Lots of fascinating things about the match. There was the fine running rugby from both sides, an easy conversion missed, some errors on the field (but not too many), the passion of the crowd and a brilliant last minute winner. How ironic that is came from John Taylor, given that he would later commentate on England's last gasp World Cup victory in 2003 over Australia.
Mind you, Bill McLaren was the best with the mike......he really paints a beautiful of this game with his words - RIP!
As England fan who was born in 1970, I must say this is one of the best game of rugby I have ever watched. I saw this for the first time on ESPN Classic a year ago, and I was truly enthralled. I did know the result so that did help!
They were world beaters. Later in 1971 the nucleus of this team formed the victorious 1971 Lions team in New Zealand. The outside half Barry John (proclaimed as 'King' John in NZ) the captain John Dawes, Gareth Edwards often lauded as one of the greatest ever Mervyn Davies, JPR Williams, Gerald Davies. Many of this same team were part of the victorious 1974 invincibles who went to S. Africa. At that time, with no world cup, British rugby. based around the Welsh superstars, ruled the world.
Wales and the Springboks only played one game in the 70s, a drawn match. Due of apartheid and the Basil D'Olivera affair sport against South Africa was discouraged. Wales and NZ played once and it's true NZ won but you're completely missing the point I was making. Some of the individuals in the 1971 Welsh team are ackowledged, even in the southern hemisphere, as some of the greatest players of all time.
@CNicol40 True. In the barbarians game v NZ in '73 the Welsh contingent made up most of the barbas/British team. I don't know why we don't play as Great Britain and Ireland more often against those in the southern hemisphere. Whether I am from N.Ireland, England, Wales or Scotland is incidental. I am British, Welsh/British, and I will ALWAYS support Wales, N.Ireland, England, Scotland and also the Republic before any other team, rugby or football. Rule Britannia!!
Its been a melancholy day today ever since I heard the sad news of Bill McLaren passing away, he was so good I could even stand to watch England trying to play.
How ironic that the only other commentator to come anywhere close to Bill's dulcet tones (well apart from Cliff Morgan) was the man who kicked the winning conversion in this game - John Taylor.
Even though the conversion cost "his" side the game, never for a moment do you think he's anything but impartial. The current crop cannot hold a candle to Bill. RIP.
Embarrassing

As a kiwi I can only look at that Welsh team with awe. What legends they were and still are, and what a shame they've never really been replaced.

I don't seem to remember the Welsh ever beating the All Blacks in that time. Or the Springboks.

Quite simply, the finest sporting commentator this country has ever produced. Puts the current pompous, arrogant bunch to shame. A master of his art.
