  • Just discovered Daniel Johnston. Extremely confronting and beautiful music. Inspired me to make a cover of "Story Of An Artist" :) /watch?v=uow1a554Li8&lc

  • this guy remembers me to phoebe from "friends"...

  • I love daniel johnston sooooo much!! I'm so blessed to have met him :)

  • @strungoutbeaner how was it?

  • Where can i find this doc? anyone?

  • Insanity. Who is to say what insanity truly is. We define. We make what we think is... Do you catch me?

Sometimes life makes me very, very happy.

    Rarely.

Daniel Johnson is one of those rare people who make me truly happy. I never knew him. I never met him.

I honestly think the world will never know another artist more passionate or honest.

Say what you will about Daniel Johnson. He will forever exist in my mind.

  • I know that this is really fucking backwards, but Trollin Withdrawal made me like Daniel Johnston and this documentary made me love Daniel Johnston. This is a great documentary about an amazing dude. I wish I could have discovered him way before I did, but I'm glad I eventually found my way around.

  • I can't understand people saying there's no catchy songs here and the voice is bad. Silly love is musically/lyrically such a great song. None of the covers of his songs on Youtube come close to the originals, not even Beck or Wilco. Something deep and haunting going on with DJ that really grabs me, anyway.

  • this so awesome bc zi have been following him 4 years....

  • @donecheapdonerightpc It was me that left this message...i was under my biz name sorry....awesome no doubt...!!!

  • iwll get this dvd i swear to satan

  • whats the name of the first song

  • @wonderbreadman12 spirit world rising

  • daniel johnston went crazy cause he found out he was better than most of society and didn't know wtf was wrong with everybody on this planet. imo

  • It's wierd because he's at once a complete fabrication of his childhood fantasies as well as a completely genuine. He's fake and real, but you can't help but feel like despite the completeness of his devotion something's missing.

  • @MickyG4444 dude, that is a great commentary. Excellent!

  • I believe the song at the start is Devil Town, i wrote a tune inspired by this film just youtube search ksl2ec , would love some feedback on it, good or bad thanks!

  • whats the song at the beginning

  • I met daniel johnston in manchester last thursday. I came over to him and said 'You know, your song Going Down is one of my favourite songs I've ever heard'. He was sitting down, and shaking. He sort of didn't respond at first, then looked up, and said 'Hey yeah, I remember that one,' and reached out his hand to shake mine. Such a nice guy.

  • @digitalsustain so sweet (:

  • Just saw daniel last night! Got a pic with him and 2 signatures :D

  • I was having a nervous break down when I recorded it LMAOOOOO fucking so funny yet amazing.

  • He is Syd Barrett without the talent. I tried to listen, i tried to make it great, but its not there. I can honestly say i didn't find any song even somewhat catchy. Thats just my opinion though

  • song at 1:38?

  • @Osthropek Story Of An Artist

  • All the way through the film I couldn't help noticing he was a terrible singer.

  • @GodwinCarpenter And you think Bob Dylan is a good singer? They are poets man.

  • can someone post a list of songs of from this trailer?

  • I do not see the attraction. Crazy white folk. But he is cute.

  • So is he bipolar or autistic?

  • @pokabeb I think he's bipolar because I suffer from some of the same delusions and deppression as he does but he has it so much worse than me. Poor guy.

  • @pokabeb Bipolar.

  • Just the trailer alone never fails to give me goosebumps and teary eyes! I love this flick. If u havent seen it, DO IT!

  • please what is the title of the last song of this trailer?

  • @giupezio The story of an artist by Daniel Johnston :)

  • what is the name of the song that plays at the end of the trailer?

  • @4TheTabsInUrEyes Story of an artist. you could have easily looked this up lol.

  • Inspirational man with many gifts from God:) Great artistry!

  • daniel johnston would have been one of the most famouse singers in the world if it wasnt for all the bullshit that is played today... if the illuminati wasnt making us so dumb with all the crap they make us listern to, maybe daniels songs could save us all from hate. john lennon tried, but they killed him, makes you think doesnt it? if daniels music was as big as the beatles, he would be dead allready... plus there arnt enough smart people in the world to appreciate his music. just pure hearts

  • I've had my experience with The Devil and know Satan is real and realize that it is not the Devil that scares me but God himself. God is a judge that will judge all mankind. Everything we do in this life is being recorded in Heaven and God can use it against you. You either belong to God or you belong to The Devil. There is a Heaven and there is a Hell and unfortunately most people will go to Hell because of their sins.

  • its still at 666 likes!!!:S

  • what a load of hipster crap

  • @LeadLead What a load of bullshit...

  • @evermetal2 exactly!

  • @LeadLead I am glad you agree that your comment was nothing but bullshit...you are getting smarter...

  • @evermetal2 You know you mad, you mad, you got it, huh. Oh yeah you mad, you mad, you got it, huh.

*sung to the tune of Michael Jackson's 'Bad'*

  • @LeadLead Die by my hand, I know I'm fuckin' mad, I'll kill you if I can.

*sung to the tune of Metallica's Creeping Death!*

  • @LeadLead Oh, btw, someone else has done some blocking, not me. So guess who's the pussy...

  • @LeadLead And one more thing: You must be really proud for blocking me, because it is VERY difficult to block someone from your account, yeah, I am amazed at how you did it! You must be very clever, with just one push of a button, you blocked me. WOW! LOL!!

  • @LeadLead I was fucking your mother the other day, and she confessed some things about you. That you wet your bed, you shit your pants, you have a 3cm dick, you can't get a hard-on and that you like men. Are all of them true? Pfff! Mothers, give them one really good fuck and they spit out everything! Except for my magic "potion", she swallows it all!

  • @evermetal2 dude what does shagging someone's mother have to do with the topic of daniel johnston?

  • his music reminds me of times when i used to chill with my best friend and his dad. we would sit on on their back porch, instruments in hand, and improvise. Some nights one of us would just have it going... coming up with magic on the spot. This essentially is what Daniel Johnston is to me- music straight from the unfiltered soul.

  • I get real spooked when I think of this guy with life and death and the afterlife and so on and so on....it's just so close to who I am it's frightening.

    Jbirdy

  • why is everyone praising this guy i seriously see nothing "genius" about his voice or his songs..wth is wrong with all of you.

  • @ForzaAquila WTF you saying man ????????????? get out of here and go listen to Justin Biber or whatever his name be

  • @otavio2 are you done being an idiot? stop repeating what everyone else says trying to be hip and all that shit, i don't listen to beiber in fact i've never heard his voice. i listen to rock and oldies. this tune is good but i won't really ever call this "spectacular" or awesome or genius because yes this is good, his tunes are good, but his voice? i'm sorry but that's mediocre. and i defy you to prove me wrong.

  • @ForzaAquila music is not about the song or about the voice .... music is feeling boy, is all about what the music passed to you .... i think that's what makes DJ so special that he dont give a shit about what they say about his songs or about his voice ... he plays with his heart , so dont listen with the ear listen with your heart

  • @ForzaAquila who are you to decide what is good or not? everyone likes different stuff you know.

  • In Go he's basically telling David to be with Kathy in song so great Dan can't get better then that wish you were still able to play but so glad your preforming at least we have that...

  • Thanks to itunes i can download this mans masterpieces!!!

  • Songs in the trailer:

    Spirit World Rising,

    Walking The Cow,

    The Story of An Artist

  • when you goes "yay!" you just wanna say to him "YAY DANIEL! THE PEOPLE FUCKING LOVE YOU! YAAA!"

  • **SPOILER** Psychologically abusive parenting, LSD, your only love marrying your best friend, and fame don't mix too well. Poor guy. But at least he turned it into really original works of art.

  • @nathanwilefrazier

"Your only love marrying your best friend."

He didn't even know she had a boyfriend. He (the boyfriend) was in mortician school in Florida at the time. Dan tells you this in the film.

  • @nathanwilefrazier -

since when is doing LSD "our problem". I have clinical depression, have had it for almost 15 years-I have never done acid or pot. Yet that is society's problem that others make bad choices?? Honestly this is horsesh%t-it males no sense but to other drug abusers/users.

  • @gravelandgrain100 I've known people who have done it without any apparent negative side effects - so doing LSD does not necessarily cause problems. But this documentary suggests that in DJ's case, heavy LSD use did contribute to his mental deterioration at some point.

  • i heard this movie bashed him...havent seen it yet so i cant assume but...anyone got opinion?

  • @mustbejames1 i loved the movie, its what got me to start listening to him, i dont think it really bashes him, it just presents his life, some of which wasnt very pretty but i dont see it as making him out to be bad or anything

  • Saw the documentary in my psychology course. pretty cool

  • I saw the movie and rigth after i wanted a dramatized movie about daniel, i saw him portraited by michael cera.....I dont know but i think a movie like that could be oscar worthy if done rigth , also it would be nice as Daniel could really use the money and his disease and his story could be put in the spotligth with a movie like that.

  • whats the first song called??? i cant find it!?

  • @stratbrad4 Spirit World Rising. It's from his 1990 live album.

  • satin followers dont be a victim to the convincing music cuz guess who the creator of music is

  • Comment removed

  • I just watched the movie and it was pretty great. On a related note, whoever made this trailer is amazing at what they do. This trailer captures the film brilliantly.

  • This is the first I've ever heard of this singer/songwriter, and I mean EVER???!?

I dunno, amazing stuff, instantly hooked.. I see a little Bob Dylan in him, but more unusual, quirky and downright bizarre melodies, cool as hell!

Damn where the fuck have I been, I missed all this brilliance...

Anyone know if DJ is still alive?

I want to see him live ASAP!

And here I thought I knew every eclectic, fringe-artist on the planet, but yet I somehow missed Daniel Johnston??

    It's not fucking possible?!!

  • @GayWorldOrder

    yeah, he's still alive.

  • Comment removed

  • How did this not even make the SHORTLIST for best documentary at the Academy Awards??? How?? I want answers. It should have frickin' won.

  • what is the name of the song playing in the beginning of this preview, "in the sky, the number 7"???

  • @throughthespidersweb Spirit World Rising, from his album 1990.

  • I feel so hiiggghh! i feel so high!!!!

  • Amazing...

  • very interesting documentary about a very artisitic person

  • Daniel Johnston is absolutely amazing. He deserves so much more respect than he gets. I have to see this movie! By the way, at 1:12, Daniel kind of looks like Steve Buscemi. Haha.

  • whats the song at the end?

  • @richyvandegrift Story of an artist

  • Thank you Iphsit !!

  • What's the song at the beginning? Anyone know?

  • @DaPopeee It's "Spirit World Rising" off of the "1990" album.

  • What's the song at the beginning? Anyone know?

  • I honestly believe he is the best songwriter ever. He's so honest. No one has ever had the balls to write a song as honest as Danny's songs. He's a true legend and one of the most beautiful and intelligently creative people ever. True legend.

  • One of the best movies of the decade for sure, so well done and such a compelling life.

  • Great film about a great artist.

  • I had to watch this for a psych class, and I was weirded out the entire time haha.

  • "I believe in God and I certainly believe in the Devil, he knows my name" - Daniel Johnston

  • Daniel Johnston is the key to understanding alternative rock and really a huge part of our culture for the past 30 years.

  • man, I'd love to meet him.

  • His obsession with the devil and cartoon heroes kinda reminds Brian Wilson's state of mind. In the unreleased Beach Boys' album Smile there are many references to god, heroes, villains and childish themes. Not comparing them musically though

  • @luizcadu i was going to dislike until you added that disclaimer at the end. haha sorry, just wanted to thank you for putting that at the end.

  • can someone please explain why this man is loved so much? I have been obsessed with him for the past couple years and I listen to his music all the time trying to get it. Please people, I am a fan of a lot of music and I really want to get it.

I'll love whoever can give me their honest opinion on why this man is so great.

  • @pills2103 Its cause he is crazy to put it simply. We are all fascinated with the mind of an individual who is no longer connected to society. Its the kind of freedom that people dream about but also pray that it doesn't happen to them. It's this dementia that gives him this ability to observe things so differently. On top of that he is a great artist, but his unique perspective that makes him stand out. His unbiased mind and view makes us want to connect with his genius.

  • @TheVladmoney ... So right, yet so wrong.

  • @TheVladmoney

    That was beautifully put.

There is something that ticks within most people that keeps them mentally 'in line' with society and conventionality. It makes them scared and hesitant to truly break free. It's human nature to conform. But like all rules, there are exceptions. Daniel Johnston is an exception.

  • stream 4 free - Go Movie World . com

  • BINGO!!!

  • I just watched this documentary. I'm not sure if this man was a genius or a fluke. Regardless of his weirdo bi-polar infused talent, its hard for me to get over how selfish and obsessed with fame he was to the point of douchebagery. He tormented his family and was a violent person. Its obvious he still loves McDs cheesburgers as he has morphed into a fat slob. There is nothing more to celebrate here. Worship Roky Erickson instead.

  • @houndsnyc yes that is what bipolar disorder does to you and who cares if he's overweight really........

  • @houndsnyc

You are a fucking asshole. Douchebaggery? Selfish and obsessed? Have you seen American Idol? This guy actually TRIED and did something. He didn't just rely on FOX TV to get him what he wanted. He went out and in spite of everything achieved a modicum of success. Fat slob? Why don't you take Lithium for 10 years and then come talk to me. You'll be fat as hell too. Have you seen Roky? He's a fat fuck too.

  • @houndsnyc wow, you sound like a really understanding human being. I guess you have it all figured out!!!CAn you give me advice? I really want to hear your opinion!!!!!Please please please !!!!!!I guess wanting to get recognition and having dreams is "not cool" these days!!

  • i think that we are the crazy people here, for not seeing, feeling or accepting the world they he does, he is a genius in his own way and everybody with something inside can feel how he express all his inocence in the most passioned way

  • jus ordered this movie cant wait to watch it

  • super good

  • I cry tears of joy every time I watch this film

  • Does anyone knows the name of the song at the 0:31 sec. ??

  • @sacul751 walking the cow

  • @sacul751 Walking the cow

  • just the trailer almost brought me to tears

  • livin livin livn livn life

  • He's sweet. Really.

  • man, i remember when i first saw this documentary...it was amazing, a very personal account of johnston's life. i was in tears by the end of it.

  • A Must See Film!!!

  • @TheOtherVenkman your mom is horrible..in bed

  • I need the best. Why didn't ryanb2990 capitalize ANY of the words in the title ?

  • @amonamarthavenger sometimes, its best to forget about capitals.

  • Let's face it, there is a certain demographic which has a predilection for this avant-garde kind of thing. What I find ever more astonishing than this guy's label as a "genius," is the fact that he as a cult following. Beethoven was a musical genius, so let's not let our perception of reality get distorted here. I see life as nothing more than a Darwinian battleground, and I can also see that people are easily controlled and manipulated when they feel the need to belong to certain groups.

  • it's not about belonging to a group, if people like his music then they just like it. everyone has their own tastes

  • Exactly, perception of reality. Everyone's perception is different. You can only speak for yourself.

  • great movie, great artist..

  • very very cool indeed

  • is this the film where that dude doesn't want to sign to the label cause the same label put out metallica ( a devils band) ?

  • the last line in this trailer was great... i finally get it (him).

  • jep. that's the one...

  • excellent film

  • srsly one of the best musical documentaries i've seen. you go insane with him. i cant believe he is so unknown today. I honestly think someone like him should have been recognized as a lyrical genious, someone that can bring forth such depth in such simple statements and metaphors, no one has topped it.

  • @iwrotealife2 he's pretty well known among people who know about music.

  • @wills

the people who go that extra step into weirdness beyond the easily accessible music that makes its way toward you due to well funded marketing?, and as such is unavoidable and popular...

daniel johnston, the rain man of music? the forrest gump of alternative music?(of course he wasn't that dumb... i just hope he doesn't get all this extra attention due to his "credibility" coming from his mental problems, like a hip hop guy gets cred for his music after a fight or crime

  • @iwrotealife2 I love Daniel Johnston and this is one of my favorite documentaries, so don't rip on me for this, but it's obvious why hes not famous. People focus too much on quality of voice and lets be completely honest, he doesn't have the greatest voice at least in the accepted definition of "a good voice"

  • @iwrotealife2 I agree with you, the problem is most people don't look for music so to speak, they just listen to what the mainstream media play. First time I heard of him was in the movie kids, we all know the infamous skateboard scene lol. every since then I've learnt if you want good music, don't rely on mainstream media go out and look for it

  • such a great movie, everybody needs to see it

  • what is the song at the beginning?

  • @knoxrox167

the spirit world rising. wonderful song.

  • I'm currently watching this with a class of mine, and I have to say his lyrics are pretty fine, I wouldn't go to his concerts on a constant basis though.

  • lol wtf thats my name too

  • I meant to type drawings not songs on the comment below, lol.

  • Daniel Johnston is such a cool person.

    I've met him.

My mom and my two cousins used to sit in the basement with him while he played the piano and wrote songs, We actually have some of his original songs.

My cousin Laura is the infamous "Cigarette Butt Girl". He used to gather her cigarette butts up all day and give them to her.

  • Ive got the discography man he wrote alot of songs..better than Patric Fritzgerald

  • Sounds a lot like the Rocky Erickson story

  • i agree

  • i'm not proclaiming he is a genius or anything. he has talent, he simply isn't refined which is his appeal. i like his stuff because it's just so simple to listen to.

people like him and his music for different reasons, why do you care? should i be buying your favourite band's albums with my money? it's my money, i can do what i want with it.

  • Yep.....stupid ass hipsters like the over 150 artists which have been covered his music, like Tom Waits, Beck (multiple songs), Half Japanese, & Pearl Jam just off the top of my head...yeah Im sure they all felt it was "hip" to record songs of a virtual unknown artist...I'm sure they just did that to ride his coat tails....struggling artists as they all R! LOL! Is your taste in music REALLY that bad, or r u just too closed minded to try to understand something not recorded in a million $ studio?

  • two words that say how much better obscure artists are to your "million $ studio"music ,,,,,,,LADY GAGA,,,, i rest my case, hipsters are annoying yes,but the music is so much better than lady gaga/jayZ crap ,,,, now go listen to your jonas bros soundtrack again and stop criticising eccentric artistic integrity

  • exactly! Although I will admit...if you turn down the volume on her music videos...then the videos themselves are quite creative! LOL!!!!

PS did U mean to reply to me...or did you misunderstand my first sentence...I was repling to someone, and I was being sarcastic by calling those artists "Hipsters". I dont see the comment I was replying to...Maybe the poster removed it. If MINE is being misunderstood without seeing the one Im replying to I might take mine down as well.

  • no I got it, I think takes a person who can appreciate eccentricity to pay any attention to daniel or anybody who covers his songs, btw there is a clip of tom waits on a show called fernwood tonight that is really good on youtube its kinda a parody of the tonight show very funny

  • plz no mention of LG thankyous

  • The thing about johnston's music is that it requires a bit of patience. Many of his songs start off somewhat noisy and atonal at first. But what happens is that what originally seems like random noise waves quickly come together to form a glorious whole.

  • True, but it has been a long time i haven't saw such a dumb ass, so its even funny (but scary in the same time)

  • Everyone is lost without the love of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is real and died on the cross for the sins of the world 2000 years ago. He told us not to be afraid, but to come to Him. He loves everyone so much, He pursues us constantly. I pray you will listen to His heart, ask for forgiveness and ask Him into your hearts and remain in His love. Only this action will save your soul from eternal destruction. The Devil is sadly very real and He is jealous of the Lord and in hatred of you.

  • God is much much complex than you think.

  • so it is with every abstraction of the mind

  • Jesus says that the heart is what needs to see. If you don't know about Jesus, then you should learn. Please hear what the Lord has to say. In Noah's time, no one listened and everyone perished, except for 8 people. Jesus says it will be the same thing when He returns. Do not be lead by the pride of the world. Turn to Jesus Christ.

  • im really sorry but i do not believe in your god or in your so called jesus, besides if u would kno about u r so called jesus, u would know the first writings ever found of him, rejected by the church cuz he was actually more of a boudha, preachin for everyone to find is own light without any stupid church rules, and giving women's the rights they should have had from the begining of times. anyway, i hate dogma's, morality is part of human soul with or without any believes

  • Allezcendre...Jesus never wrote anything. the Gospels are documented manuscripts that exist today and were written 30-70 AD. Also, Flavius Josephus (c. 37c. 100), a Jew and Roman citizen who worked under the patronage of the Flavians, wrote the Antiquities of the Jews in 93 AD. In these works, Jesus is mentioned twice. The one directly concerning Jesus has come to be known as the Testimonium Flavianum. Jesus appeared to women first before men during a time when women were treated like cattle.

  • true but writings of people who knew him at the time wrote the first "sacred" writings 50years after his death or so, however, your cult means nothing more than a sect to me like any other religions, i dont mind peope believin in it if life gets easier for them by doin so but i mind being shout with propaganda, so lets just talk about daniel and music, and if u want to talk about a god or a jesus then go to church, allright?
