  • This is amazing, a credit to human ingenuity, yes NASA is in the united states but they employ the best engineers from all over

  • what is the music when the shuttle landed?

  • @likeplaneboy The American National Anthem. "The Star-Spangled Banner"

  • @moogug

Unlike Apollo and Soyuz, This is the only orbiter made that CAN be used over and over again.

And besides if NASA was still using Apollos, How the heck will it be able to dock and make the station without a robotic arm? Before you say something really negative think about what other would say.

  • Its at times like this as a Brit I have to hats off to USA.

  • wow this was such an achievement of human intelligence! we will always miss the space shuttle!

  • this is the first space shuttle ever launched.....the fuel tank is painted white.....the oher fuel caps lost the white paint cause of the weight ....3000 pounds of white paint...lol...

  • Wow, remember watching this live on TV with my Dad (I was 6). In the UK we only had 3 TV channels in those days, and it was watched by almost the whole nation. Was a really exciting event, people were talking about it out on the street afterwards.

    How times have changed....

  • i bet the people were scared out of their minds when they heard the sonic booms. they'r probably thinking wth was that, whats going on!?!

  • Sure miss working for NASA in the day! Now I'll miss hearing the sonic boooms when the shuttle came in over Tampa Bay. Sad day for American space exploration.

  • Amazing! Thank you so much for posting this!! :)

  • The glideslope is steeper today, isn't it? Well.. today isn't true anymore..

  • @Boomshanka2000 I believe so, they were also conservative on this landing because they had miles and miles of open desert. In Florida they have to get it stopped from 220 mph in 3 miles.

  • @Boomshanka2000 the descent rate of a shuttle landing is 3 times that of a commerical airliner.

  • U.S fix your economy and return to space!

  • Now I just saw the launch of the first one too!

  • 1981-2011

Thank you NASA for building, and operating the best tool for space research in the history of man.

  • Nice footage and from vantage points that NASA doesn't seem to take or release anymore.

  • This landing pad now become official

  • What they didnt know is that the shuttle is going 5 times the speed of sound. So hearing the twin sonic booms was something people didnt realize until they got the results on how fast it goes.

  • Backwards hat guy flinched like a bitch. 1:51

  • In retrospect, I think there were a lot of mistakes made in the development of the space shuttle, but I can't help but feel envious of the people who watched that first launch and landing feeling optimism for the space program. I think we're going to see the end of manned spaceflight within my lifetime and it depresses me.

  • @uraniun235 I know what you mean... It is sad to live in an age where we seem to be "going back" everytime. When I was a boy and I heard my grand parents bragging about the "good old times" saying they did this, they did that, I knew they were wrong, later I found they were just missing their youth, but nowdays... I don't have the heart say that to children, because I wouldn't be just wining about missing my youth, I would be telling the truth: "In my days we went to the moon and back..."

  • @uraniun235

I know. My parents were around to see all these great things created. Then I come around just in time to see them disappear, or worse, be destroyed.

  • Question: Why was were rockets changed white color to orange and when?

  • @antdude The big external tank looks orange when it's unpainted. The tank was painted white for the first few launches, but NASA determined that it would save weight and money to leave it unpainted. Weight savings are very valuable for space vehicles.

  • @uraniun235 Ah. I thought it was orange painted over. I wonder why they didn't use orange color originally. ;)

  • @antdude

The color of the tank itself is orange. They painted the tank white. The don't paint the external tank anymore to reduce weight.

  • @egamez1 Heh, I always orange was the paint. :) Why don't think make the tank white originally? ;)

  • Holy shit that's a big runway. And the patriotic music in the background makes me laugh considering what Tea Baggers currently think of the space program.

  • Launched during a recession. I guess the hatred of government hadn't hit yet.

I, for one, was very proud of my country during this first mission.

  • @ThePilotpatrick Break Chute not needed at Edwards Airforce Base. It could roll forever out there and not hit anything.

  • I will never forget the sound of the sonic booms from the shuttles.

  • i will never understand why they ended the shuttle program because everybody knew that there would never be a follow up program and never be a return to the moon or a flight to mars. They should have upgraded the shuttle and keep it in service.

  • People cheered back then because they believed in America. It's really too bad that our current president is a clown and he has a puppet in charge of NASA that don't care about the country

  • @JohnWells1973 as if any republican president would pump 100 billion (todays worth of the sixties space program) into space industry, i thought "less government, less taxes" was the slogan ? cutting the budget?

  • @Esudao ...Budget cutting is all fine with me. However, do not cut something that has helped so many people ...Myself included in the area of medical research ...Do not cut someething that impacts national security. Do not cut something that has helped in allowing technology to evolve as it has. ...You want to replace the shuttle? Fine. replace it ...But there are other government programs that return no investment ehatsoever

  • Foreign Aid would be a good place to start cutting

  • Hearing the thousands of people cheer and yell and the band play just makes me sad. Now when a space shuttle lands there probably isn't a single person there watching, people take these things for granted.

  • @trapical with only two missions left record amount of people are showing up at takeoffs to be able to say they saw the shuttle when they were in service

  • @trapical I think you are wrong on that one.....I watched Discovery land at KSC. It's not open to the public. I had an astronaut invite.....the only way I could get there to see it.

  • @moogug Look at what built the ISS and carried all the components into orbit. The shuttle was the only vehicle ever built with that size of cargo and lifting capacity. Without it there would be no ISS. The Soyuz barely has room for 3 astronauts.

  • @johnschaser i was goin to say the same thing... nasa made the shuttles for human kind... remember that

  • @johnschaser If NASA had spent their money on making the saturns bigger and better instead of on the shuttle, the dominant space news of the 80s would have been men on mars, not the challenger disaster.

  • Comment removed

  • @johnschaser You are correct the only reason they did not retire the shuttle after columbia crash is because the shuttle was the only thing capable of delivering the ISS modules.

  • @moogug They should have pursued the x-15 project instead of cancelling it. We would have still made it into space and accomplished so much of what we accomplished with the shuttle.

  • @moogug Just like the wars we have been in for ten years. But I'd rather put the money towards a space program.

  • @moogug First of all, humans wanted to go to Mars. In order to do that, they needed a space station. In order to build a space station, they needed a "space truck ". so that's how the space shuttle was born and us

PS.The International Space Station was built after that and now they are one step closer for going to Mars but now look what they have done, they made the space shuttle a very popular vehicle and machine to make it very popular for children.

  • @moogug its not a waste of money if your creating history

  • @moogug Well that's a Government project for you, but it wasn't a total waste by any means as john points out.

  • @moogug When you say white elephant, Do you mean your mom?

  • You guys have to watch this while listening to a song called "Where my heart will take me", the theme song for Star Trek: Enterprise.

  • @ThePilotpatrick They didn't always use one. There was even a shuttle without one not too long ago when the other ones had them.

  • I can't believe that their journey is almost over

  • That is fucking sexy

  • You got this from that blacktooth or simplymedia disc didn't you! :)

  • what? they were passing the earth on the HIGH SPEED THING?

  • 1:50 Ha Ha! Those sonic booms surprise ppl in central Florida today. The only thing is they don't know what they are and I have to explaine what it is. Nobody pays atention to when a shulle is landing at KSC.

Some lady at work last year: "OH! What was That???!! A Bomb?"

Me: "No the shuttle is scedualed for landing today it might be that"

  • @Neillil411 Just think these were the first twin sonic booms ever produced by a shuttle! No one had ever heard them before or knew what to expect!

  • I dont think actual rockets with humans have made it to the moon yet or atleast toured space.

  • Comment removed

  • look at that look at that it take that much power to get off the earth right all that fule now in that in mind how the fuck did we get off the moon fuckin 80 or wtv years ago so did we realy go to the moon lmao i dont think so because u need alot of tork to get the fuck out and they didnt even have it whe they were in space all they had was the little shit box lmao

  • @poker360

    80 :D

You don't even remember when the first moon landing was and here you are comparing shuttle to a moon rocket.

First of all the we are still using pretty much the exact same propulsion technology so it's pointless to point out how much fuel the shuttle need etc.

Have you ever even seen the moon rocket?

It's quite large compared to the shuttle + tank and boosters.

I don't know why I'm even trying to convince such an idiot like you.

  • how is it possible to carry the right amount of fuel and oxygen to travel into space? Its like to say im leavin CA to NY on a full tank without stopping at a gas station haha. i wont get that far :)

  • @BeastJuicinn well since theres no air resistance in space it only takes a single burst of thrust to get you moving at a constant speed, and the oxygen is compressed and recycled

  • @poker360 lol idiot

  • @poker360 i don't think u realize that the moon only has 1/6 the gravity of the earth and that the LEM was designed to be extremely light. if you tried to stand a LEM on its own footpads on Earth, the legs would buckle under its own weight.......so yeah......read a science book before u make shitty comments like urs

  • I saw Columbia's first landing, live on TV. I remember it. I was in 1st grade. Right before it touched down, our teacher said "Oh my God, it'll be a miracle if they make it." I remember it like it was a few years ago.

  • Jeg husker desværre ganske tydeligt, da den første rumfærge i 1986, brød i brand.

Jeg var virkelig knust i lang tid, indtil jeg heldigvis fandt ud af, at de havde flere rumfærger, som de ville sende afsted.

  • They should wrap a pair of those new Ares rockets to the shuttle and keep using it!

  • lol to true mate

  • I will miss the shuttle. Tonight was the last night launch ever of a shuttle, but it was scrubbed due to weather. 24 hours to go till the next try. GO SHUTTLE GO!!!

  • i have this thing in firefox it tells me when the next STS launch is and when i saw it was delayed i was like dammit!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • guys seruiosly...is there any need for this violent argueing?you are balls of rage.

  • @Cosmored There's a GALAXY of evidence that shows and proves that you are ding-a-ling!! lol I mean really....so ridiculous.....yeah.....the WHOLE WORLD is in on this absurd hoax!! If it were a hoax it would have be proven decades ago and we would not have the endless evidence that we were there! I have read the hoax theory about what "really" happened when Apollo 11 launched. it's the most ridiculous pile of nonsense I have ever read- funny actually that anyone would believe it!!!

  • @JAnthony37

"If it were a hoax it would have be proven decades ago and we would not have the endless evidence that we were there!"

The press would never report it if someone were to try to come forward. Look at the info in this link.

  • and how can u tell?

  • Look at the Eagles .. God creat them with 2 big Wings. . .2 big taile wings too! Why?God want them to have all that when they carry their foods... .This Shuttle! If do the landing will look likes a Bomb 30,000 lbs drop by a C130. . . .

  • Dmtau was a Fighter Pilot F5E Tiger II in VN war. . . .or if you are not a pilot! You just think a little. . . then you know Shuttle are fake likes F117,B1,B2,Aegies war ships or even Tomahawk. . .or Smart Bombs fake too!

  • Dmtau, you say you were a pilot in the Vietnam War? That war started in 1959 and ended in 1975. According to your channel you are 50 years old which would make your birthyear 1959. So by the time the war was over you were 16. You must have set some kind of military record for youngest combat pilot.

Probably retired as general at age 25.

  • DornanKD.Ask you a question ! Do any on Youtube give you are real of age or name. . even yourself ! How many nicks you may have on Youtube.Dmtau was a Fighter Pilot more than 9 yrs with many, many Air missions support to ground stroops.. bloody battle. .betwin live &death

  • Dmtau must know very well the Jet F5E Tiger II of my. . . Basic one plane must have:

-Body wings with FLAP & Ailerron

    -Tails Wings with ELEVATOR,RUDDER

The Shuttle had only Tails Wings with Elevator,Rudder. . . so What is carry the body of the Shuttle?Obama or Democrats ???Be smart or die!

  • After VN war. .Dmtau still a live . . .Thank Mr God!Dmtau came to US. . .100% support the Good US to fight the nation control us ! Mongols. . . .Shuttle,F117,B1,B2,Aegies war ships.Seawofl Sub. . .all those things Are Fake. . ways our enemy make moneys. . ..You on welfare, foodstamps. .to say that

  • Have a nice day . .Bye guy !

  • yeah shutles are fake but shuttles are real.

    kthxbye.

  • It's fake, I can tell by the pixels.

  • yeah, i would agree.... one pixel looks out of whack with the shadows...

  • Awesome!!!! What was the source of this video? I have seen bits and pieces of it before, and I would like to chase down the original NASA reel...

  • Hmm, if ISS is fake, how come you can actually see it in the sky with a telescope? Oh I know, they paint it on every telescope when they sell it to you. :D

  • You did'nt know that?! It's a conspiracy man! We all know the Aliens did it! lol

  • not to mention not only is the shuttle fake, youtube is fake too.. it doesn't really exist.

  • the ISS is fake. God painted it on the sky. that's why you can see it in every telescope. and when it gets dirty He send angels to wipe it down with windex!(sarcasm definitely intended)

  • @matushorvath I've seen that thing float by occasionally without a telescope. It moves pretty fast, but it's definitely noticeable. I'd hate to think about that thing one day losing orbit and trying to burn up in the atmosphere, because I don't think it will burn up all the way. LoL, kinda scary.

  • @phattieg yeah it does move very fast, it orbits he earth every 90 minutes or so :)

  • @phattieg Me too - I have seen it fly by in the AM hours four times in the last two weeks. :)

  • @matushorvath Let me get this straight? People think the ISS is fake?

I'm very depressed in life because I constantly am reminded how INCREDIBLY stupid people are.

This new bit of information furthers my unfortunate realization of this truth of humanity.

I dont want to live on this planet anymore.

  • Dear Truth666,

You are pretty scary. There's help for nut bags like you out there, go find it. What's up with the 666 bullshit? Do you think you're the fucking devil or some shit? I just happened to pull up this video and really did get a good laugh out of your bullshit. Thanks man! I might check back in a few weeks for anouther laugh.

  • Go fuck yourself dipshit. Shuttle's fake? Really?

What about that Sonic booms? Oh and wait dumbass I've seen the shuttle's land UP CLOSE! I've heard the APU's, not many planes make that sound. Mind Control? Really? Then how about those big explosion sounds that I can hear from TAMPA if the shuttle's coming in. Mind control to? Fucking cunt.

  • *slow clap*

    *realization of irrationality*

    *riotous laughter*

  • HAHAHA, truth666 i gave a thumbs up cause u made me laugh so hard for tonight

    =D

  • @Truth666 Clearly YOU.......are an idiot.

  • Alpha-Numeric!!!! I bet this boosted American morale at the time. Lets see the Soviets try something now..

  • The world over we have no respect for stupid people who abuse the word awesome. Listen to this you dumb american idiots, this is what AWESOME means. I live in England we invented the language which you abuse.

  • Look at that sucker rock back and forth on launch!!

Great to include the sonic booms and crowd cheering.

Had to be one of the greatest test pilot moments in history for Young and Crippen!

  • who makes the sonic booms? :)

  • notice how parachutes wern't used to

    slow the shuttle

  • if im not mistaken the columbia landed at white sand missle range at one time or another, and i no this is because i live within 30 minutes of the range

  • Columbia in 1982... weather at the cape was too bad so they had to settle for NM.

  • I got a little chill at the end there.

I was only a few months old when Columbia made her first voyage. The space shuttles and I are about the same age.

  • 0:48 1:00

vibration and stress in shuttle pilots voice

  • I was in college in 1981 and drove down to see the liftoff. But my fondest memory was cutting class to see the landing on the student union TV two days later.

Everyone turned to stare at us, a dozen geeks who suddenly started clapping and cheering and crying, because Colombia was safely down and we were finally exploring space again.

    Thanks for the memory.

  • Yikes, I meant of course Columbia.

  • It should be noted that the countdown in the first 30 seconds is actually from a 1985 Atlantis launch, STS-61B. Like hearing the NTD countdown each second and then the CDR radioes " Liftoff, Houston!" Shaw was the only CDR that actually radioed a lift-off call.

  • STS-1 was dangerous mission with untested vehicle and procedures. Good thing they made it back with damaged orbiter.

  • Yeah there were over 100 damaged and missing thermal tiles. Today it is a big deal if we find 1.

  • @johnschaser Yea! That's because they were using Post-It-Note adhesive. Ha Ha!

  • nice video. just watched one on columbia's last flight so i figured i should watch the first.
