional, unless hes the next Gielgud, altho, hmnn, i doubt it)

I, for one, am conviced paxo is a lackey of the establishment, Mr White..not because, the beauty of yr rhetoric spells out the absurdity that " the lackeys of the establishment are 'constrained legally by law to appear to be lackeys of the establishment' " , BUT BECAUSE THEY ARE LACKEYS OF THE Fucking ESTABLISHMENT. lol, hence their even getting the job in the first place and not some other gifted wordsmith down the street....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzwake me up after the dark ages
The worrying thing is that the blogging world carries a lot of influence and yet it is only comment, innuendo and gossip. There is no regulatory over this.
I don't deny that the freedom of it is an excellent example of the democracy in which we live in, but when the facts discussed aren't neccessarily true then it becomes a problem.
stuff in the media isnt true either... and democracy doesnt nec.cessarily mean published free speech...since the printing press was invented and then owned privately, what they publish is usually their politic... a good book is John Pilger: Rulers of the World on the topic
The whole idea of libel laws is that it stops the press printing lies and getting away with it. I don't see how the absence of libel laws makes political journalism in the blogosphere any more accurate.
cos sometimes unless you have a photograph documenting the very event you cant say a dickiebird against the most heinous people..and by and large heinous people make sure they are never photographed in the act..thats the law tho...the blogosphere is a hell of a lot more accurate, it doesnt need photographs, just peoples testimony
Also, theres a lot of merit in it at the moment as a news form..people are sick of media & prats like Campbell & McBride..
..look at this latest pharmaceutical frenzy over swine flu with even BBC Sissons sighing up his sleeve at the sock-puppets coming on air fully dressed, holding their throats & croaking: "I got back from me holiday in Cancun, i got a sore throat &now i better put me gas mask on" I mean, if u had flu, u wouldnt be able to get out of bed

Actually it doesnt. More truth comes out ..if people are willing to listen to other peoples disclosure...judicial evidence cannot be obtained from true heavyweights, now can it?
think about it, 4% of rapes are prosecuted, even with evidence.....grounded damnation works better en masse

And who taught it me?
When it comes to cross-party corruption on issues that really matter(and their sycophant advisors & underlings) everyone is pretty partisan as long as they get feathers in the cap and get paid....
...sure, they have more free rein to be a bit viperish about foreign politic,-they have to tell a bit of news afterall... but as everyone knows their main role, their main income, stems from selling corporate products/ideas and being the eternal courtier of whoever is in power...if we have a pretend "left-wing" party in power that preaches fascist views then we will have a newspaper industry that preaches fascist views...but that doesnt mean we have a "leftwing" news paper industry, does it?
Also, whats this crap that The Guardian is left-wing...?
They were the first paper to cosy up to Organized Crime and help plug some of their "products" vociferously....& the more right-wing, hypocritical or 'champagne socialist' an introduced policy is, the more praise the Guardian heaps on the Labour party...anybody who is intelligent enough to understand a broadsheet would know that these are not definitions of socialism....
Hmmm commenting with ones 'opinion' & 'reporting' for a 'news' organisation are clearly very different things... but... lets not think for one second that the Corporate Media are anything but 'corporate'... in other words they are part of the corporate web that has basically become a global(ist) 'monopoly' now.. but without the anti-trust laws to 'protect' the public good.
It was a bit curious for 'Mr Fawkes' to appear in this way, which undoubtedly drew more attention to him. Being an enigma is surely more interesting than being Paul Staines.
But Michael White was a bit worked up, wasn't he? Chill out Mr White!
The thing that I can't stand about Guido over the whole McBride affair is how he has made himself the story (see his Times peice). He may have broken the story but that is what reporters do, most, however, don't then take a curtain call. That level of political narcissim is not usually found in the mainstream media, and makes me wonder how impartial Guido really is...
No, the Telegraph actually broke the NDA Paul gave them (Non-Disclosia Agreement) And informed those at Downing Street of the article. Paul gave it for free to the Sunday Newspapers. I really wouldn't believe the Telegraph. They are not even Tory any more. On the blogs we call it the Labourgraph.
Really? Which blogs? I'm sorry if The Telegraph isn't voraciously right wing enough for you, but to suggest that it supports Labour, even the centre-right version currently at Number 10, strikes me as being slightly divorced from reality.
And you say Paul gave it to the papers for free. Personally I wouldn't believe a word that man said, but if that is the case, then so what? As the previous commenter said, that's what reporters are meant to do.
reporters dont "break" stories..theyre just told shit....if their editor and lawyers say it toes the party line they paste it up, if it doesnt, its discarded and noones any the wiser. Most copy is stolen: working methods include bugging, hacking, pandering for favors/access to info, accepting huge bribes from stars agents to use paper as tableaux to provide relentless publicity campaign for star & so on ..all made up, all controlled by the same handful of men...all saying the exact same story
Guido's had the last laugh though shafting McBride and was proved right. This week's events proved that the news people were in bed with the corrupt NuLabour politicians.
Can't these playground bullies on the level of "your dad smells" get themselves a proper job; afterall,, thats what they keep preaching the underclaass should be doing
A completely irrelevant argument, so old it even has a latin name "ad-hominem" (look it up). Attack the person rather than the argument, which is of course what McBride specialised in. Mr Staines's past life has nothing to do with the fact that McBride is a serial liar and has been found out. My guess is that these comments emanate from the same tradition that McBride hails from.
Bereft of a good case they do after the person.
Guido has done the UK a great service to get rid of this man.
Derek Draper is a liar, I hate the way this government and their hanger ons are becoming almost Stalinist in their approach to party politics. Well done to Paul Staines , took on the big boys and won.
Paul Staines is a complete & utter unintelligent sad tosser, who has conned many people into thinking he is very clever & a wonderful writer/journalist by being able to use a computer, the Internet & writing a blog. So what!!! My 8y/o nephew writes a blog with more wit, literary ability & style than Paul Staines could ever dream of. Get a fuc*ing life Mr. Staines, you sanctimonious talentless asshole, or even better, get off your big fat ass & do something useful for society!!!
For a two time convicted drink driver who was over twice the legal limit and admitted to driving without insurance at the time one wonders why anyone would put any credence to anything he utters, District Judge Timothy Stone told him: "You can't help yourself can you? You lack the insight to realise when you are a danger to other people. Do you realise what a danger you are to the public?" Staines replied "I do realise".
A former declared bankrupt who was referred to by a judge as bankrupt in proceedings in July 2007, after admitting negligence in his tax returns, but he has so far refused to comment on his current financial status. Staines's personal assets are offshore, and he is himself based in Ireland. What value to a man who cares little for the safety of others as shown by his driving. The entire political blog lacks any dignity with true journalistic skill, just vitriolic ad hominem Machiavellian spite.
I agree with your comment about Mr.Staines's political blog whole-heartedly, and after reading your relevations about Mr. Staines, only a little of which I knew before, my opinion of him has sunk even further into the depths of my incredulous despair that such a man can be lauded by so many.
I should apologise for my crass bad language earlier, but the media's recent coverage of the "No.10 email scandal", and the publicity given to Mr. Staines as some kind of blogging god, along with his ridiculous, spiteful, conspiracy theory comments have really annoyed me. The judge was right, Mr. Staines is a danger. A danger not only to all road users, but also to a gullible public audience.
I'm not a labour spoiler. Just a hard working stiff who finds that Staines twice drove whilst drunk and that was only the times he got caught. That indicates he makes impaired decisions, does not learn from mistakes & cares little for others. ad-homienem, a hijacked semantic with regard to his actual sense of judgement. I choose not to put any credence in people that make selfish lifestyle decisions with little honest empathy towards others & that could impact in a family shattering scenario.
one could argue that was a personal failing, recklessness, an accident, or an alcohol problem..it doesnt mean he lacks astuteness, credence or empathy, ,,nor is it malicious
with the evidence presented & the judges full summing up & that it was not once but twice he drove over the limit and once without insurance indicates he lacks empathy & judgement for the lives of other people on & off the road. No astuteness, it's a selfish untrustworthy act & I would say malicious to others. Credence? 'claim to acceptance; trustworthiness'. A 'problem' does not give one a selective right to base ones credibility. I find it it sad but then we all make choices on what to accept.
I have seen elsewhere on YouTube your response to defend Staines but to take the route of diverting your anger on me by calling me banal, hypocritical, NuLabour and that I break the law regularly is anger diverting whilst debating a person that decides to drive over the limit without insurance. Do you consider that a well mannered, reasoned, fair & balanced reply? Do you not accept that there is something that goes beyond entrenched party political lines when people take anti social decisions.
I do. I've always thought the measure of a man is how he conducts his personal/domestic life- whether he is mean to his kids, whether he visits sex-slaves, whether he says chauvinistic things to his wife that he'd never repeat in the board-room..its a known fact most men inthe public eye lead double lives
...but having a drink-problem, from drinking too much with friends is just that: having a drink problem, in my view..
..a failure rather than a deliberate pre-meditated abusive vice with malice aforethought (and I am the first person to be against drink-driving & speeding, I abhor it)..the result of course, can be anti-social, cause death etc, yes of course. But psychologicallyspeaking it doesnt fall under the definition of sociopathic or 'anti-social behaviour', and so i do think it is banal, philosophically speaking, to bring that up as part of an argument of whether Staines has credibility or not. It is
n.b.. I'm not pro-Staines elsewhere...I'm more impressed with his method than what he writes...he is an original and courageous, he does it for principle, not money...a refreshing change in these days from the yellow-bellied press with their repressed anger & jealousy at having to compromise for The Establishment and the Royal Family for free sex, tuft-hunts and kickbacks..how pitiful
DailyMail? I am not that Machiavellian. method? Staines does allow by his own admission unsubstantiated racist and homophobe posts on his blog and maintains he has no control on them. Comment does disappear when highlighted, with the Fraser Browns diagnosis with cystic fibrosis unhinged comments of 30.11.06. I fully agree that there is a need for honest factual disclosure in media/gov, as you say, there is a huge amount of wrong. I have doubts over method of this particular blog gate keeper.
I do agree with Staines though that most trad/maintream journalists at times craft their questions to politicians in the fear they will be ostracised if they bring up awkward searching points, as with the junior Sky journalist that ruffled Cameron's feathers and anger control when he became leader, as Adam Boultons said to Staines it took awhile to get full access again, so in that respect Staines is going where others fear to tread and escapes the bulling of media advisers and spin doctors.
My take. District Judge Stone: "You can't help yourself can you? You lack the insight to realise when you are a danger to other people. Do you realise what a danger you are to the public?" with respect I see that as anti social behavioural intent as the judge indicated his danger to the public, his act was knowingly pre mediated via no insurance. To be fair I find no problem when Staines exposes politicians indiscretions and by default uses that as a stick to cast an eye on their credibility.
your point taken, with due respect by your very own criteria with this 'measure' in mind one can say as well it is within reason when a person with full prior knowledge drives a car with no insurance (coupled with being over the limit twice) it constitutes something more than a 'problem'. It was his pre meditated decision. His pre meditated action was admitted under oath . He knew he had no insurance but took the decision to drive coupled with being over the limit. Only my humble view.
This week, it looks like Staines is coming to the fore, but only through the idiocy of Gordon Brown's closest adviser - not through skill on his own part (unless he personally hacked the systems to get the email)
an obvious remark without thinking about it would be that blogging is a good thing - for obvious reasons.however,as this guy illustrates, the only news they report is news that theyve heard about in mainstream media(making it second hand, and no different),and they have no journalistic standard(or editing team) to keep to(making them biased and unconcerned about publishing anything incorrect).plus, the anonymity factor leaves them accountable for nothing. people who support this, just have a think
I'll be honest.. I watched this the first time some two months ago and thought Fawkes/Staines came off pretty badly... I watched it again today and he actually came through okish... I think SMWhite was a little pertubed by the accusation of a secret email system by retorting maybe Nick got it wrong too... I wonder where he got it from etc. He looked rattled at that.
mainstream journalism doesn't reveal the truth...if it did White would be out of a job and Guido would have to focus his blogging efforts in other directions. I can't help, but admire Paxman and Guido...as for White I think he'd sell his mother down the river to save himself.
I hate the left-wing guardian but Paul Staines is probably the biggest fucking wanker in the blogosphere. Read his blog; it's just gossip and meaningless tittle-tattle and it's a depressing indictment of our political culture that his is the most popular. His libertarian views on drugs are repellent and deeply selfish; just because a sheltered toff like him can manage with drug addiction, doesnt mean the poorest in society can do the same.
It's not as simple as that. He's previously been a member of the Conservative and also Libertarian Party.
Do you think it's acceptable to label Prescott a Common Socialist bastard? I don't think that it is - but it works both ways. Judging people on class is always wrong.

'Free country', to what extent. No countries are free, otherwise they would be total anarchy, and that does not sit to well with Bush and now Brown, who would want to impose an authoritarian rule on any 'free country'.
The most freeist country now is Iraq, because you can do anything you want without the hands of law being imposed.
White is an impressive journalist who is accountable to his readers and to the public (the letters page). Fawkes rants on about whatever takes his fancy (very often with little or no factual basis) and is accountable to no-one apart from his loony regular readers. I know who I would prefer to read! (and who we can trust for that matter)
To the public and to real journalists Staines is a laughing stock!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the guardian editor is a complete knob - he is tucked up in Gordon Brown's bed giving him a peck on cheek everytime he go s to bed - these people have enormous power when it comes to expressing opinion in newspapers and he is Gordon's best mate so do you think he is gonna write real bad stuff bout old Gordon - take note Guardian readers!
I'll have to disagree. I think Mr. White is an excellent political journalist. As for how he treated Mr. "Guido Fawkes" aka Paul Staines, I think he gave him a good dressing-down. Bloggers are no more informed or 'enlightened' than others, and Fawkes has become such a blog celebrity, I'm more than happy to see him being brought to account. I think the amused-looking Paxman would agree.
He is not a Guardianista, he is not Michael White, he is SIR Michael White. Arise please. What a bitter self-important man. And to think, I used to read all that drivel in the Guardian....
No haringfan2, Guido is spot on, watch this space for Lord Levy's trail, who's got it wrong now Michael? Levy's in it up to his neck, the cash-for-honours money trail now leads to a Californian Soft-porn star, Mossad & the Saudi royal family. Priceless!!
Appearing as a shadow was plain dumb. The points raised in fawkes's/staines's accompanying film were well made, and not effectively answered by White and co.
Paul Staines comes across as very amateur here- out of his depth.

Guido Fawkes is little more than a tory front group. Just like the tax payers alliance
He was exposed years ago, as working his web site from tory party servers.
They put him off shore, to act as their leak/smear merchant. Knowing nobody can sue him there
Just the tories "red rag" forum I'm afraid.

I don't deny that the freedom of it is an excellent example of the democracy in which we live in, but when the facts discussed aren't neccessarily true then it becomes a problem.
trevster2905 2 years ago
stuff in the media isnt true either... and democracy doesnt nec.cessarily mean published free speech...since the printing press was invented and then owned privately, what they publish is usually their politic... a good book is John Pilger: Rulers of the World on the topic
MoonAharshMistress 2 years ago
it can also bear facts tho aswell, that you couldnt publish owing to "libel" laws...
..that is true freedom of speech, no?
MoonAharshMistress 2 years ago
The whole idea of libel laws is that it stops the press printing lies and getting away with it. I don't see how the absence of libel laws makes political journalism in the blogosphere any more accurate.
trevster2905 2 years ago 3
cos sometimes unless you have a photograph documenting the very event you cant say a dickiebird against the most heinous people..and by and large heinous people make sure they are never photographed in the act..thats the law tho...the blogosphere is a hell of a lot more accurate, it doesnt need photographs, just peoples testimony
MoonAharshMistress 2 years ago
Also, theres a lot of merit in it at the moment as a news form..people are sick of media & prats like Campbell & McBride..
..look at this latest pharmaceutical frenzy over swine flu with even BBC Sissons sighing up his sleeve at the sock-puppets coming on air fully dressed, holding their throats & croaking: "I got back from me holiday in Cancun, i got a sore throat &now i better put me gas mask on" I mean, if u had flu, u wouldnt be able to get out of bed
Even the media r sick of the media

...sure, they have more free rein to be a bit viperish about foreign politic,-they have to tell a bit of news afterall... but as everyone knows their main role, their main income, stems from selling corporate products/ideas and being the eternal courtier of whoever is in power...if we have a pretend "left-wing" party in power that preaches fascist views then we will have a newspaper industry that preaches fascist views...but that doesnt mean we have a "leftwing" news paper industry, does it?
MoonAharshMistress 2 years ago
Also, whats this crap that The Guardian is left-wing...?
They were the first paper to cosy up to Organized Crime and help plug some of their "products" vociferously....& the more right-wing, hypocritical or 'champagne socialist' an introduced policy is, the more praise the Guardian heaps on the Labour party...anybody who is intelligent enough to understand a broadsheet would know that these are not definitions of socialism....

The thing that I can't stand about Guido over the whole McBride affair is how he has made himself the story (see his Times peice). He may have broken the story but that is what reporters do, most, however, don't then take a curtain call. That level of political narcissim is not usually found in the mainstream media, and makes me wonder how impartial Guido really is...
samwardell 2 years ago
Samwardell writes "He may have broken the story but that is what reporters do,".
This is one of Paul's complaints. Journalists don't do this any more. The Telegraph refused the story. No idea why. Well, I do have a suspicion.
ampersandtay 2 years ago
If you believe the Telegraph, and on this I do, it's because Staines wanted £20k for the story.
ciaranj75 2 years ago
No, the Telegraph actually broke the NDA Paul gave them (Non-Disclosia Agreement) And informed those at Downing Street of the article. Paul gave it for free to the Sunday Newspapers. I really wouldn't believe the Telegraph. They are not even Tory any more. On the blogs we call it the Labourgraph.
ampersandtay 2 years ago
As the previous commenter said, that's what reporters are meant to do.
ciaranj75 2 years ago

A completely irrelevant argument, so old it even has a latin name "ad-hominem" (look it up). Attack the person rather than the argument, which is of course what McBride specialised in. Mr Staines's past life has nothing to do with the fact that McBride is a serial liar and has been found out. My guess is that these comments emanate from the same tradition that McBride hails from.
Bereft of a good case they do after the person.

A danger not only to all road users, but also to a gullible public audience.
stevok66 2 years ago
Yes, we get a lot of you labour "spoilers" on the blog, but we have learned to see through them pretty quickly lol
ampersandtay 2 years ago
I'm not a labour spoiler. Just a hard working stiff who finds that Staines twice drove whilst drunk and that was only the times he got caught. That indicates he makes impaired decisions, does not learn from mistakes & cares little for others. ad-homienem, a hijacked semantic with regard to his actual sense of judgement. I choose not to put any credence in people that make selfish lifestyle decisions with little honest empathy towards others & that could impact in a family shattering scenario.
tedplaysguitar 2 years ago
one could argue that was a personal failing, recklessness, an accident, or an alcohol problem..it doesnt mean he lacks astuteness, credence or empathy, ,,nor is it malicious
MoonAharshMistress 2 years ago
with the evidence presented & the judges full summing up & that it was not once but twice he drove over the limit and once without insurance indicates he lacks empathy & judgement for the lives of other people on & off the road. No astuteness, it's a selfish untrustworthy act & I would say malicious to others. Credence? 'claim to acceptance; trustworthiness'. A 'problem' does not give one a selective right to base ones credibility. I find it it sad but then we all make choices on what to accept.

o stop being so banal and go and read The Mail or something..

MoonAharshMistress 2 years ago
I have seen elsewhere on YouTube your response to defend Staines but to take the route of diverting your anger on me by calling me banal, hypocritical, NuLabour and that I break the law regularly is anger diverting whilst debating a person that decides to drive over the limit without insurance. Do you consider that a well mannered, reasoned, fair & balanced reply? Do you not accept that there is something that goes beyond entrenched party political lines when people take anti social decisions.
tedplaysguitar 2 years ago 2
MoonAharshMistress 2 years ago
..a failure rather than a deliberate pre-meditated abusive vice with malice aforethought (and I am the first person to be against drink-driving & speeding, I abhor it)..the result of course, can be anti-social, cause death etc, yes of course. But psychologicallyspeaking it doesnt fall under the definition of sociopathic or 'anti-social behaviour', and so i do think it is banal, philosophically speaking, to bring that up as part of an argument of whether Staines has credibility or not. It is
MoonAharshMistress 2 years ago
a bit the daily Mail, approach, you must admit?
MoonAharshMistress 2 years ago
I have doubts over method of this particular blog gate keeper.
tedplaysguitar 2 years ago 2
I do agree with Staines though that most trad/maintream journalists at times craft their questions to politicians in the fear they will be ostracised if they bring up awkward searching points, as with the junior Sky journalist that ruffled Cameron's feathers and anger control when he became leader, as Adam Boultons said to Staines it took awhile to get full access again, so in that respect Staines is going where others fear to tread and escapes the bulling of media advisers and spin doctors.
tedplaysguitar 2 years ago 3
To be fair I find no problem when Staines exposes politicians indiscretions and by default uses that as a stick to cast an eye on their credibility.
tedplaysguitar 2 years ago 2
your point taken, with due respect by your very own criteria with this 'measure' in mind one can say as well it is within reason when a person with full prior knowledge drives a car with no insurance (coupled with being over the limit twice) it constitutes something more than a 'problem'. It was his pre meditated decision. His pre meditated action was admitted under oath . He knew he had no insurance but took the decision to drive coupled with being over the limit. Only my humble view.
