So what's with the plane at 1:11? He looks to be coming in over the stern with his gear down, but he's nowhere near the deck. Did he get a wave-off or something? Must have been some well-appreciated break of routine for the guys to have an "exotic" plane like the Rafale on-deck for a day, huh? I wonder how many guys from down below came up just to check 'em out?
yet another cross decking on her majesty USS truman, it seems that iran kicking ass party coming soon, the purpose would be to operate a french air arm sqd on the USS truman, since Yorktown it seems both navies are getting closer, even down to iraq pussies blah blah, time will tell if double views was right or not, i think he was, anyway i miss those tomcats on US carriers decks so much, exeptional aircraft made by grumman , duhhh...
@cdwordsworth26 I'll hold off on judging which is better, but the Rafale and Typhoon only look similar in layout...clipped wing canard-delta's. The Rafale is a sleeker and smaller-looking design, without that boxy intake hanging underneath (I think those chin/side-hybrid intakes are the most distinctive, and best-looking part of the Rafale). The more aft-mounted canards of the Rafale give a triangular planform, and the Typhoon's look like whiskers! Of course, looks are secondary to performance.
The design of the Rafale is simply beautiful... damned, I could almost picture one of those TV spots for perfume-like products with a sensual french lady over the plane saying "Dassault... Rafale, tres irresistible", eh, really, the Designer's brand name (Yeh i know its named after Marcel Dassault) sounds like a fashion designer's brands!
I like the lines of the Rafale, but the dang refueling probe screws up the look, though I understand a fixed probe is less troublesome than a retractable system.
God those Rafels are freaking beautifull. Don't get me wrong I love the F22 and the F35 but those are nimbble little planes, and I think they are the best looking planes period.
Great video, enjoyed it immensely. Too bad there are no videos of our Hornets operating from the Charles de Gaulle. Long live the French-American friendship.
French aircraft carrier are far shorter than american ones. I believe a F-18 as already landed on the Charles-de-Gaulle, but the pilot was afraid by the very short length of the french carrier deck. On the opposite, French pilot said that american carriers deck looks like "autoroute" for them (autoroute is the french word for freeway).
what are those things under the rafale are those bombs or fuel tanks? and whats that thing pointing out by the window it looks like a camrea can some one answer this for me?
a symbol of alliance and brotherhood between two navies is to have one another's aircraft long on the other's carrier deck and then take off. The French had their Rafale fighters on American Nimitz class vessles, while the Americans had Hornets and Super Hornets land on the Charles de Gaulle. Both the Nimitz family and the Charles de Gaulle use the same reactor (though a Nimitz uses two because it's twice the size) and the same 75m steam catapults, as well as the same Hawkeye AWACS plane.
Qui, it is a beautiful plane. Don't get me wrong I love our Hornets/SuperHornets, they are deadly planes but the front of that Rafale is sexy!!! I wanna hump it.
Yep, and the only foreigners in the world to have to pleasure to land on this kind of sea's queen, would be nice for the french to buy another CVN, and why not a US made one, rather than a slow gaz propulsed cheap piece of british steel...
You wanna ask the same question about every other US ally. Like what are the british doing in Iraq, what are the german's doing in Afhgnistan, What are the Canadian's doing in Afghanistan..
Dassault Rafale , a French multirole fighter.
A multi-purpose fighter with the features of OWL.

Isn't it dangerous to be standing next to the wires when an aircraft is landing? Suppose a wire snaps!

Can the F/A-18 land on the de Gaulle or are there any issues with weight, landing gear or runway length?

233880003 3 years ago
Fuel tanks. and the thing near the window is for "air refueling"
JaimeBander007 3 years ago
The thing pointing out the window is so the Rafale can connect to a tanker aircraft and refuel in flight.

France will never buy a US made carrier because France build its OWN carriers.
France will have a second carrier in 2011. Maybe in cooperation with the Brits, maybe not.

why shouldnt the french be on a US carrier?
they are the only 3 nations that have CATOBAR carriers, so why not co-operate. might learn somthing
