People who say this band has a "dated" sound are complete idiots! Of course the era was the 70's numbskull! What the fuck do you think all these so called "artists" today try to sound like?? @tmg1968 Fuck anyone who says anything derogatory about these guys. Those people are schmucks and need to be ignored like a dog shitting on the curb!!!!
@koletski21 I don't feel like that. I bought their Montreux DVD and it is my absolute favourite of all types of music and Corea projects. I think the fact that they have state of the art instruments and synths makes them sound very modern.
Dimeloa was always the least musically interesting part of this band for me. His technique is very precise, but his tone is always too harsh. There is a fine line between ripping & shredding. I know the gods of Mount Guitar will strike me down for this blasphemy.
@beau5375 Remember Al joined this lineup when he was nineteen. He really didn't get his sound together until he recorded "Elegant Gypsy". I'm really not a
fan of the tone of PRS guitars, I would really like to hear him Return to Les Pauls.
yea true great version but this one rocks too, i do not believe these guys could ever fail any performance of this or whatever piece.. i mean it does not matter how they play it, it always sounds great :)
this was alot of fun to shoot. that guitar was paul reed smiths personal guitar that he gave to al, more excitingly he gave me the guitar pick! and showed me his 59 les paul that he painted black. he said it lowered the value immensely but he didnt care. what a day...
this music remember me to Flower Kings:(one of the best progressive rock band from Europe)...tonight I saw here,in Spain...Return To Forever great music.thank`s
I just saw the too last week at the Merriweather Post. As digglefallen93 said, the best show in my life, expect when I saw them in '76! God, I hope they make a live album.
I was at the final NYC show on 08/08/08. I'm sure it was better than the Olympic opening ceremonies. I do disagree with some of the comments but I'm notant a musician simply a huge fan.
Al D and Stanley were at the top of their game. Chic and especially Lenny White have lost some of their skill. Overall it was an incredible event but not the best concert I've ever seen.

has not even crossed my mind. I saw dimeola on the electric rendezvous tour in 82. I am going with my best friend who plays gtr and his father is a jazz legend
Definitely the most most memorable gig i have ever seen (UK 21st July).. There really is so much to say but in short, i have waited over 20 years to see this reunion and the experience is something that will always remain with me. It was a piece of living history.
monster: Absolutely agree with you, a totally memorable gig. I was seated upstairs in the centre with a fantastic view of the stage. The sound was excellent. Very nice that it was Al's 54th Birthday as well (kudos to the guy who gave him the personalised football shirt - well done!) And as for their musicianship... simply unsurpassable. Damn, these guys are just brilliant at what they do! Best gig I've ever been to, and I've been to thousands! Really hope they make it back to London next year.
Yes, the Indigo2 venue is excellent in every respect and i much prefer it to the Festival Hall and similar. My mate went to see Chaka Khan last night which was supposed to be equally amazing.
Ha ha.... it was so bizarre when Chick came on and started vamping 'Happy Birthday' as a Samba !! Then when the audience sung it back everyone was out of phase and in different keys and Stanley Clarke was trying to accompany us all !! But somehow he and Chick finished on a mutually agreed 'tonic' !!
Saw the London show. Always felt RTF had no memorable tunes, and that Chick can't create a single good sound. Glad to have prejudices confirmed; borrible Rhodes piano for hours, then a useless bland Moog sound, then a sick duck sound from the Yamaha. Al changes guitars regularly yet gets the same screeching buzz-saw sound out of each one. VERY loud (at least at the front) & just relentlessly tuneless. And I'm a person who LIKES jazz, rock & fusion, Mahavishnu, Jan Hammer, Herbie Hancock etc.
Well you must have been the ONLY person at this gig who felt like this. In all honesty, why bother going in the first place and also sit at the front??!!
I saw them in Paris yesterday and it was an awesome performance by awesome musicians. They were all at their best especially stanley clarke (His solo was...beyond the seventh galaxy xD ).
I would have been an old fan to understand what it's like to see them after 25 years, but with my 20 i just took the biggest musical lesson of my life !! If you have the chance to see them live, do not hesitate a second !!
This is so cool. I went to a concert in seattle the other night, without knowing what the band would be like. At first, for some odd reason, they didn't impress me. I was thinking, "Ok, they're talented, but I don't know. They just aren't doing it for me." But then, after the guitar, bass, drum, and (AMAZING) piano solos, I was into it. Every song was making me think they were more and more skilled at their instrument. True musicians, that's for sure.
if you're watching this you will probably disagree with me, but i thought their show in montreal was fucking bullshit and i can't believe i paid money to see those pompous pricks rip those lame solo's for two fucking hours. i want my fucking money back fuck those assholes
I just saw them live tonight. I have to say, I've never been so enthralled and excited in my entire life. Every second had me on the edge of my seat! ubelievable!
R they playing and/or composing/recording any new material? Can you say easy money grab? Recording no longer pays. Touring does. Huge fanbase(s) of grown up kids w/ burgeoning midlife crisis, and money to spend. Sure, they're great musicians. Thats y they only need 2 rehearse for 10 days. This stuff is chiseled into their brains. Complex arrangements 2 u and me,but a no brainer for seasoned pros like RTF. Get into the studio, gentlemen, or I'm staying home & watching youporn instead.
U know how hard it was 4 me not 2 go to the show here in Chicago? Everyones opinion counts, because we're the audience. I care about real music in a big way. RTF is a sellout. They'll deny it, because the fans enable them. They go 2 the show like a wife 2 an abusive husband. Al used to deride people who play the same material, calling them " Vegas acts". Now that he's got 2 kids in college,I guess it doesnt matter. Well, I'm filing for divorce. I'll go see Wayne Newton for $20and no pretension.
Im going to see them in Philly because I never got to see them when I was younger but I agree with you that they should be recording new material. I think the problem is that real jazz/rock/progressive/fusion has been dead for years and the ones still carrying the flag aren't exactly pulling in the big bucks unless they tour constantly and these guys already have their own solo bands and Stanley ain't giving up his lucrative soundtrack work to sleep in different hotels every night.
Thnx 4 the reply. I shouldn't be so vitriolic in my posts. It's just frustrating, that's all.I know it's alot 2 ask these guys 2 halt their careers 4 an unforseen amnt of time 2 record &subsequent touring. RTF is one thing, but look @Van Halen &Police. Are they taking the low road? Would Stewarts soundtrack earnings surpass that of a new Police album? Is the industry that bad that even Van Halen can't make a lucrative record?.I love these groups. I want 2 hear more&I'm vexed by the whole thing.
Well, VH, Police and many of the other reunited classic rock bands made millions at their peak and millions on these reunion tours. But most of them aint putting out anything new either. There's too much money in reunion tours. Why risk having new material rejected by fickle record companies who only promote crap anyway? Look at the Stones. Millionaires 10x over from touring. $100+/ticket. Nobody cares about their new albums anyway. But they're rich.
Hi,Rick Spyder here. Just Saw the show in Toronto. You will RARELY see anything this. These four guys are now 4x the players. AL's learned a trick or two From Paco on NYLON string.Lenny's understated strength is like Smooooth as Silk. Stanley sounds like a String Quartet while Chick Is having more harmonic fun then free arcade.Their collective spirit, humility, musicality. camaraderie and ability to ENTERTAIN their loyal fans,is something ALL musicians should aspire too. DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW
In addition to my previous comments, I would like to add that, yes, at Seattle, too, the sound was not good but did improve as the show progressed. I have heard many groups struggle and even sound better in that building. I really think, and hopefully the sound tech,s will see this, TURN UP THE VOLUME! Louder would be better! Fill the room with sound and eliminate the dead spots!
To all the naysayers about this band reuniting, I say see the show. This is not just hype, this is about the art of music. Fantastic, I say! I was at the Seattle show June 8 and I am still reeling. Sure there were some glitches, but what the hell, they started with less than 10 rehearsals. This music is very complex and not easy for ANYONE to perform. As for one young upstart bassist from France who said Stanley hasn't improved in 30 years, keep practicing, keep practicing, keep practicing
I saw them in Detroit Saturday. They were incredible, but the sound system sucked. Never see a concert at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights. It is an open park and some idiot was blaring rock during the entire concert. Last time I had seen them was 77. They still have it. Each one has matured in their playing. I always see them when they come individually. Corea is such a gifted composer. At the end of the concert Chick stated "We shall return!!" God, I hope so. Just play at a closed venue.
I was also at the Chicago Theater Show. My previous favorite show of all time was Weather Report at NIU in the late 70s. I mean no disrespect to Paco, but Stanley took the bass to a new level. Sometimes with age some people just get old, while others become masters. Al, Chick, Lenny & Stanley are without question are Masters of the Art of Jazz. My one concern is that this tour is the end and not a rebirth of Return to Forever.
I've never even owned an album of theirs and the only songs I recognized were Vulcan World and Spain. I saw them at the Chicago Theater Friday night and all I can say is HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!! Do NOT miss this show. These 4 guys are beyond ANYTHING I have ever witnessed in a live setting. 3 hours long with a 1/2 hour intermission and worth every last penny. Don't wait forever to return!! I want to see you again!!!! Thank you!!!!!
The 6/17 St. Louis show was transcendent! It took a couple of tunes for the sound guys to get the low-end dialed in, but after that...lookout!! Stanley is THEE greatest living bassist. PERIOD.
RTF was incredible, Chick, Stanley, Al and Lenny were so insync and so clean but with so much soul. Probably the best musical performance I have ever seen. The sound at the 6/13 Universal Ampitheater Show was spectacular. What an incredible night of music and pristine sound. Great job of house mixing.
I was honored and privileged to see these guys in L.A. last night, June 13 at Gibson Amphitheater in L.A. It was the BEST concert I have ever been to, hands down, no contest. I am still high on this music!!! OMG! I've never heard anything like it. Welcome back, Return to Forever!!!
Greetings from L.A. They just played and were smokin. Kareem Abul Jabbar in trodued them and it was Chick's birthday and we sang happy birthday.Thye played from 815-11:30pm...don't miss this gig...its a once ina lifetime.
Just got my tickets for the Chicago Show and I can't wait. I hope that I can enjoy the sheer spectacle and musicianship of this legendary band without criticizing them for whatever mistakes they may make. As for Rexicano, chill out, dude, nobody comes to your job and slaps the dick outta your mouth and tells you somebody else does it better, do they?
Saw the show in SF last night ... and I'm still buzzing! The technical brilliance of these individuals combined with their obvious knowledge of the material made for a truly remarkable experience. When they get to your town, go to the show!!!

What hyperbole!
Biggest thing to happen in the next 20 years? Baloney.
This is just like an old tire that gets a retread.
By the way it was Jaco who redefined the bass...way more lyrical. And Bill Conners was always better than Al DiMeola on either electric or acoustic. Frank Zappa's band was more interesting...as well as Milton Nascimento's band. Yawn.
I've just listened to the Austin show - the first of the tour. I know there's no comparison between a tape and a real live experience, so I try to be indulgent, BUT....
I'm surprised by the high amount of "mistakes" in the written parts, especially by Chick himself!! Like they didn't rehearse enough...On the other hand, I find Al better than I expected.
I'm sure the tunes will be played more and more correctly night after night, so I won't disturb anymore the ambiant nostalgic fanatism ;-)
Saw the show last night in Vancouver. Chick was spot on but they all had a few Homer moments. Al started off really weak but by the end of the night they were cooking with fire. Played three twenty minute encores. Seriously. As far as musicianship is concerned they were untouchable. Stanly Clarke did do a major boo boo during Dual of the J and T but they all carried on and giggled a bit. Very good show. Totally laid back. Even had some cool audience participation. Tough to keep up though.lol.
It's like....they never left. Insane. Gonna catch them in SF in two weeks. Spared NO expenses -got THE WORKS. They're worth it. Each one of these guys represent the pinnacle of musical achievement in each of their repsective crafts. That, of course, includes Al. The reason he seems average is because even though he plays clear up there in the clouds, he keeps an AVERAGE profile. He doesn't make himself inaccessible; I've met him a couple of times and he's genuinely a nice, approachable person.
I just caught the show last night here in SLC, Utah. IT WAS INCREDIBLE. GO GO GO to this show if you truly appreciate music and musicians. Stanley stole the show here. There are only three letters to truly describe his solo instrumental. WOW!!! But they were all incredible.
monster: I got mine yesterday. Indigo2 on 21/7/08. King's Row VIP seat. It feels like I've been waiting 30 years for this gig. Hang on a minute... I have!
All packed, booked, and ready for the ultimate reunion gig. Its only a matter of hours now until the dudes hit the UK. Never heard Chick live on a MOOG before. It's going to be a highlight of my life for sure !!
Return To Forever getting back together to tour is living proof that there is a God. I hope they create new material as well as give us the classics. Flight of some Newborn stuff too!!

Just hear this ad. some guy paid to do this says " Al was the best guitar player at the time", what a joke!! not only was he a average guitar player then, lately he is a horrific player now. Hear Adam Rogers, Shawn Lane, Paco, Holdsworth, McLaughlin, Jeff Beck. Chick and company really need the money i guess
Dude....I'm a guitar player and have been for about 20 years, and I'm around average. I just saw Al and the gang play last night......No where near average is he. You are high, crazy, or both.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Al Di Meola is a very average player. his musical accomplishments in last many years is null. in the guitar trio he was the worst player, getting shit talked by the other two all the time. Go ask any roadie or musician to find out about Al. its nostalgic to have RTF, but AL wanking guitar is going to get mighty boring...GET BILL CONNORSS
shiva: "his musical accomplishments in last many years is null." WTF! He has released 24 solo albums and has collaborated on 20 others, not including the 3 he did with RTF. His 1994 album 'Orange & Blue' is a masterpiece of composition and playing. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, including you. I am of the opinion that you're full of sh*t. Have a nice day.
What a tremendous first rehearsal, could you imagine how long the average musician would need to play that well? my god!! I'm going to seem them in mid june in Los Angeles. They can't wait for me!! lol
VIP IN MY HOMETOWN OF SAN FRANCISCO (EVEN THOUGH I LIVE IN VEGAS) MY BIRTHDAY MONTH...THIS GOING TO BE THE BEST EVER!!....shivajirules go play some where else you silly rabbit, tricks are for kids.I like Bill Connors But why would you call Al D Crap?
Lenny sounds a little rusty here. I'm sure he'll get it together. Great to see them touring again. Hope they make a recording. I would love to see them work up "song to the pharoah kings" from "where have I known you before" and play it well. One of the best tunes of the jazz rock era.
I love RTF but I feel like Lenny lost his funkiness.

P.s. Sorry for my english , i'm french...

Stardrums 3 years ago
U know how hard it was 4 me not 2 go to the show here in Chicago? Everyones opinion counts, because we're the audience. I care about real music in a big way. RTF is a sellout. They'll deny it, because the fans enable them. They go 2 the show like a wife 2 an abusive husband. Al used to deride people who play the same material, calling them " Vegas acts". Now that he's got 2 kids in college,I guess it doesnt matter. Well, I'm filing for divorce. I'll go see Wayne Newton for $20and no pretension.

couldn't agree more
WHITLOVE2630 3 years ago
Im going to see them in Philly because I never got to see them when I was younger but I agree with you that they should be recording new material. I think the problem is that real jazz/rock/progressive/fusion has been dead for years and the ones still carrying the flag aren't exactly pulling in the big bucks unless they tour constantly and these guys already have their own solo bands and Stanley ain't giving up his lucrative soundtrack work to sleep in different hotels every night.
cathridge 3 years ago
Thnx 4 the reply. I shouldn't be so vitriolic in my posts. It's just frustrating, that's all.I know it's alot 2 ask these guys 2 halt their careers 4 an unforseen amnt of time 2 record &subsequent touring. RTF is one thing, but look @Van Halen &Police. Are they taking the low road? Would Stewarts soundtrack earnings surpass that of a new Police album? Is the industry that bad that even Van Halen can't make a lucrative record?.I love these groups. I want 2 hear more&I'm vexed by the whole thing.
yng31wie 3 years ago
Well, VH, Police and many of the other reunited classic rock bands made millions at their peak and millions on these reunion tours. But most of them aint putting out anything new either. There's too much money in reunion tours. Why risk having new material rejected by fickle record companies who only promote crap anyway? Look at the Stones. Millionaires 10x over from touring. $100+/ticket. Nobody cares about their new albums anyway. But they're rich.
cathridge 3 years ago

Fill the room with sound and eliminate the dead spots!
turn4don 3 years ago
To all the naysayers about this band reuniting, I say see the show. This is not just hype, this is about the art of music. Fantastic, I say! I was at the Seattle show June 8 and I am still reeling. Sure there were some glitches, but what the hell, they started with less than 10 rehearsals. This music is very complex and not easy for ANYONE to perform. As for one young upstart bassist from France who said Stanley hasn't improved in 30 years, keep practicing, keep practicing, keep practicing
turn4don 3 years ago
I saw them in Detroit Saturday. They were incredible, but the sound system sucked. Never see a concert at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights. It is an open park and some idiot was blaring rock during the entire concert. Last time I had seen them was 77. They still have it. Each one has matured in their playing. I always see them when they come individually. Corea is such a gifted composer. At the end of the concert Chick stated "We shall return!!" God, I hope so. Just play at a closed venue.
mcfallows 3 years ago
I just saw them at the Gibson Amphitheater just over a week ago and they put all of todays bands to shame...INCREDIBLE!!!

VideoLenser 3 years ago

I never thought I'd ever see this band play live. I was stunned & amazed the whole night. My jaw is still somewhere at the venue.

Yawn.
Rather go listen to my old Miles Davis CDs.

I'm sure the tunes will be played more and more correctly night after night, so I won't disturb anymore the ambiant nostalgic fanatism ;-)
louison79 3 years ago
Saw the show last night in Vancouver. Chick was spot on but they all had a few Homer moments. Al started off really weak but by the end of the night they were cooking with fire. Played three twenty minute encores. Seriously. As far as musicianship is concerned they were untouchable. Stanly Clarke did do a major boo boo during Dual of the J and T but they all carried on and giggled a bit. Very good show. Totally laid back. Even had some cool audience participation. Tough to keep up though.lol.

Yeah...Al & Chick miscued during the intro of "Dual..." in L.A. 6/13

Thriftsavings 3 years ago
I just caught the show last night here in SLC, Utah. IT WAS INCREDIBLE. GO GO GO to this show if you truly appreciate music and musicians. Stanley stole the show here. There are only three letters to truly describe his solo instrumental. WOW!!! But they were all incredible.

Al Di Meola is a very average player. his musical accomplishments in last many years is null. in the guitar trio he was the worst player, getting shit talked by the other two all the time. Go ask any roadie or musician to find out about Al. its nostalgic to have RTF, but AL wanking guitar is going to get mighty boring...GET BILL CONNORSS
shivajirules 3 years ago
shiva: "his musical accomplishments in last many years is null." WTF!
