  • It's so funny that you can hear you clock! I've never heard a clock in a vid before. :) It's all good.

  • It's been years since i heard this song. The last time i heard this was when i was performing this and i was the Youngest of Tevye's daughters. And we had to do the ballet sequence on stage. It was such a sad song and when i came off i always felt like crying. Such a moving song and dance sequence.

  • I don't remember Tevye having a cuckoo clock with him in this scene. Maybe he couldn't afford a watch. :)

  • Honestly, Kadys Wellies, It seems your loud clock is more or less in pace! Knowing the amateurish reasons, it's even more charming! Gaaaa- reeeaaaatttt!

  • Why this song DON'T appear un LP (orange color)?

  • Fiddler on the roof represents change. How everyone keeps breaking traditions, how at the end they are forced to move. It also somewhat represents civil rights, letting the girls marry who they wish.

  • Many believe that the fiddler represents the old ways. I actually believe that the fiddler represents change. He seems to play her off into the change that is taking over her life. He also appears at the end, when everyone leaves. Remember at the start? "without our tradition, we'd be like fiddlers on the roof."

  • @Hoping8 Tevye did say at the beginning, "Without our traditions, our live would be as shaky as,... as shaky as,... a Fiddler on the Roof! Tradition, in his mind, was a way to keep balance in the ups and downs of life.

In the ballet, Chava chooses Fyedka over the Fiddler that represents tradition. Then, when they are expelled from Anatevka, the Fiddler comes with them, signifying that the traditions will go with them to America.

  • Many people

  • @pettymolly I'll have to assume that you also meant that if I become a mother I'll get it also. ^^

  • What's with the background ticking?

  • @imtosexyformyself when you become a father and see the time running.. You'll get it

  • I got Fyedka :)

  • Great imagery: Chava chooses between her love, and the "fiddler on the roof", a metaphor for her traditional life.

  • FILMED ON YOUR TV FAIL LOL

  • FILMED ON YOUR TV FAIL LOL

  • It's so beautiful, sad and tender:) Keep it the way it is, please. The clock adds to the effect in some way, time slipping by.

    Little Chavale.

  • @ReviewCam - Beautifully stated. : )

  • I love the way they superimpose the sisters with the men they eventually marry, each older sister gently moving away from playing to being part of a couple with the husband. And Chava's moment of indecision between tradition and her heart.

  • a dads love.. So cute :)

  • this part of chava's ballet is the most touching ...and very emotional as well..

  • Poor Topol....made to pull a cart with a bomb in the back! No wonder he looked so troubled...he had no idea when it was going to explode! ;-)

  • My faourite play also. The dad is so kind

  • The ticking is toxic....but about my favoutite movie ever.

  • actually, the tick-tock clock sound adds to the flavor of the song, because it is about how the father reminisces how his "little bird" used to be and how she's not grown up and bascially left the "nest". The time motif is there.

  • @himanv haha i think it's the clock in the background..not exactly a part of the song...i'm watching the one on my CD, it doesn't have it ^_^

  • vyetka was the only one who wasnt jewish! perchik was jewish just not very religous.

  • song is beautiful, but couldnt u remove this fucking ticking noise? its distroyes all the beauty of the song! :/

  • haha i think it's funny that the clock was going! it sort of sounded like a train was nearby...thanks for posting this! I LOVE this movie!!

  • click clock, click clock.... XD

  • YAY :) i play chava

  • Love has no boundaries.

That's the truth. No religion, no race, no ethnicity or sexuality can stop love.

  • wow, I was watching this and i just got shivers. It's so beautiful. I now get the metephor with the fiddler. Ha! amazing.

forbidden romance just gets me everytime.

  • fuck you 99RedBal

  • Wow your an idiot.... first of all its Tevye, and hes a guy.

  • The movie is trying to tell us that there is only so far someone (in this case Tevya) will go against their religion for their family. Chava converted to Orthodox Christian, the most traditional and, as we believe, the first Christian religion. Chava was previously Orthodox Jewish, which although is very similar with tradition, is obviously not Christian. Tevya wasn't stupid; although he might have been slightly drastic, he was showing that he cared more for his God than for what God created.

  • Chava maybe didn't "convert". Maybe she was able to marry Fyedka without losing her faith.

Besides, a child born of a Jewish mother IS Jewish even if the mother converts to another religion. By ALL reckoning, the child is, legitimately, Jewish.

Fyedka could always convert to Judaism.

If their children marry Jewish, the grandchildren are Jewish. Even if a daughter marries a non-Jew and has a son, HE'S Jewish by birth just as much as a daughter. Also, they can convert and be reckoned Jewish!

  • You could be right, but I think you're confusing Jewish the religion with Jewish the race. Chava is technically still Jewish (racial wise), even if she did convert to Christianity. However, Fyedka probably didn't convert to Judaism, and an intemarriage between the two extremes (Orthodox Christian and Orthodox Judaism) in that time period would probably not be performed without one of the couple members converting.

  • What I mean is that Chavva could have "converted" to the Orthodox Christian faith just to marry and, then, turn around and revert to her Jewish faith. Fyedka could also convert to the Jewish faith or remain Christian allowing the children to be raised in the Jewish FAITH. They are STILL Jewish in race because of HER! She has NEVER stopped being Jewish.

In the end, Teyve hasn't really lost anything. That's why the rest of his family DIDN'T reject Chavva!! What she did can be reconciled this way.

  • I see what you mean now--sorry for the misunderstanding.

  • That's pretty sad though that he would disown his own kid. I guess that kind of thing still goes on in some families in all religions. But to me, it's a little crazy because Perchik was also not really Jewish-- He is made to sound like a Communist. So what difference does it make between him and Fyedka? Any case, in most Jewish-nonJewish marriages, the offspring are apparently still supposed to be raised only Jewish. I don't get the Abrahamic religions...!

  • It is kind of sad. Although Fyedka seems to be communist, he was married in an Orthodox Christian Church--therefore I don't think he can be a communist, because their offical religion is atheism. I think you're right in that the offspring of Jewish-non-Jewish marriages still have to be raised Jewish; however, by getting married in the Orthodox Christian church, Chava is no longer Jewish--she's Christian. And so she would not raise her children in the Jewish faith. That's why her family was mad.

  • I'm pretty sure Perchik was Jewish. I don't think being a Communist is the opposite of being Jewish.

  • You're right

    being a Communist doesn't make a Jewish person a non-Jew.

There were many Jewish supporters & leaders in the Communist movement. They were hoping Communism would bring about a utopia society where all people could live equally & in prosperity regardless of religious or social backgrounds.

Once Stalin took over the system became fascist and he persecuted Jews claiming that they weren't loyal.

So their hopes for a utopia society were dashed by the Communism that Stalin propagated

  • sincerly asking, are all Christion/Jewish/Moslem religions considered Abrahamic? Never heard that term before, but makes sense.

  • 19 And G-d said: ''Nay, but Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son; and thou shalt call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his seed after him.

20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee; behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.

Issac is the ancestor of Jews, Ishmael is the ancestor of the muslims. This tkn frm Bereshit 17(Gen 17

  • Ok, someone needs to do this over. Get rid of the clock and try again.

Good song though, love this part in the movie

  • Yeah, sorry :(

  • @KadysWellies - Better to say, thank you for posting this!

  • @EnvelopingShadowz the clock is his time running out. Watching his girls growing up.. Symbolic :)

  • @EnvelopingShadowz wouldn't mind if it was on the beat of the song, lol

  • @EnvelopingShadowz LOL I almost cried laughing

  • You're a dumbass, that's the whole point of the film. The stubborness of some Jews, combined with the lieniency and desire for change of others is what makes this film interesting to watch.

Yes, we all know that Tevya is a little tenacious when it comes to his traditions(eventhough it is no biblical reference) but, it's no reason to call the story idiotic or stupid.

  • @elixirguitarist a late reaction, I know, but I just thought, reading your comment, that yes, we are stubborn, but that has to do with surviving, seeking solutions to overcome every difficultiy, all that comes on our path and still stay true to the feeling being jewish. ( and that has nothing to do with religion, I am not even religious) but with the feeling being part of the jewish people.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. Lovely lovely lovely.

  • well actually we discussed this during our rehearsal and at this time, tradition definitely play a BIG role in Anatevka and as far as i know, whatever religion the husband is, the wife would be too..and in this case she would be a russian-orthodox. so as much as tevye hates to do it, he has to disown her from the family. he already dealt through losing 2 daughters untraditionally, and the 3rd is just pushing it...so tragic =\

  • i am going to be trying out for fiddler on the roof soon, but i am not sure if i should try out for hodel or chava. what would you say would be the ages of the two? because i dont know if i am old enough to play hodel or too old to play chava. thanks.

  • Hmm... I guess it depends on who you would prefer to play. All of the 3 older girls are fairly close in age: when I did it I was Hodel, but slightly older than Tzeitel and that still worked. I'd go for which one you feel you would like to play most :)

  • hm. sounds good to me. i think i would like to play hodel, her character is fun. thanks.

  • @moonnugget Yeah go for any... we're doing this at school and the youngest kid we have is playing Yente, the matchmaker, and the secondest daughter we have is taller then our tevye...

  • Lovely vid, really. Could you send me a download of this movie?

  • good film i love i like me

  • For me it's his eyes at the end.

  • OMG It's always that part at 1:58 that I can't hold it in anymore...

  • once you start watching the clip you cant notice any ticking

  • Thanks, I know it's quite annoying :)

  • Infact ,all the songs in fiddler on the Roof are Brillant ,I will wear the film out ive watched it so much. THE ACTING IS SO GOOD TOO.

  • This song sends a tingle down my spine ITS SO SO LOVELY

  • I agree :)

  • TY for posting. This scene has always torn my heart out. Loyalty to his God, or to his daughter?

  • No problem.

I mean, what would you choose if put in that position? For me, I would choose Chava: I just can't part with anyone I love.. even the people I love to hate!! :) But that's just my opinion..

    Thanks for commenting :)

  • one of my very favorite scenes! thanks for posting

  • You said that a month ago too, dear, but thanks again anyway!! ^^

It is STILL one of my fav scenes too :D

  • whoops! forgot i had already commented this video lol!

  • Haha :) No problem - I'm pleased you watched it again! xD

  • Beautiful ballet scene.

  • Isn't it just! ;) I love it too :)

  • I always cry when I watch it.

  • Me too :)

  • lovely song! one of my favorites from this musical. Thanks for posting!

  • No problem :D

  • I love it too! I'm playing Chava in this production this summer. She doesn't really have her own song, but she is really fun to play. I love the dance sequence! It's so pretty to watch!

  • Ooh! Good luck being Chava!! I'm sure you'll be awesome :P

Ooh, the dance sequence is lovely.. actually just this song as a whole :)

    Good luck again! :)

  • thanks :)

she's my favourite character in the film, and my favourite story line.

I'm really excited to do this play in the Fall!

  • No probemo ;)

I hope you have fun doing FotR :)

  • I looove the film. I'm really happy my teacher chose this play for next year. I'm thinkin of trying out for the role of Chava. I'm not an extremely strong singer though, does anyone know if in the stage play Chava has more songs than just matchmaker and I guess tradition?

  • I love the film too :DD Chava's only solo is in 'Matchmaker'. She would be singing in chorus numbers like 'Tradition'; 'Sabbath Prayer' (maybe - our Chava and the other sisters were just ah-ing :D ); 'Sunrise, Sunset' & maybe 'Anatevkah' depending on what the director wants to do :) You should go for Chava :D I'm sure you'd do well :P

  • we are doing fiddler on the roof for or high school musical next year. Any advice on how to prepare or anything?

  • Oh, I hope you get to do Fiddler!! ^^ Well, I would look up the stoyline if you don't know it too well on wikipedia or elsewhere and look up a few of the songs here on youtube to see what you think :)

Whatever happens, to be honest, I think you should just enjoy it :D I'm sure you'll have loads of fun :)

  • how do you live with a clock that loud?! it would drive me mental(er..)

  • I know *sigh* A lot of people say that, but it really doesn't bother me - you should hear it when it chimes (the wrong hour I might add! It's one of those old fashioned mantel piece clocks that never gets anything right but is loveable)

    Mental(er) lol! (Snap!) :D

  • sentimental over obnoxious time-pieces, a fiddler fan and appreciative of lame gags.. you're kewl ^_^

  • Damn right!!

    Oh, why, thanks xD

  • I used to have a REALLY loud alarm clock that went off every 15 minutes like REALLY loud! It drove me MAD! (I would say (er) but then i would feel like i was intruding on a joke :S) So I through it against the wall and am now living without a clock in my room...*ahem*...

  • makes me weep like a baby, clock or no clock!

  • Aww, bless you :) (It makes me cry too! ^^)

  • i did it to our teacher said its a shame that they cut it out i cried when i first watched it

  • my school cut this scene out when we did fiddler. i wish we had kept it in though. its one of my favorites.

  • Oh no! Mine too :) It's so powerful... and it makes me cry (which few things can do!) :D

  • I meant that it was one of my favs, btw, not that we cut it out! (just if you wanted to know - that comment was sorta ambiguous!)

  • would be better if you had stopped that stupid clock while you filmed it

  • I know

    :s

    Sorry :)

  • awesome song - i did this play at my school and i cant read music so 4 ths song i thought it was an A E G A riff - but it ws rlly F C G A but cuz i playd it wrong (and sounded cool) it got me into this song

  • Haha :DD Well I'm glad you got the song even if the riff was wrong (I like it when things go wrong but it sounds cool anyway! xD)

Cool :) We did this show in February at my school and it was awesomely fun :P How did yours go??

Thanks for the comment!! I'm glad you like the song :)

  • mine went great - ya know tevye? - when he rolled the cart in the beginning he fell of the pit and it fell on the guy in front of me on one show - but other than that it went well

  • OMG no way!! :o I bet that was a total nightmare; pretty much like my first night when, for me, my mic fell off during 'Matchmaker'. I needed to get it back on for the last few lines of the song cause I needed to use my arms :s It was difficult, but I somehow managed to get it back on without a lot of fuss. And that is slightly less noticeable than the cart! xD

Well, I'm glad it went well overall; I think ours was pretty good too :)

  • definitely the best song in the movie. i teared up at this section.

  • I know :) It's way too good for our own good! xD

    Thanks for commenting :)

  • more tears...haven't seen this for 22 years, when I was Golde in high school...

  • Aw, no!! :P I hope they're happy tears.. you were crying in the other one too!!

Our production ended last month and that seems like forever ago! I was Hodel :)

  • I cry *every* time I hear this song. Thanks so much for putting it up here.

  • Aww, snap :)

No problem!! :D I'm glad you love it as much as me! :)

  • this is probably my favorite scene in the whole movie. it's so sad and i love how the sisters get taken away by their loved ones in the song. i love the way they portrayed each daughter leaving the family.

  • Same :)

Our production finished last night and I was bawling offstage whilst this song was on cause I think its one of the most powerful in the show. We just had a piano in the background instead of the rest of the pit band playing and that made it sound even more adorable and sadder. And we used a projection of Chava and the little sisters playing in the woods :*)

Thanks so much for your comment! :)

  • we're having a production too!! i know i will be crying when that part comes on. oooh i like how you just had the piano. that was a good move XD. makes it stronger i think. was the projection something you guys just filmed for the production?

  • Ooh jealous :) So sad mine is over.. I hope you enjoy yours :) I'm gonna try and get some of the film from our production on here *fingers crossed*

Aw, the piano was awesome :P And it sounded so so good; awesomely overwhelming. It was the most amazing atmosphere ever because the audience weren't saying a word.. there wasn't even a cough!! ^^

Yeah, they made the projection just for the production but it was soo good..

Good luck with your production of FotR!! x

  • i'm sure that i'm going to cry once the production's over. D: XD

the piano sounds really exciting and awesome! it must have been breathtaking...

thank you so much! haha this has been fun!

  • Aww, thank you. I love talking to people about Fiddler! (everyone I know is bored now! lol) :PP

  • actually i think the ticking clock shows how time goes by, ticking away.

  • ooh! :) Well, it's nice to know that my annoying ticking clock has it's uses!!

Thanks, that was a really nice thing to say :D

    x

  • This is well good :). I love your vids aswell.

    James xx

  • I'm glad (as always!) :) In our production I think we are going to have lots of Chavas everywhere which Tevye (the Papa) is going to be looking at, remembering what Chava was once like and singing to..
