if the engines change so the wagon hooks face the right way then when the wagon arrive in auckland they will face the wrong way to return to Wellington so each waagon would have to be turned .seems to me they turned the engines so the load on the wagons can be shutted off in the right order on the way up to auckland
Okay... this is done soley because (for all intents and purposes) Woodville is West East branch line. The loop at Woodville is used to return trains to their correct North South orientation? Sorry to sound like a dip. BTW, I grew up in Ashhurt (I lived at 56 Cambridge Ave, opposite the school and next to Drysdale Plumbers). The gorge is awesome!
I've even created a simulation. If NZR uses knuckle couplings, they don't actually change orientation... The only thing I can see happen is the carriages go through in a reverse order and the engines go through the other way around...
When the train arrives at Palmerston North from Woodville,it arrives into the yard facing south. If the train arrived into Woodville directly and continued on to Palmerston North, it would turn effectively the wagons around. By doing it this way, the wagons will still be "facing north" when ready to depart Palmerston North, and the wagon hooks will be at the same end as they left Wellington (and would've been if the train had come straight up the NIMT in the Manawatu).

Fascinating! After all the years, I didn't know that couplers differed from one end of a wagon to the other! Learn something every day!

I've heard the commentary, but still don't understand why they turn the train around before going through the gorge?
