they call him the monster because that was the name given to him by his old team, it acts as a tribute to that team, and also because he is a large goally who blocks a lot of shots so its a fitting name
The "monster"-expression does not come from his height, it comes from the playoffs 2009 in Sweden, where Jonas made like 9-10 unbelievable saves in a row and the coach just said -"he's like a monster back there" and it kind of continued from there - the press snapped it up and used it in the papers.
Jonas had like 5 games out of 13 games with no goals behind him in the playoffs 2009...
He's big in size, but comes up huge when the pressure is on if you look at his career outside the NHL. Especially when it comes down to the playoffs. Look at his statistics, and you'll understand that he deserves the moniker.
If he can bring consistency to his game in the pressure cooker that is Toronto and not wilt, Toronto has gotten themselves a gem of a goaltender.
That said, caution should be used, seeing Toronto does not want another Pogge.
Fans need to realise that goaltenders nowadays need time to develop. Ask Fleury, Carey Price, or any other franchise goaltender who have been thrown under the bus, only to struggle before they could find their game.
I think Gustavsson should play the season behind Toskala and split games, should he really shine. Go through some ups and downs with the guy, before making such an immense decision, and putting it on the shoulders of a rookie. Thats unfair.
I don't think he has any pressure on him. I mean sure it looks like it because its The Toronto Maple Leafs. He's been under enough pressure playing Europe so I think he's ready for the job. If anything, I would see it as unfair for Tosk to be no.2
He's a rookie and just like Carey Price, is seen as the holy messiah and savior of his team due to his stellar play at every other level that he's played in.
There will be an adjustment period to the completely different ice dimensions, angles where most shots come from, and quality of the players in the NHL. Yes he is under alot of pressure. Making Toskala number two, would be foolish, as it would mean trading him. Make them a tandem split the duties if Gustavsson earns it.
I think we can both agree that Gustavsson will be a monster in net for Toronto for years to come.
Also, a little tidbit. As of recently, the most successful goaltenders for Toronto, have all had nicknames: "The eagle", "Cujo", and "The cat". Now, insert "The monster".
The great thing is we have a tough goalie some good scorers and a bunch of hired goons tht will knock you out if you cross the blue line now all we need is 1 good goal scorer (which was supposed to be tavares:( but overral good team
we only need one because if we were tenth overall in scoring last year when our players were picking up their teeth throughout the game...and now that we have players like komisarek, exelby, orr and the other one whos name i cant spell lol backing them up., they can perform better
DAMN GUS is so stall X) and so cute <3

Brian burke stayed true to his word building this team from "The Net & Out"
He's done the net,
Done the defence, now we need maybe even just ONE top 6 forward, we had no problem scoring goals last season, just had problem keeping the puck
