This is definitely not one of the best KQ games, mostly because the "puzzles" are convoluted and the game is excessively linear. I mean, seriously, how was I supposed to guess that I was supposed to beat the witch by giving her a genie's lamp?! In my case, I just kept trying items until it turned out that was what I was supposed to do! Not to mention Mordack's castle, where you need to LET YOURSELF GET CAUGHT by the blue monster without the game randomly sending Manannan your way.
The Pei Monster!!! That blue defeated-by-dried-peas thing.....my siblings and I nicknamed it a few years back. Still love this game. The countless ways Graham can die are pretty hilarious though.
I love this game, one of my favorites. For those who don't like that you can't skip the dialogue or the bad voice acting, there's an earlier version where you can skip the dialogue and without voice acting. I hate to say it but I actually like the Yeti puzzle too, and I enjoyed all the ways to die as well, AND I loved the couple of mazes. I guess I'm just easy to please.
Back when my dad first got this game on those old floppy disks, we didn't even have speakers; we had to use the internal computer's speaker for music and sounds. :P
It's pretty pathetic how people whine about these games being too hard. I managed to complete when I was 10 and didn't have that much trouble. Games now are too damn easy and require absolutely no brain power whatsoever.
Yeah, I know lots of people complain about the "bad game design" where you die too easy and without warning and there are dead ends, but I like it that the early Sierra games (including this one) don't hold your hand through the entire process. These hard games are SO much more satisfying when you finally beat them.
Too bad you didn't include the bits about the terrible voice acting. Seeing as it was a new option at the time (I read somewhere this was the first game to have speech) they didn't hire people to voice act, they just used what they had. Which essentially gives you the feeling of being read to. It's horrible didn't notice in the 90s, but I realized with the re-released recently. However, the game is pretty decent.
Yeah it was the first game to have full speech implementation for the whole game. Of course that was the cd version of the game, the original diskette version didn't have speech. But they didn't hire professional voice actors. They just used programmers and friends of programmers to do the voices.
I have fond childhood memories of dying in the desert on this game. I did manage to complete it once (how?!). As I remember, the end battle was pretty awesome.
Space Quest and Police Quest were much better though.
I like this game, from it's artistic look, to the voice overs, and the Music. There were a lot of ways to die and a lot of ways to screw up your adventure, for ex. if don't help a rat being chased by a cat, then the rat will never come to help you escape the basement of this inn you get you get tied up in. I belive you need to get tied up to so you can use that rope later on.
I always thought that this was the easiest in the series (but maybe that's because it was the only one that I didn't need a walkthrough for :P) Great review, you should make more.
in another review i heard that Kings Quest 3 ruined a lot of the plot of the first 2 games. Is this game good anyways?

Good game, best in the series imo.
A walkthorugh would kill it tho, i suggest you only use one if youre really stuck.
and as with most adventure games. keep many saves, i cant stress that enough.
Happy gaming.

Accually maybe you're better at it, but for most people it's a freaking hard game to complete plus this had to be the worst kq game ever.

Worst King's Quest game? Are you serious? I always considered this one to be amongst the best... (not including the AGD remakes.)

@Byrnzi360 It's better than 7 but...that's about it, really.

Bad game design=/=challenge
Why do you defend this game so?
desu2234 2 years ago
@desu2234 Because you know what you're getting into when you play an old Sierra adventure game. Save early, save often!

@thejobloshow
Well, when I usually play a game, I expect it to be fun and playable. King's Quest 5 might've been fun if it was playable, but it was not.

This adventure games series has the most ways to die ever. They wanted it to be challenging. After all, when you complete it, that's it, lol.

Very funny.
The yeti puzzle is one of the worst I've ever seen in an adventure game ever. It takes absolutely no logical thinking whatsoever to complete.
